Nicole Kidman's Full Beauty Evolution In Pictures

Nicole Kidman's look is drastically different from when she hit the acting scene in the '80s. But it's not just Kidman's stunning style transformation that's turned heads. The "Big Little Lies" and "Bewitched" star has also proudly embraced a dramatic beauty evolution. "I love being part of creations, and I think that's the actor part of me. You can teach me how to wear my hair, or change my look, or how to do my makeup, or just expand me; not be set on looking one particularly way," the beauty chameleon told Forbes.

While experimenting with everything from romantic gothic looks to classic red lipstick glamor, she's learned that self-acceptance is the most important part of beauty. When asked by Elle Canada in 2025 how her approach has evolved, she replied, "I think it's become less about trying to copy what I see other people looking like and more about finding what my strengths are." She added, "Instead of trying to tan my skin, I've embraced my pale skin because this is what I was born with and that's okay. I have fair skin; I have freckles." But it took Kidman a few years to find that confidence, and she tried a few different aesthetics before getting there.

1980s: Nicole Kidman hit the scene with tight ringlets and followed makeup trends

In the '80s, Nicole Kidman was a beauty trend follower. Kidman's hair is naturally curly; she wore it in tight ringlets in 1983, which put her on trend considering perms were one of the decade's hottest hair looks. The then-up-and-coming actor also embraced some of the era's trendiest cosmetic aesthetics, like frosty blue eyeshadow with metallic pink lipstick.

By 1989, she'd already evolved. Kidman wore barely there, dewy foundation with brows that were far from overfilled. She'd also ditched fad colors for brown eyeshadow that complemented her piercing blue eyes. The late '80s were also the start of Kidman's love affair with red lipstick. She wore a youthful, pink-leaning red that was perfect considering she was in her early 20s and still had plenty of time to play with deeper, more mature lip colors.

Though she clearly loved experimenting with cosmetics, Kidman would later admit she wasn't always the most confident youngster. "I was very harsh on myself because my looks at that time were not the looks of the generation," she told Forbes. "I was very fair, I was very tall, I wasn't curvy—I was all the things that were not of that era."

1990: The star was all about matte skin and bold lips

Around 1990, Nicole Kidman gave her makeup routine another upgrade. Though she'd opted for hydrated, dewy skin in the '80s, she fully embraced a particular '90s beauty trend: full-coverage, matte foundation with matte red lips. She was snapped wearing heavier makeup, and her increasingly mature look may have been influenced by her life. She married that year and was leaving her early 20s. "I came to the States and did 'Days of Thunder,' married Tom Cruise, and it became a whole different situation. I wasn't this young actress working in the industry. It was all this attention, overwhelming and strange," the Australian actor told the Los Angeles Times.

At one event, Kidman wore heavy black liner above and below her eyes with bright red lipstick and darker lipliner. At another, she pulled back on the eyeliner but opted for fluttery faux lashes to highlight her peepers. Her move toward a classic red lip appeared as a modern take (at the time) on classic Hollywood glamor. Rather than wearing pin curls inspired by classic movie stars, Kidman's hair transformation was in its long, straight era. But she later admitted regretting ditching her natural curls. "I tortured them to death. I always say, 'Don't ruin the ringlets!'" Kidman told Who.

1997: Nicole Kidman leaned into dark lipstick and fluttery faux lashes as she entered her 30s

By 1997, Nicole Kidman had found her footing in Hollywood. Her newfound success, coupled with entering her 30s, may have led to her experimental beauty phase. At the 1997 Oscars, she proved she'd transformed from a young girl to a woman via her dark berry lipstick. "I love it when makeup artists go, 'I just wanna give you a lip that looks like you've just been eating berries.' Isn't that nice?" she'd later tell Allure. Kidman wore more obvious blush, too, while her hair, which was slightly darker, was short and pushed back. The star also wore grey shadow on the outer corner of her eye, despite previously opting for subtle, natural shades. But she was clearly still having fun with changing her makeup looks. At that year's Golden Globes, she'd returned to the classic red lip and wore her hair curly again.

Kidman was often spotted with very subtle nails on the red carpet, too. But when she embraced color, a perfect manicure didn't seem a priority. At the premiere for "The Peacemaker," Kidman's wine-colored short nails were chipped on multiple fingers (which could have been due to being a busy mom of two).

2001: The star wore noticeably heavier makeup after splitting with Tom Cruise

By 2001, we had seen a new side to Nicole Kidman. She and Tom Cruise had gone their separate ways, and Kidman underwent a post-divorce style glow-up. She'd also been exposed to heavier makeup while starring in "Moulin Rouge," and told Allure she did numerous makeup tests for the movie. The actor also told Interview she was tired of playing such serious roles, which may explain why she decided to let loose with cosmetics.

At the "Moulin Rouge" premiere, Kidman's signature red hair appeared more auburn. She paired her moodier, darker locks with romantic, gothic glam-inspired makeup. That included dramatic, spidery lashes, heavy blush, and one of her darkest lipstick shades yet, which fit the aesthetic of her black choker and drop earrings.

