Reese's Book Club has recommended so many titles since the "Legally Blonde" and "Big Little Lies" star founded it in 2017. From monthly thriller and mystery picks to books that feel like a warm hug, Witherspoon's selections are full of variety. But if you're new to the actor's reading community, there's so much choice and diversity it can be hard to know what to pick up after reading the latest month's release. Plus, not every pick is going to resonate with every reader, and that's okay. In many cases, finding the right book comes down to going beyond the simple star ratings and critic reviews. That's where consulting your birth chart comes in handy.
Witherspoon, an Aries celeb who perfectly embodies her zodiac sign, embodies the fierce, adventurous spirit of her sun through the many roles she takes on portraying strong-minded women. It makes sense that many of her book club selections feature female main characters who are fearless about going after what they want. While we're sure many of these titles will resonate with people regardless of their sign, we've gone step further to curate a list of Reese's Book Club picks that seem tailor-made for each zodiac sign. No matter if you're a Pisces looking to scratch that creative and magic-loving itch, or a sultry Taurus wanting something spicier and more tantalizing, there's a story for your TBR list. And, yes, Witherspoon really does read all her own book club picks, so you know you'll be in good company with this southern belle's choices.
This article contains spoilers.
Aquarius: Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, by Brené Brown
In addition to being strong-minded and independent, Aquarians are notorious for their desire to stand out from the crowd. With that in mind,Reese's Book Club's January 2018 pick, the psychological "Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone" by social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, is perfect for tapping into those traits. The poignant non-fiction book challenges the notion of fitting in and conforming and will pique the Aquarian's analytical mind by dissecting what it really means to be part of a society and community.
"The reason this book spoke to me ... was because the discussion about the need to belong was so impactful," one GoodReads review stated. "I found it meaningful, heartfelt, and the themes of belonging and being brave really resonated with me," they added. Witherspoon was equally complimentary when announcing the pick on Reese's Book Club's Instagram, sharing, "Brené Brown speaks of how divided our world is politically, socially, racially, and how we can bridge that divide with more civility and consciousness. Listening is key. Compassion is key. Be strong in your beliefs but not without the ability to learn more."
Pisces: The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
Alice Hoffman's "The Rules of Magic" engages with the Piscean love of creativity and magic, as well as appealing to their notoriously compassionate and emotional side. The fiction novel, which was selected as Reese's Book Club's October 2018 pick, takes place in the "Practical Magic" universe and tells the Owens family's origin story. Set in the 1600s, our plot begins with one of the women being accused of witchcraft after falling in love. Decades later, three young girls in her bloodline (who "Practical Magic" fans may recognize) develop mysterious supernatural powers and are forced to live by strict rules to avoid the world finding out about their secret. The sisters are told by their mom to avoid falling in love at all costs so they don't suffer the same fate as their ancestor — but of course, they later find they can't resist its charms. What could be more perfect for Pisces, aka one of the zodiac signs who are considered true romantics?
The reviews prove why Reese Witherspoon felt compelled to make this book one of her early selections. "All I can say is that you must experience its magic for yourself. It worked for me.," one GoodReads reviewer shared. Writing about the book on Instagram, Witherspoon shared, "This story is full of magic, love, family, heartbreak and redemption ... I got so swept up in this enchanting story."
Aries: Daisy Jones & The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid
You're probably already be familiar with the Reese's Book Club's March 2019 pick "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Witherspoon loved this non-fiction book so much she served as the executive producer on the TV adaptation under her Hello Sunshine production company. Just like the titular Daisy Jones, people who fall under the Aries zodiac tend to be brave and driven, and are often drawn to fame and showbiz, so they're likely to feel seen when reading about her musical adventures. It tells the story of a woman who moves to L.A. in the '60s with the hopes of becoming a rock star. She finds success as a singer in tinsel town but soon gets paired up with a rock band, which results in her fame reaching dizzying new heights — and all that entails. "I LOVED this book! Read in a day! Didn't realize it was not a true band until the end when I actually read the cover!" one fan commented on Reese's Book Club's Instagram announcement.
Taurus: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, by Balli Kaur Jaswal
"Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows" by Balli Kaur Jaswal will speak to the Taurus' sensual side. This zodiac is ruled by Venus, which is why a natural penchant for luxury and flirtatiousness are high on the list of its personality traits. In Reese's Book Club's March 2018 pick, we learn about Nikki, who teaches creative writing to adults within the Punjabi community. After one student (who doesn't understand English) brings an erotic book to class, Nikki discovers her class has a sensual side — and she encourages them to embrace it. But Nikki faces backlash and serious scandal after the conservative, religious community around her learn what's going on in the classroom. It's then up to Nikki and the women she teaches to stand up for their right to explore their sexuality.
"'Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows" has something for everyone: It's a mystery, a romance, a family drama... and yes, it's [three fire emoji]!" Reese's Book Club teased on Instagram. "This is a story about liberating women at every age, and empowering them to express their hopes, their dreams and what makes them feel good," they added. Readers were also full of praise on GoodReads, where one five-star review read, "This is a story of women finding the courage to express their sexuality and become both more decisive and more independent."
Gemini: All That Life Can Afford, by Emily Everett
Many Geminis have a penchant for partying and the finer things in life, intertwined with a passion for moving fast and gossiping. Reese's Book Club's April 2025 pick, "All That Life Can Afford" by Emily Everett, makes for perfect entertainment for this air sign. The book follows protagonist Anna, who lives a very modest life in London until she meets a wealthy family who invite her to live it up in Saint-Tropez as a tutor for their teenage daughter. While in the lavish French town, Anna becomes accustomed to a much more luxurious, fast-paced life. Romance comes knocking when she meets two men, but Anna must decide if she wants a partner who can show her a life of luxury she's gotten used to and always aspired to, or one who truly sees her for who she is and understands the more modest life she lived before.
