Emma Stone Just Can't Dodge Rumors About Her Love Life

Emma Stone has emerged as one of the most celebrated actors of her generation, earning Oscars, Golden Globes, and even more nominations while appearing in a variety of projects. The Arizona native cemented herself as a comedy icon with movies like "Superbad" and "Easy A" before firmly demonstrating her award-winning dramatic acting skills in "La La Land." Additionally, the 2020s have seen the Hollywood figure pivot to weirder, more artsy projects, starring in Yorgos Lanthimos-directed films such as "Poor Things" and "Bugonia." 

While Stone, who's had a striking face transformation, is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, she's also been unable to dodge romance rumors since making this professional transition. Though she's been married to comedy writer Dave McCary since 2020, and the couple welcomed a child together in 2021, the internet has been theorizing about a romantic relationship between Stone and her four-time director Lanthimos. The Greek filmmaker is similarly married to an actor named Ariane Labed, but that hasn't stopped the rumors from flowing. 

A major conversation about the duo was sparked by a Reddit comment submitted to the Faux Moi subreddit in December 2024. The user claimed to have a friend in the industry with first-hand knowledge about an impending divorce between Stone and McCary that was prompted by an ongoing affair with Lanthimos. "Yorgos is allegedly less keen to leave his wife/partner," they claimed. While some fans scoffed at the speculation, especially given the unreliable source, whispers of an affair have continued over the years.

While there's no hard evidence confirming the relationship rumors surrounding Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos, the two have developed a close relationship, reflected in their decision to continually collaborate. During an interview with Screen Rant, Stone revealed that she originally met the filmmaker two years before working on "The Favourite," and that they developed a strong dynamic from there. 

"I just trust him implicitly as a filmmaker," Stone explained. "And that's the greatest gift as an actor to be able to really just let go and not feel that you need to watch yourself or anything ... and I have massive respect for him." Yorgos has similarly expressed admiration for the actor, echoing that the duo got to know one another in the years leading up to their first project. "Then when we actually had the working experience, it just was obvious that we got along and we like working together," he told The Hollywood Reporter. 

Given that there have been countless incidents of artists becoming romantically entangled with their muses, it isn't surprising that Lanthimos and Stone's intimate and ongoing connection has bred rumors. The explicit element of many of the filmmaker's projects, which has centered Stone in erotic situations, has undoubtedly contributed to the gossip as well. Still, without anything to back up the speculation, it seems like Emma Stone and Dave McCary are poised to join the list of celebrities who have laughed off divorce rumours.
