Meghan Markle's Sheer Skirt Caused A Royal Stir During 2018 Trip To New Zealand

Meghan Markle had a sheer slip-up in New Zealand while touring with Prince Harry in November 2018. The couple, who had married earlier that same year in May, were on their first royal tour. The trip included stops in Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and their final destination, New Zealand. While there, the Duchess of Sussex wore a gorgeous navy and black outfit; she styled a navy shirt with a navy and black Givenchy skirt and a pair of sky-high heels. Overall, the outfit was great, but there was one hiccup. Unfortunately, her skirt appeared sheer in direct sunlight, and Markle neglected to wear a slip underneath her skirt. Spectators could see her black underwear through the garment while she greeted fans.

Since there is so much royal protocol around dressing, it's pretty evident that this was a wardrobe malfunction rather than an instance of Markle jumping on the transparent clothing trend. It could easily be counted as one example of an inappropriate outfit that royal women were caught wearing and since Markle was a working royal at this time, she fit into the grouping. The royal family has accumulated quite a list of outfits that were beyond controversial, and an underwear sighting certainly makes the list. But this isn't the only time that Markle had an underwear misfortune while she was part of the royal family. 

While Meghan Markle's sheer skirt in 2018 might have been one of her worst wardrobe malfunctions as a working royal, she had a few other incidents over the years. A few months before her trip to New Zealand, Markle and Prince Harry visited Ireland in July 2018. Markle emerged in a mushroom-grey boat neck dress by Roland Mouret. Because of the unique neckline, the Duchess of Sussex opted out of a traditional bra and instead wore a strapless bra. The only problem was that the dress was so tight around her chest that the evident outline of the bra proved very distracting. 

Markle suffered yet another bra mishap in August 2018. She and Harry attended the wedding of Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks, friends of Harry's. While at the wedding, the top button of Markle's blouse came undone, revealing her black lace bra. It was clearly a wardrobe malfunction and not a deliberate choice, because in earlier photos at the same wedding, Markle's top button is fastened, adding yet another instance where Markle's underwear made a surprise appearance. However, all of this fuss around royal dress codes would die down quickly; Markle and Harry stepped away from the royal family in March 2020, and she'd no longer have to worry about such restrictions. Markle went on to wear several spicy outfits that she could never have worn as a royal, so she got to break free from all of the scrutiny.
