As much as millennials and Gen Z have been glazing all kinds of '80s trends, there's a disconnect that's hard to ignore. For them, it's simply a curated throwback aesthetic. So, it's time to think about those who actually lived and breathed those trends, rather than just seeing them as a mood board. Because when it comes to the '80s, no one knows them better than Gen X.

Similar to throwback hairstyles only Gen X will remember wearing, there are also a myriad of throwback fashion trends that fall into this same category. Just like those old school hairstyles, like the wolf cut and crimped hair, that people are learning to embrace and appreciate again, fashion trends that once defined the '80s, like colorful leg warmers and huge shoulder pads, are also making a major, modernized comeback.

It's a classic case of "what goes around, comes around," and since the world of fashion has been so nostalgic, it felt like the perfect time to dedicate a post to the tastemakers of the time. That way, millennials and Gen Z will know exactly who to credit the next time they're on the hunt for the perfect jelly shoes or athleisure set.

Jelly shoes have always been a thing

From jelly sandals to jelly mules, jelly shoes have been deemed one of the hottest shoe trends for summer 2026. But for Gen X, this "new" obsession is like a time machine back to their summers in the '80s. These transparent, often neon colored shoes were seen on women of all ages then and were a universal staple. In fact, in a subreddit dedicated to celebrating the 1980s, Redditors deemed jelly shoes their very own version of Crocs. In 2026, brands like Sam Edelman and even Gucci have released their very own updated versions of these retro shoes.

The painter's cap is meeting a modern moment

A painter's cap is also one of the throwback trends that only Gen X will remember wearing. While many Gen Xers seem to regret sporting one of these back in the day, with users on an r/GenX subreddit discussing the specific style and questioning the style choices of their younger selves, brands like Aimé Leon Dore disagree and have deemed them cool enough to make a comeback. The updated version boasts elevated silhouettes with premium materials and sophisticated designs.

Members Only jackets were a total status symbol

Gen Xers instantly know a Members Only jacket when they see one. The brand's jacket became the epitome of exclusivity, and if you were lucky enough to have one, it seemed like it was a free entry pass into the cool crowd. These jackets had a resurgence when '80s fashion trends started making comebacks, but perhaps their most iconic moment was when Joe Keery was spotted on the hit Netflix series, "Stranger Things," wearing his very own. Fans of the show will go out of their way to find the "Steve Harrington jacket," often unaware they're chasing an '80s status symbol.

Shoulder pads are making their way back

Structural shoulder pads are a major fashion marker of the '80s. While modern blazers play with volume, they lack the commitment of the original era, where everything had pads. According to Reddit, some Gen Xers recall a time when you couldn't find anything without them. While you won't spot shoulder pads everywhere on the streets today, bold fashion icons like Victoria Beckham and Lady Gaga have championed the sharp-angled look since the late 2000s, proving the silhouette never went away. With Grazia UK reporting a resurgence in 2026, the trend is officially back.

Layering long-sleeved and short-sleeved tees

Jennifer Aniston, who's famous for still rocking some '90s trends, is just one of the celebs who love layering a long-sleeved tee with a short-sleeved one. This is another Gen X staple that never really went anywhere as it continued into the early aughts, with millennial icons like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen often spotted leaning into the look. In fact, the fashion mogul twins loved the layering look so much that they brought it back in The Row's spring/summer 2025 collection.

Swatch watches are timeless

For Gen X, you either went colorful or went home with any trend, even their wrist candy. And in the '80s, owning a colorful Swatch watch, or a few, was the ultimate flex. If you were lucky enough to have multiple, you had to showcase them in real time. The only way to do that? Wear them all at once. In 2026, Gen X is passing the torch to their kids and opting to gift Swatch watches as the very first watch. How special! It's also proof that the brand has never really gone out of style.

Tracksuits come back every 20 years

Before Paris Hilton made Juicy Couture tracksuits a thing of the 2000s, there was the original '80s tracksuit obsession. And no, these tracksuits didn't come in chic neutrals like lounge sets from Alo and Lululemon; they demanded some serious personality. Think electric blue, leopard print, and anything else that demands attention. The '80s were all about standing out, and a shiny tracksuit was the perfect way to do it in a comfortable way. In 2026, tracksuits look a little different, more subtle and chicer, but there's word that the vibrantly colored Juicy Couture velour tracksuits are trending.

Hypercolor shirts were impractical but fun

Although a single trip through a drying cycle would erase the magic of Hypercolor t-shirts, all the trendy Gen X kids seemed to have owned one. Unfortunately for women, it seems the science was rarely ever flattering, as some complained their Hypercolor T-shirts 'always changed color at the shoulders and boobs,' with some even adding that the underarm area was an issue as well. These color-changing T-shirts may not be as trendy as they were in the '80s, but they're still available, and many seem to buy them for the nostalgia.

Colorful leg warmers are changing shape

In case you didn't know, the '80s had an obsession with aerobics and dance. Movies like "Flashdance" and "Fame" created a whole aesthetic, and colorful leg warmers were just as popular as off-the-shoulder sweaters and spandex. Those often obsessed with vintage fashion love recreating '80s looks, and funky leg warmers with a sweater remain key components of an '80s outfit. Today, brands known for being boho chic, like FP Movement, have brought leg warmers back in the chicest way possible, and it's proof that you can continue to embrace vintage trends while looking modern.

Fanny packs have undergone their own evolution

Right before 2020, fanny packs were the retro accessories that officially became cool again, and for many Gen Xers, it was a long-awaited return. Across multiple Reddit communities dedicated to '80s nostalgia, many had hoped these convenient zip-up pouches would be cool again. Another trend started by the fitness craze of the '80s, the fanny pack was on everyone's waist, even Dwayne Johnson's. Today, the functional bag has evolved, and countless brands like Baggu and The North Face offer all kinds of modernized versions of the original design.