The A-lister also leaned into romantic-gothic beauty at "The Others" premiere. Though she sported dewy skin while promoting "Moulin Rouge," her foundation was matte with a rare smoky eye. That included a gray shadow on her lid and under her eye, a shimmery shade in the inner corner, and multiple coats of mascara. The star ditched bronzer, instead wearing a light pink blush with neutral lipstick that proved she wasn't shying away from cool-toned makeup.

2006: Nicole Kidman sported strawberry blond locks with warmer makeup tones

Cool makeup shades had been put away by 2006. Nicole Kidman adopted another new look in her late 30s, dyeing her red locks a strawberry blonde, which added warmth to her complexion. At that year's Oscars, her skin was tanned (she told The Cut she sometimes used faux tan or got a spray tan for roles). Kidman wore warm orange eyeshadow above her socket and natural lipstick shades, which contributed to her warmer-looking complexion. Her eyebrows had been filled in with a light brown product that made them appear much fuller but still soft.

The "A Family Affair" star wore a similar look at the Rome Film Festival, this time with her hair styled into a voluminous bouffant. Kidman had her finger on the pulse with makeup trends, though. She tapped into the year's popular flirty faux lash trend in a subtle way but fully welcomed super glossy lips.

Kidman's age-defying looks inspired plastic surgery rumors, but she denied going under the knife that year. "To be honest, I am completely natural. I have nothing in my face or anything. I wear sunscreen, and I don't smoke. I take care of myself. And I'm very proud to say that," she told Marie Claire. "Anybody can do anything to themselves, their bodies. I have no judgment on it. I personally believe in physical health because of the way I was raised," she added.

2013: The actor showed smooth skin after trying Botox

At a G'Day USA event in January 2013, Nicole Kidman had noticeably smoother skin under her dewy, natural-looking foundation and subtle blush. Her eyebrows appeared more arched and lifted, too, which can be achieved using Botox injections. Kidman admitted to La Repubblica that she'd tried the cosmetic treatment, but wasn't fully happy with the results. "I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again," she said (via TV Guide). The star again made it clear she hadn't had plastic surgery, stating she was "completely natural." Kidman also spoke to TV Movie about cosmetic procedures and admitted to getting a few, but claimed (via People), "But aside from sports and good nutrition, most things don't make a difference."

The Botox had seemingly worn off by that October. Kidman's eyebrows weren't quite as raised at Variety's Power Of Women event, where she opted for a more natural makeup look. She wore slightly glossy, natural pink lips with light brown eyeshadow. But Kidman, who was in her mid-40s, had proven she wasn't a blind trend follower, as she'd clearly learned what makeup techniques and styles complemented her. Contouring was a massive trend, but Kidman didn't buy into it. Instead, she ensured her complexion stayed fair via a light dusting of cool blush with a subtle, frosty pink lipstick, proving she didn't mind going against the beauty grain.

2015: The actor got heavy handed with face powder but embraced color

Nicole Kidman made one of her biggest makeup mistakes in 2015. At the Crystal + Lucy Awards, her white face powder was exposed amid the camera flashes, which made her face look extremely matte with white patches (even with a generous layer of warm blush). Matte finishes were huge that year, which may explain why her makeup artist added a little extra to dull shine. Kidman's likely contained silica, which can show up on camera, though not to the naked eye.

She was also all about matte skin at the AACTA International Awards, but had more fun with color. The star wore coral-pink lipstick and metallic blue eyeliner under her eyes. The change in aesthetic may have been down to her not having a specific go-to glam squad. Makeup artist Kyra Panchenko told Backstage that Kidman works with different makeup artists depending on where she is and the project she's working on.

But while Kidman was clearly a makeup fan, she was also confident without it. She proved that when she posed barefaced for a Pirelli calendar in 2016. "It's a choice and we're allowed to have those choices, and that's a very important conversation for the next generation, for women and little girls," Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter of wearing makeup.

2017: Nicole Kidman channeled ethereal beauty but wasn't done experimenting

Nicole Kidman isn't known for regular updos, but she partially pulled her locks back at the 2017 Golden Globes to show off celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury's handywork. "She looked like an ethereal goddess that had come from another galaxy!" Tilbury said on her eponymous website. "I wanted to create a makeup look that would complement the dress and the beautiful necklace – it needed to be contemporary, magical and cool," Tilbury, who is one of the celebs who rarely share their makeup-free faces, added. She did that by smudging a metallic silver shadow under Kidman's eyes and applying a lighter shade in the inner corner.

But the "Babygirl" star proved she was still very much a beauty chameleon. Kidman wore a bold, maroon lipstick with a light, cool-toned foundation at a "The Beguiled" screening. She leaned into a gothic makeup vibe by avoiding contouring or overly warm, sun-kissed shades. Her smooth, blemish-free skin was still obvious under her foundation, which was likely down to her learning more about skincare. "I used to be like, 'All those creams, who cares?' But definitely as I've gotten older, I've realized those creams are necessary," she told Allure.

