4 Spring/Summer 2026 Dress Trends Perfect For Older Women

Spring and summer are all about the dresses. And frocks are such a comfortable and flattering way to embrace the heat. For mature women, the criteria for the ideal summer dress emphasizes elegance, comfort, and flattering silhouettes. With that summer heat and humidity, dresses that offer breathability and movement are also necessary.

To get the best take on flattering spring and summer dresses for older women, we spoke with fashion stylist and lifestyle expert Joseph Katz of The Katz Walk, who offers virtual styling sessions on Zoom in Style. Katz explained to Women.com which dress styles are both becoming on mature women and also on trend for 2026. He listed some of the most flattering dress styles to nail summer fashion trends. After all, an expert's help on the subject can reap dividends, and the advice can go beyond even dresses. There are several denim washes that flatter older women perfectly. Plus, there are ideal ways to wear denim for women in their 50s and beyond. Conversely, there are clothing items that women over 40 wear that end up aging them. So many styling tips offer a rich way to embrace fashion at every age. And for this particular moment, our emphasis is on the best dresses.

The draped dress is a gorgeous choice

Draped dresses are a universally appealing choice because soft, flowing fabric creates a flattering silhouette. The romantic folds can strategically hide any trouble zones, while the asymmetrical draping is undeniably elegant. Stylist Joseph Katz told Women.com exclusively why this dress is his first choice for older women. "Summer 2026 is defined by elegant ease — soft, draped tailoring, robe-like silhouettes, and fluid fabrics like silk and satin that move with the body," he explained. "The draped dress is a standout this season, offering a refined sense of shape and subtle drama."

There are specific ways to take advantage of the draping. Katz suggested styling the dress with long scarves — worn either at the neck or the waist to add texture to the look. Offering some specific suggestions, Katz recommended the Pippa dress by Sezane because of its flattering draping around the waist, as well as the Iris knit dress by Reformation that features an asymmetrical neckline and ruching on the sleeve. These looks are sure to hit this summer.

The shirtdress is breezy and cool

Always flattering, the shirtdress is both elegant and easy to style. Joseph Katz explained to Women.com exclusively that the shirtdress fits perfectly with the vibe of the season and always looks fetching on mature women. "The draped dress stands out for its refined shape and subtle drama, while the shirtdress offers a more structured, versatile option that can transition from day to evening," he said. The preppy collar brings polish, while the flow of the dress adds a feminine finish, making it an ideal choice for older women.

Plus, the styling choices for shirtdresses are limitless. "Finish with a great belt, layered jewelry, or relaxed tailoring — the look feels effortless and pulled together," Katz added. For a shorter option, he suggested the Midi Shirtdress from COS if one is inclined to show a little leg. For a more classic shirtdress, the crisp, short-sleeve shirtdress from Reiss creates a flattering silhouette.

The slip dress is versatile and easy to work with

The slip dress is universally flattering and works well for any occasion. Joseph Katz gave Women.com the inside scoop on this timeless frock. "The slip dress is coming back for summer 2026, but in a more refined way," he explained. Katz added that one of the reasons the slip dress has become a mainstay of fashion is because it fits every shape. Whether it has lace embellishments or a simple satin finish, the dress works beautifully on mature women. And best of all, the dress has something for everyone. "You have some personality coming through with animal prints, polka dots, and colors like intense orange, dusty blue, soft pink, and red — so it still feels fresh and current," Katz said.

Giving styling tips for the satin dress, Katz noted that the slip dress pairs beautifully with a light blazer for summer nights. "You can also throw on a light bomber jacket with a great pair of heels to add a bit of edge while keeping it polished," Katz added. To make it more casual, pair the slip dress with a denim jacket. He specifically suggested checking out the silk maxi slip dress by Quince, as well as the dreamy cut slip dress by Everlane. Both dresses are affordable and elegant.

The shift dress is comfortable and chic

The shift dress is an easy, effortless dress that's perfect for your summer wardrobe. Best of all, according to Style at a Certain Age, it's one of the best dresses for women over 50. Shift dresses typically feature a boat neckline and make a great summer dress because they don't cling at the waist. Instead, they offer roomy breathability, making them easy to move around in. The dress skims the body rather than clings to it. But the dress typically cuts off around the knees, so it shows off a little leg. To add to this, the shift dress is trending hard again in recent years.

What makes the shift dress so popular is how workable it is. For a day of running errands around the city, pair it with sandals or sneakers. To dress it up, pair the simple shift dress with heels, statement sunglasses and a bold scarf for a polished look. The enduringly popular shift dress looks charming in every size. This classic staple has earned its place in everyone's closet.
