Dolly Parton Outfits That Are As Over-The-Top As Her Raucous Personality
Although plenty of celebrities go all out with glitz and glamour, Dolly Parton is in a league of her own. Not only has she been rocking over-the-top outfits since her career began, but she practically wrote the book on how to make sequins and rhinestones work for every occasion. And the best part about the way Parton dresses — unlike some celebrities — is that she's not doing it for attention. Parton is the real deal and has no reason to seek the spotlight — she is the spotlight.
In 1977, Parton was interviewed by Barbara Walters, who had the audacity to tell the icon that she didn't have to dress the way she did. "It's certainly a choice," Parton told Walters. "I don't like to be like everybody else. I've often made this statement that I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable, that's the easiest thing in the world to do ... I'm very real where it counts."
While Parton will always be known for her over-the-top outfits, we also can't forget how much of a humanitarian she is, too. Over the course of her career, Parton has a long list of philanthropic endeavors, including donating over 300 million books to children around the world through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, as well as raising and donating millions of dollars to various charities and programs. It's safe to say there's no one quite like Dolly Parton, and because of that, her legacy will live on forever, sequins and all.
Accidentally upstaging her colleagues
In November 1989, "Steel Magnolias" premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City, and the attendees did not disappoint. The film starred Hollywood veterans Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, and Shirley MacLaine, alongside newcomers Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah, but it was Dolly Parton who stole the show. In a bedazzled, fitted dress with a matching bolero, Parton stunned in every way possible. So much so, that Roberts, who was about to achieve leading-lady status the following year with "Pretty Woman," faded into the background next to all that sparkle.
Showcasing exactly how to rock a leg slit
When Dolly Parton attended the New York City premiere of her 1984 movie, "Rhinestone," she didn't wear a single rhinestone. Instead, Parton wore a fitted, off-the-shoulder white satin gown with black embroidery. While demure in theory, especially for Parton and her usual red carpet style, the gown's leg slit was the real standout feature, because it literally goes all the way up, well past her thigh, right to her hip. Although others have tried — think Angelina Jolie's leg slit moment of 2012 — no one has ever topped Parton's 1984 dress slit.
Proving patent leather can be a winning look
When Dolly Parton took the stage to perform "Jolene" at the 37th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in November 2022, she wore a patent leather jumpsuit embellished from the neck down. While patent leather on its own is shiny and doesn't need extra bedazzling, because it's Dolly, too much is never enough. Not only are there gold chains around the hips and shoulders, but at the knee of the jumpsuit, the patent leather stops and becomes a chiffon bell bottom. Why? Only Dolly knows.
Giving new meaning to the word icon
In May 2014, Dolly Parton returned to her home state of Tennessee to perform a benefit concert for Dolly's Imagination Library & Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation. In doing so, she brought both the country style she grew up with and the glamour she's embraced throughout her career to this orange jumpsuit, dripping with rhinestones and crystal fringes along the arms and from the waist. Like anyone who heads home to give back to the community from which they came, Parton made sure to do so in style.
Dazzling in gold for Jimmy Fallon
Most guests dress up for "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," but when Dolly Parton visited, she went above and beyond. For the occasion, Parton wore a bedazzled gold and white, knee-length dress with fringes along the hemline. She completed the look with sky-high gold heels, one of her go-to accessories. "I've loved high heels before I even knew I was going to be short," Parton told Vogue in October 2023. "I wear heels every day. I love the extra height ... I've always thought they were sexy. They make you look powerful."
Giving the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders some friendly competition
When Dolly Parton performed at a Cowboys game in 2023, she wore the iconic Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader uniform. Parton looked absolutely fantastic in white Daisy Dukes, a blue crop top, and a white starred vest. "I thought ... if I could pull this off, that'd be a cool little thing to do," Parton told Page Six in January 2024. "I thought most people would excuse me if it didn't turn out ... some older woman making a bad mistake. Or I thought, well, maybe it'll just be something cool to do."
Bringing a boatload of rock and roll to the red carpet
Before Dolly slipped into her black patent leather jumpsuit at the 37th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, she strutted the red carpet in this fitted, black, embellished dress and matching heels. As an inductee, Parton looked far more "rock and roll" than country star for the event, which ended up being fitting when she took the stage later that night. "I figured if I'm gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I'm gonna have to earn it," Parton said before her performance.
Opting for lace over rhinestones
When Dolly Parton attended the premiere of the 1980 movie, "9 to 5," she left the rhinestones at home, leaning into lace and frills instead. Standing alongside fellow stars Lily Tomlin and one of the celebrities who always takes activism to the next level, Jane Fonda, Parton looked like a toned-down version of herself in the pink dress and matching fur she wore that night. "I remember feeling really pretty," Parton told Vogue in 2020 about the Ann Roth ensemble. "That was probably the first time I ever felt fashionable."
Sliding into the future with lots of metallic
To support her 2023 album, "Rockstar," Dolly Parton attended a press conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in June of that year for a round of press photos. As a woman who loves a boatload of fringe, that's exactly what Parton brought to the photoshoot with this pink and silver embellished, off-the-shoulder dress. To complete the look, Parton leaned into the metallic trend of 2023 with thigh-high boots. As usual, she looked out of this world and like she's in another stratosphere than the rest of us, probably because she is.
Wowing the crowd in Glastonbury
If you thought you'd never see Dolly Parton at Glastonbury Festival, you missed out in 2014. For the performance, which had a bigger crowd than headliners Arcade Fire and Metallica, Parton wore snug, embellished flared pants and a fitted rhinestone top with a low-plunging neckline. During an interview with The BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show about her lasting appeal, "I've just been around a long, long time," said Parton. "I think people feel like they know me. I'm just like a big sister or a cousin or an aunt."