2021: The star brought back her natural curls as she harked back to her '90s aesthetic

Nicole Kidman gave a nod to her early '90s looks in 2021 amid the resurgence of '90s beauty trends. Her hairstylist confirmed on Instagram that she wore her natural curls at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opening Gala, where she paired her gorgeous red locks with red lipstick with coral undertones. The icon wore a similar beauty look at that year's "Being The Ricardos" premiere, but with even bolder red lips. Unlike some of her '90s looks that were super matte, her lipstick was glossy, and her skin had a slight healthy shine. Kidman still wasn't taking major risks with her nails, though, opting for a subtle, nude polish.

But while the Oscar winner enjoyed a throwback beauty aesthetic, not everything was the same. Kidman had (wisely) adjusted her skincare routine to cater to her maturing skin. "Over the years I've added more oils and serums to my routine but my constant is a simple cleanser. And I'm always wearing sunscreen," she told Forbes. She also revealed she adapts her skincare routine to where she is.

2023: Bushy brows were a huge part of her look

Though eyebrows hadn't played a major part in Nicole Kidman's beauty looks over the years (particularly in the '90s and '00s), that had changed by 2023. They were noticeably fuller and more textured, particularly at that year's Met Gala, where she'd seemingly pushed them up to create a fluffier shape. The beauty icon's makeup artist kept the rest of her cosmetics simple, including light, dewy skin with neutral lipstick and fluttery lashes, which allowed her strong brows to steal focus.

At a "Special Ops: Lioness" screening, Kidman again proved that she'd come a long way since her sparse, non-filled eyebrow days. That time, her makeup artist heavily filled in her eyebrows (full brows being one of 2023's biggest makeup trends) with a product slightly darker than her hair. Though her thicker brows helped soften her features, it's clear why Kidman has been accused of eyebrow blindness.

2024: She embraced the heavy-blush trend and tried eyeliner tricks

Nicole Kidman wholeheartedly embraced 2024's blush draping trend. At the Met Gala, she appeared to wear lighter blush on the high points and apples of her cheeks, with a slightly darker pink under her cheekbone. That gave the "Practical Magic" actor the appearance of contouring, without the muddiness or bronzing it can sometimes cause. The star, again, had very prominent, well-filled-in brows, and her eyes were defined with full lashes and subtly flicked out eyeliner that elongated her peepers.

Kidman's experimental eyeliner era continued at the premiere of "A Family Affair." Her makeup artist smudged brown shadow or liner on her lower lash line and applied black liquid liner above the eye into the inner corner. She also sported faux lashes, which were more prominent on the ends. But while her eyes were more made up than we're used to, her skin wasn't. "My main trick for Nicole is not to use any heavy products for her base as her skin is so incredible. I want her natural skin glow to show through the makeup," her makeup artist Kate Synnott told Byrdie that year.

2025: She'd learned to love her fair skin and tried a new manicure style

Though Nicole Kidman had long had a fair complexion, she told Harper's Bazaar in 2025 she'd finally learned to fully embrace her natural skin tone. "I used to hate it. It's still not my favorite thing, but I appreciate it because it's very good on film, so I use it that way," she said. She elaborated her journey to self-acceptance to Forbes, "I look at my [younger self] and I go, 'Why didn't you love yourself when you were younger?'"

That newfound self-love was obvious at the Critics' Choice Awards. Kidman was still in her full-brow era and pushed the hairs upward for more texture. She also wore dewy foundation in a fair shade, without too much blush or bronzer. At a Chanel fashion show, she had returned to a more matte finish. Furthermore, she made a rare, bold statement with her nails. The Emmy winner had mostly worn short manicures in understated shades over the years, but she showed off much longer, almond-shaped talons. Her new penchant for fun manis was also evident at the Cannes Film Festival, where Kidman took a risk by wearing a dark shade in summer. Her nail artist, Amu Streets, described the unexpected aesthetic as "Rouge Noir" on Instagram.

2026: Nicole Kidman's skin mirrored her second post-divorce glow up

By 2026, Nicole Kidman had split from her second husband, Keith Urban. And her second post-divorce glow-up was demonstrated by enviable skin. She sported a dewy complexion at the "Scarpetta" premiere but leaned into heavier makeup. Her foundation appeared full coverage, and her eyes were defined with brown eyeshadow and dark lashes. She also proved why orange blush should be in your makeup routine, as it warmed her complexion.

Kidman's makeup also appeared heavier at the Oscars. She dialed up the blush (this time in a pinker shade) but avoided looking overdone by adding neutral lipstick and subtle faux lashes. The star may have been tapping into 2026's more-is-more beauty trend, as the clean girl aesthetic (aka understated, natural looks) has lost popularity. It's also not unusual for women to undergo a physical makeover following a divorce — intentionally or otherwise.

While it would be easy for this superstar to rely on one signature look after so many decades of experimenting with beauty, it doesn't seem that's her future. As Kidman told Vogue in 2025, "Taking a risk is what I've always done. You get back up and you try again and you learn." Though she may have been referring to filmmaking, the same can definitely be said for her iconic approach to beauty.
