Strange Things About Victoria And David Beckham's Marriage
Victoria Beckham and David Beckham's marriage has lasted an eternity by Hollywood standards. The couple tied the knot in 1999 and have had the world enthralled ever since as they welcomed four children and dominated the fashion and sports worlds. But there are some strange things in their marriage that we can't ignore.
One of the oddest is the rampant affair rumors and how they've handled them. Though they've been honest about other parts of their lives, they've seemingly danced around allegations Rebecca Loos made to News of the World in 2004, claiming she had an affair with David. David hit back in a somewhat elusive statement issued to The Guardian, stating, "The simple truth is that I am very happily married and have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change this." Victoria also appeared to address the incident in the Netflix documentary "Beckham." She didn't mention Loos explicitly, but said of the time her husband was accused of cheating (via Daily Mail), "It was the hardest period for us. Because it felt like the world was against us ... we were against each other ... it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was."
To make matters worse, that wasn't the only time David was accused of stepping out. Sarah Marbeck also purported to have had an affair with the athlete to News of the World, while Celina Laurie shared a similar story with The People. "He showed no remorse for Victoria and his family," Laurie even claimed (via Mirror). Though Victoria and David weathered that storm, cheating allegations are just one of the weird things we've noticed about the Beckhams.
David Beckham sprung moves to other countries on his wife
There are many athlete/singer pairings out there (Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, Ciara and Russell Wilson, and Vanessa Hudgens and Cole Tucker, to name a few), but not many have been vocal about the pressures of relocating to accommodate the other's career. Victoria has moved around the world for her husband, including suddenly swapping the U.K. for Spain after David moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid. In a letter to her younger self published by British Vogue, Victoria wrote, "A lot of your time there will be really hard. I'm not afraid to say now what a horribly difficult time it was." She also opened up about how sudden the move was in their Netflix documentary "Beckham." "Less than ideal," she called relocating (via Daily Mail), admitting David only told her they were leaving 12 hours before they flew to Spain. "I was like, 'What do you mean we don't have anywhere to live, we don't have schools for the children, what do you mean?' But the reality is that we moved to Spain."
The family later relocated to Los Angeles, where David then sprung a move to Italy on his wife and children. Victoria recalled telling her husband in "Beckham" (via Daily Mail), "What do you mean you wanna go to Milan? We've just moved from one side of the world to other for you! ... I respected his career and always have done immensely, but not again. I was really upset and off he went." There are a lot of things to consider before moving for a partner, and it's imperative that the person overhauling their life for someone else is truly happy with the decision. And it sounds like that wasn't always the case for Victoria.
She's admitted to internalizing negative feelings about her husband
Amid Victoria Beckham's gorgeous transformation, she's been very open about the fact that her marriage to David Beckham hasn't always been peachy keen. She even suggested in "Beckham" that she felt he often put his career before her and their children. Speaking about the intense focus he had on soccer, she said (via Standard), "Did I resent David? If I am being totally honest, yes I did. It was probably, if I'm being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my life. It wasn't that I felt unheard because I chose to internalize a lot of it because I was always mindful of a focus that he needed." David also spoke candidly about his decision-making. Speaking about playing for an Italian soccer team in the documentary series, he said (via Daily Mail), "Selfishly that was me saying 'Doesn't matter what any of you think, this is what I need to do.' I wasn't thinking about my teammates, I wasn't thinking about my family, I was thinking about me."
While it's understandable that Victoria didn't feel she could speak to David about how she was feeling at such a low point in their marriage, it wasn't the best way to handle the situation. Embracing emotional vulnerability and being expressive with your feelings is imperative to a successful relationship. Relationship counsellor Stephanie Ambrosius opened up to Latte Lounge about why communication is so vital for both people in a relationship, explaining, "You're partners, you're in it together, so ask what you can do to support them. They may not have the solution, but sometimes it's a discussion, and you decide together how you can support them. So communication on both sides is very important."
Victoria Beckham claimed David Beckham wears her underwear
There's nothing wrong with a couple sharing a wardrobe. Gender inclusivity in clothing is super important, and a couple buying fewer pieces between them can be so much better for the environment. Sharing undies though? Not so much, because wearing the same underwear (even if it's been thoroughly washed) can be unhygienic.
Back in 2000, though, Victoria made a shocking admission about her and David's underwear drawers. The former Spice Girl said of her partner on the British morning show "Big Breakfast" (via BBC News), "He likes to borrow my knickers." The former Spice Girl then took things one step further, claiming he particularly liked to wear her thongs. Though Victoria then said she was only joking, the host retorted, "I know you're not joking — you're trying to make out you are now, but he wears your pants." But even if Victoria was just kidding around, we're guessing David probably wasn't too thrilled about his wife discussing his intimate garment choices on national TV.
They're total opposites when it comes to cleaning
Despite being together so many years, Victoria and David Beckham are total opposites when it comes to keeping things tidy. Victoria gave fans a peek at their different habits when she showed her messy bedroom in a YouTube video. "You can see why I drive my husband crazy, because he is super, super tidy. This would be giving David a panic attack now, a full-on panic attack," she said while showing towels on the floor and an unmade bed.
It's not strange for opposites attract, but it is odd these two have made it work for so long, considering David is the total opposite. In 2006, he told Daily Mail that he has obsessive compulsive disorder. "I have to have everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs," he said. He later opened up about his desire to have everything clean and in order on "Beckham," sharing (via Daily Mail), "I clean [the house] so well, I'm not sure it's actually appreciated so much by my wife, in all honesty. The fact that when everyone's in bed, I then go around, clean the candles, turn the lights on to the right setting, make sure everywhere is tidy." He added, "I hate coming down in the morning and there's cups and plates and bowls. It's tiring going around every single candle cleaning it."
Though they've made it this far, David seemingly taking on all the cleaning responsibilities could still potentially cause problems. His constant need to clean while she often keeps things untidy could lead to David feeling some resentment. Equally, Victoria could feel she's unable to live the way she truly wants to if everything always has to be in order.
