Sasha Obama's Gorgeous Transformation Since Leaving The White House

Growing up under the spotlight, especially when it isn't your choice, shapes a person in ways very few people will ever be able to comprehend. When you're the daughter of a sitting president, like Sasha Obama was, that reality takes on an entirely different magnitude. At the age of seven, the youngest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama moved into the White House, and was nearly sixteen when her father completed his second term.

While most kids had relatively private, low-key childhoods, Sasha's unfolded in front of constant media attention, with most of her everyday milestones photographed for the public to see. From accompanying her parents to formal state dinners to intimate family vacation moments, much of Sasha's life was always readily available to the public. Since leaving the White House, while her parents love to keep everyone updated on their family life, Sasha has remained quite private. Despite being part of Gen Z, she doesn't even have a public Instagram account.

That early level of extensive public visibility makes her transition into adulthood especially striking. From preparing for life beyond the presidency by respectfully getting a summer job, to working as the casting interviewer for a hit docuseries, Sasha has had a gorgeous transformation since bidding farewell to life in the White House.

2016: Sasha Obama prepared for life beyond the White House by taking a summer job

It's clear that Barack and Michelle Obama prioritized grounding their daughters in normalcy as they prepared to leave life in the White House behind. One of the earliest signs of that transition came when Sasha Obama landed her very first summer job. Rather than stepping into a cushy part-time role her father could have easily secured for her, she took on a very typical summer job for teenagers. In 2016, the Boston Herald reported that the teenager was seen serving tables at her family's favorite restaurant in Martha's Vineyard.

What many people may not realize is that, for a former first daughter, even having a summer job came with extraordinary measures. Throughout her days as a server, six members of the Secret Service had to accompany her. It's a reminder that "normal" looks very different for the youngest daughter of a former U.S. president. This is something their mother, Michelle, who is credited with writing one of the best books by first ladies, has emphasized over and over again.

In an April 2025 podcast episode of "Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa" (via Elle), the former first lady said she put forth extra effort to ensure her daughters would stay grounded. Due to her daughters' security detail requirements, everyday activities, like working a summer job or going over to a friend's house, came with a lot of planning. Michelle told Kelly Ripa that a team would have to visit said friend's house, 'and question and search your house and ask if you had drugs and guns.'

2019: Sasha Obama graduated high school and headed to the University of Michigan

Barack and Michelle Obama have long been known for their work ethic, sense of purpose, and discipline. And, these were values that clearly carried over into how they raised Sasha and her older sister, Malia, who has also had her own stunning transformation since leaving the White House. That dedicated mindset became evident in the smallest things the two former first daughters did, including the widely reported instance in 2017 when Sasha missed her father's farewell luncheon because she had an exam. It's evident that for the Obama family, academic responsibility took priority over Dad stepping down from his role as the most powerful person in the country.

The same discipline carried into Sasha's next big chapter of life: graduating from high school and starting college. In the fall of 2019, the youngest Obama started as a freshman at the University of Michigan.

A student who was in the same lecture as her had nothing but great things to say about the former president's daughter on a Reddit discussion asking University of Michigan students if they had ever had class with anyone famous. "I had a 50-60 person lecture with Sasha Obama my freshman year. She seemed cool, had great outfits, and always sat at the front of lecture. Asked genuine questions," they explained. Unfortunately, Sasha's freshman year coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted in-person lectures, and students had to take distance learning courses.

2022: Sasha Obama transferred to USC to be closer to her sister

In 2022, Sasha Obama transferred from the University of Michigan to the University of Southern California. And while the transfer could have well been motivated by the fact that USC is well-known for its sociology program, it's said she also wanted to be closer to her sister Malia, who made L.A. her new home after graduating from Harvard University in 2021. This isn't surprising, as their parents have often shared that the sisters have a close bond.

In 2022, Michelle Obama sat down with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager for the TODAY show and shared a lighthearted story about how the girls asked that coasters be used when setting their drinks down when they invited Michelle and Barack Obama over for dinner at their place. Michelle also noted that, although there was a time when the two sisters didn't want to be near one another, "The thing that I love the most is those two girls are each other's best friend."

Her mother's story gave a glimpse into Sasha's recent move to L.A., and it felt both familiar and grounded. As the daughter of a former U.S. president, it's easy for people to assume her everyday life might feel far removed from the ordinary. Instead, from moving in with her sister to hosting casual family dinners, her day-to-day sounded much like that of any young adult trying to navigate life in a new city.

2023: Sasha Obama graduated from USC as a sociology major

By May 2023, Michelle and Barack Obama were the proud parents of two college graduates. Sasha Obama graduated from USC with a degree in sociology, and her parents and sister attended the graduation to celebrate the big milestone. While many were curious about what might come next for the recent graduate at the time, Sasha appeared content simply soaking up her life in Los Angeles and enjoying a more relaxed post-grad chapter.

Despite maintaining an even lower profile than her older sister, Malia Obama, Sasha was occasionally spotted out and about in the city, enjoying her post-grad life. For instance, there were photos of her in June 2023, leaving a house party in West Hollywood looking like any other Gen Z. A few months later, she and Malia were spotted hanging out with Drake, a sighting that quickly had the internet talking.

While fans weren't crazy about the idea of the former first daughters hanging out with Drake, many were also just as shocked to see how much they had grown up since their days in the White House. Sasha's evolving style throughout her life in L.A. also gained attention around this time. When a Redditor posted a style highlight of the former first daughter, many observers couldn't help but compliment Sasha on her many cool "It Girl" looks. One Redditor said, "She looks like the lead in a Netflix teen drama (I mean this in the absolute BEST way)."

2024: Sasha Obama pursued higher education and also worked as a casting interviewer for the docuseries, Couples Therapy

Whether you knew it or not, in 2024, you might have seen a professional project on which Sasha Obama was credited. In the ending credits of the fourth season of Showtime's viral docuseries, "Couples Therapy," fans quickly took notice as Sasha's legal name, Natasha Obama, appeared as the Casting Interviewer. The credit offered a rare glimpse into her life beyond the public spotlight and just being known as a former U.S. president's daughter.

While Sasha keeps much of her life private, and fans were surprised to see her name on a popular Showtime docuseries, fans can always count on her mom, Michelle Obama, to share small updates about what her daughters have been up to. In December 2024, Sasha was photographed back on USC's campus, and people were obviously curious. Later in the month, her mother scratched that itch for fans as she confirmed in an episode of "The Jennifer Hudson Show" that her youngest daughter did return to school. She also shared that they were waiting for Sasha to finish finals before jetting off to Hawaii to spend time with her husband's side of the family.

Sasha is continuing to thrive in L.A. and seems to be taking up creative hobbies like crocheting. In early 2025, she was spotted at a park, just sitting on the grass and focused on a crochet project. It's a simple moment that shows how comfortably the 24-year-old has settled into her life in L.A.
