We know sky-high stilettos, chunky platforms, and heavily pointed toes are among 2026's outdated heels – but what's in? Well, it's officially time to fall in love with your footwear. "Heel trends are reflective of how consumers are feeling, and I think women are craving romance again, not just visually, but emotionally," Arabella Barros, creative director for John Fluevog Shoes, exclusively tells Women.com. As easy as it is to pair simple black or nude heels with almost any outfit, this year, it's time to step outside of that classic but understated box and have more fun.

"The last few years have been centered on minimalism and practicality, and now there is more of a desire to dress with imagination and intention and step into a different, more creative world. Heel trends are reflecting that," Barros says (even though we're still seeing celebs in some seriously outdated footwear trends). "[...] We're seeing more creative, imaginative, and fun heel styles. Textures and surfaces are a key focus, embellishments and applications as well as ribbons and laces and a romantic textile," Barros adds. And these are the heel styles to keep your eye on.

Regency-style heels are bringing whimsy to 2026 'fits

One of the biggest heel trends of 2026 is stepping back in time. "With the desire to be more creative and romantic, I'm seeing 'regency' style [...] heels come in fashion," Arabella Barros tells us. To nail this trend, think along the lines of the shoes in Netflix's "Bridgerton" or Manolo Blahnik's Marie Antoinette inspired collection from last year, i.e. vintage looking footwear with a small, curve heel and pointed toes. Barros also recommends leaning into uber feminine styles. "This season we have a custom floral jacquard present, mixed with pink/silver emboss and soft suedes, like John Fluevog Zoe Lace-up Heels with Embroidery, John Fluevog Ficta Elegant Slingback Heels and John Fluevog Bishop Buckled Loafer Heels," she says.

Because regency-style heels are so quirky, they can easily further dress up an already whimsical outfit. Yet, they can also be toned down to avoid being too loud if you don't want to make a major statement. "Wear them with a long, flowy skirt to enhance the romance this spring," Barros recommends (which is perfect seeing as midi and maxi skirts are hot trends for spring 2026). Barros also suggests teaming them with neutral pants (such as ANRABESS' Wide Leg Linen Pants in Light Khaki or the ODODOS Modal Soft Wide Leg Pants in Smokey Taupe) to make the shoes the focus of your outfit.

Ruffled heels are dialing up the vintage flair

In a similar vein to the romance regency inspired heels are bringing to our feet, 2026 will also see the return of feminine, ruffled heels. "A heel designed with romance and a touch of a vintage flair lets someone walk through modern life while carrying a bit of daydream," Arabella Barros tells us, exclusively. "It's not about escaping reality; it's about adding softness, personality, and whimsy back into everyday dressing," she adds. Barros recommends the John Fluevog Sakura Mary Jane Heels with Ruffles or the John Fluevog Braeburn Heels, which also dial up the delicate energy via their floral design.

Because ruffles add a lot of volume and can easily be statement pieces, ruffled heels are usually best paired with simpler outfits. Denim can act as a neutral with a fun heel, so reach for mid- to high-rise jeans or a midi skirt. Both will keep your ruffle heels feeling modern, as they're two of the hottest denim trends of 2026.

Flower petals are decorating 2026's trendiest footwear

Floral petals are another 2026 heel trend to know about. But we're not just talking floral patterns like the ones on our dresses in summer 2025. This time, it's all about 3D petals and flowers like on the shoes Dior showed off at its fall 2026 footwear show during Paris Fashion Week. Try the LACIKOSZ Flower Kitten Heel Sandals or the MakeMeChic Open Toe Floral Kitten Heels for fun and flirty footwear that will take you from spring into summer — or even further if you're lucky enough to spend time in the sunshine.

Because flower petal footwear gives such strong sunshine vibes, this style works best with looser, resort wear-inspired outfits. They can complement a flowy maxi dress (such as the beachy Utcoco Striped Maxi Shirt Dress or the Sleeveless Mesh Ruffle Hem Maxi Dress from MIYIEONZ) or a trendy white maxi skirt.

Wide and box toe heels have replaced overly pointed toes

As pointed toe heels (not including regency styles) continue their descent out of favor, wider, boxier heels have arrived to take their place. "It is coming back for 2026 reimagined in more organic and unique shapes," Arabella Barros exclusively shares with us, confirming the trend has stemmed from the modern spin on '90s fashions we've seen a lot of this year. "What makes them more modern this season is the creative takes on silhouette and the use of brighter colors or as a slingback," Barros adds, highlighting the John Fluevog Primrose Double Strap Mary Jane Heels, John Fluevog Kecia Square Toe Pumps, and John Fluevog Ocotillo Pumps with Bow as trendy shoes of the moment.

To style the boxy heels' silhouette, Barros suggests reaching for wide-leg jeans. "I love a wider toe box heel with a pair of wide-leg or boyfriend jeans," she says. That'll put you very on-trend for spring 2026 too, as skinny jeans are still considered outdated denim (sorry, millennials).

Two-tone heels are double the fun

Seeing as we're looking to avoid boring, bland heels in 2026, it makes sense why two-tone heels are trending. Choosing heels featuring just two colors is an easy way to upgrade the classic all-black shoe the fashion world is moving away from. A second shade can add flair to an overly simplistic nude heel without taking away its ability to go with almost anything.

The WDIRARA Polka Dot Square Heels will not only tap into the square toe heel trend, but also into one of 2026's hottest patterns; polka dots! The fun print is everywhere for spring and could easily stick around a lot longer. Allegra K's Slingback Buckle Chunky Heel Sandals in Light Green also offer a practical option as a spill over from the low heel trend that took over in fall 2025. Two-tone heels can be a stylish way to upgrade a monochrome outfit on a lazy day (think an all-white ensemble with black-and-white heels). Not only will it make your single shade ensemble more interesting, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of dressing and matching colors.
