Melania Trump And Usha Vance Were On The Same Style Page For Once At 2026 SOTU

Throughout President Donald Trump's second presidential term, Melania Trump and Usha Vance have demonstrated their stark style differences. Melania has developed a reputation for her high fashion ensembles, wearing head-turning pieces from designers like Hervé Pierre and Alexander McQueen. Though Usha has worn some on-trend outfits since JD Vance assumed the role of vice president, the second lady has meanwhile demonstrated her preference for timeless staples.

With these differences in mind, it was surprising to see the ladies sharing an in-sync style moment at the 2026 State of the Union, which took place on February 24 in the U.S. Capitol. Melania opted for a Dolce & Gabbana pantsuit consisting of a single-buttoned blazer and a white button-up, styling the classic pieces with a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels. While somewhat reminiscent of a traditional tuxedo, Melania added some feminine touches to the chic ensemble by styling her signature long hair with middle-parted volume, and sporting a classic French manicure.

Usha took a similar approach to her SOTU ensemble, channeling monochromatic elegance in an all-black satin pantsuit. She accessorized with a pendant necklace and simple stud earrings, pulling her silver-streaked tresses into a modest updo. Though the brand behind the look isn't obvious, the second lady definitely stayed true to her penchant for understated style with the outfit. While each lady's look was distinct, Melania and Usha were surprisingly on the same page with their dark pantsuits.

Melania and Usha have different relationships to fashion

Melania Trump and Usha Vance's style differences are evident in their typically contrasting looks, with their pared-back pantsuit moment at the 2026 SOTU being a notable exception. Even so, their differing approaches to fashion really aren't surprising with each of their backgrounds in mind.

Long before she assumed the role of first lady, Melania Trump pursued a career in modeling starting at the age of 16. She experienced notable success in the European fashion industry, working in Milan and Paris, before relocating to New York City in the '90s and gracing the pages of magazines like Sports Illustrated. The Slovenia native also attributes her love for fashion to her mother's profession, putting her ongoing affinity for in vogue and designer brands in context. "I always loved fashion. My mother was a fashion designer so it was always in my blood," she told People in 2020.

Meanwhile, Usha Vance has a much more fashionably-subdued background, earning a BA in history before graduating from Yale Law School in 2013. She's worked as a clerk to two different federal judges and also served as an associate at San Francisco law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, positions which undoubtedly required a professional, straight-forward approach to style. "I've always tried to have a pretty small wardrobe and to wear things basically until they wear out," she said on the "Citizen McCain with Meghan McCain" podcast. With all this in mind, we'll be surprised to see Melania and Usha landing on the same style page again anytime soon.
