You Won't Recognize Margot Robbie Without Her Signature Blond Hair
From one of her breakout roles as Naomi in the famed "The Wolf of Wall Street" to her stint as the playfully unhinged Harley Quinn in a smattering of DC films, Margot Robbie's most iconic roles see the Australian native in some variation of her signature blond hair color. She really embodied the hue when headlining as the titular Barbie in Greta Gerwig's 2023 film, landing among celebrities who took method dressing to the next level at the same time. With all this blond notoriety, it was startling to see the star step out at the 2014 Oscars with dark brunette hair.
Robbie opted for classic Hollywood glamour for the red carpet event, wearing her nearly-black tresses with face-framing finger waves and curls around her shoulders. She carried this moody romance into the rest of her styling, wearing diamond-encrusted jewelry and a swipe of berry lip color. As for her dress, the "Suicide Squad" actor donned a Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane gown featuring subtle glimmers across the strapless bodice and a large bow atop a cutout in the back.
Robbie originally debuted the major change online, posting a since-deleted brown-haired selfie to the celebrity platform WhoSay. She revealed in the photo's caption that her new look was for her role in "Z for Zachariah," a science fiction movie that paired her with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine. Regardless of why she made the change, it was a major shock to see the star walk the red carpet with such a drastically different 'do.
This isn't the first time that Margot has gone brunette
While Margot Robbie is known as a blond bombshell, the "Babylon" actor's startling Oscars look wasn't her first foray into a darker hair color. When speaking to Elle about the change, she revealed that brown was actually her go-to hue before she was in the spotlight. "I had it this color all through high school actually," the actor said. "I always dyed it dark in high school. I was devastated when I had to go blond."
At the same time, Robbie's natural hair color comes as a surprise to many, as she's not as bright a blond as her "Barbie" counterpart. Taking into account snapshots of grown-out roots alongside throwback photos from childhood, it's likely that the star's natural hue is somewhere between dirty blond and light brown. She even confirmed her need for root management when shouting out Klorane Dry Shampoo. "If you've got [blond] hair it's the best because it covers your roots and makes it look like you just got them done," she told Coveteur.
Either way, Robbie has warmed up to the lighter shades she typically takes to the red carpet. "Once I was blond for a couple of years I ended up loving it," she told Elle. "But I don't have a preference. I like both [brunette and blond]." In the same way, though seeing the Hollywood figure as a brunette requires a double-take, Robbie definitely ranks among the celebrities who can effortlessly pull off both light and dark hair colors.