A GoodReads review highlighted why it will strike a chord with many of the Geminis who get wrapped up in outward perception, stating, "At its core, the story captures the messy, complex emotions of being young and naïve. Anna's longing to belong, her desire to appear as though she's made it, and the selfish choices she makes along the way all felt painfully real. She's too busy defending herself, rationalizing her behavior, and wallowing in self-pity to fully see the people around her." Reese Witherspoon shared praise for the non-fiction novel on Instagram, writing, "'All That Life Can Afford' by Emily Everett is about love, ambition, and the cost of belonging, and I cannot stop thinking about it."
Cancer: Throwback by Maurene Goo
Reese's Book Club's winter 2024 Young Adult pick, Maurene Goo's "Throwback," will cater to the Cancer passion for nostalgia and sentimentality. Following an argument with her mom, Samantha Kang finds herself magically transported from modern day back to the '90s. While in the era of the Spice Girls, lava lamps, and blue eyeshadow (as well as other '90s trends we want to see come back), she meets her mom as one of her schoolmates. Samantha gets a front row seat to her immigrant mother's experience of growing up in a time before smart phones and social media, but soon learns she needs to help and form a genuine bond with her to get back to the present day.
"Prepare to feel all the feelings," Reese's Book Club wrote on X when announcing the pick, suggesting it will also tap into the Cancer tendency to swap moods rapidly. One reader on GoodReads also commented on how the book uses nostalgia to show how far society has come (and not come) since the '90s. "I liked the contrast between Samantha and the '90s and I do think there were some really interesting lessons in this novel about generational trauma and misunderstandings," they wrote.
Leo: Did You Hear About Kitty Karr?, by Crystal Smith Paul
Leos tend to be popular and are notorious for loving attention, which is why "Did You Hear About Kitty Karr?" by Crystal Smith Paul is this zodiac's ideal read from Reese's Book Club. The May 2023 selection encompasses the glitz and glamor of fame, as well as the pitfalls that come with it, when Kitty Karr, a major celebrity, dies leaving her fortune to three young women she seemingly didn't even know. That includes Elise St. John, who is already rich and famous in her own right. Virgo: Fair Play: A Game Changing Solution When You Have Too Much To Do (And More Life to Live), by Eve Rodsky
Virgos are famously hard workers who love to volunteer and help others, but this earth sign's good-nature can sometimes be to their detriment. In October 2019's Reese's Book Club pick, "Fair Play: A Game Changing Solution When You Have Too Much To Do (And More Life to Live)" by Eve Rodsky, Rodsky shares her experience of adding up the hours of housework she's done in addition to her full-time job. She writes about how she shared the results of her unpaid home labor with her husband, but was left unimpressed by his response to all her work. To even up the unequal labor, Rodsky created Fair Play, a new way of quickly and easily dividing up household tasks. Rodsky's method, which is explained in the book, could be a wake-up call for busy Virgos trying to balance a busy home and work life with little help.
"This book creates solutions for you to run your household," Witherspoon said in a Reese's Book Club video. "...I found myself highlighting so many parts of this book. I feel like it's really one of those books that you just read and you underline and you share it with a girlfriend." A four-star GoodReads review stated of the self-help book, "It was a light bulb that has been broken finally getting fixed and turning on for the first time. A 'well duh, that makes sense' moment. A self-actualization, a relationship development, a change of habit that completely changed our life."
Libra: Still Lives, by Maria Hummel
Libras are well-known for being empathetic with a flair for all things aesthetically pleasing. As such, Reese's Book Club choice from August 2018, "Still Lives" by Maria Hummel, will tap into those characteristics. The non-fiction novel begins by inviting us into the life of Kim Lord, a high-flying artist who creates a controversial exhibition of portraits showing her dressed up as real-life murdered women. However, she fails to show up to the opening of her macabre collection and when it becomes apparent she hasn't been in touch with anyone to share her whereabouts, her ex-boyfriend becomes a suspect in her disappearance. Gallery worker Maggie Richter decides to find out what happened to Maria, which is where the Libra tendency to overthink will surely come in handy to try and solve this artsy mystery.
Speaking about the page-turner in a Reese's Book Club video, Reese Witherspoon teased, "You will not be able to put this one down ... you will not believe what happens at the end." A glowing GoodReads review also shared, "There is a full, well rounded supporting cast and plenty of interpersonal drama ... This is a well done, well thought out story and is so much more than just a thriller."
Scorpio: Anatomy: A Love Story, by Dana Schwartz
One of Scorpio's most defining character traits is their devotion to what they care about. They're also honest and ambitious, just like Hazel Sinnett, the main character in "Anatomy" by Dana Schwartz, a dark non-fiction book set in the 1800s. Hazel is determined to one day become a surgeon but hits a road block when she's told she'll never achieve her dream because she's a woman. Like many Scorpios, Hazel remains determined to achieve her goals, but her life changes forever when she meets Jack, whose profession involves selling bodies. Hazel realizes that this kind of access to cadavers may be to her advantage, as it would enable her to practice surgery. But, by working together, they come across some dark secrets in the cemetery and beyond.
The gothic book, which was Reese's Book Club's choice for Young Adult winter 2022, had Reese Witherspoon gushing on Instagram, "It is so good... It's got so many twists and turns [and] a scary reveal at the end. I loved every page of this book." Many GoodReads reviews were equally complimentary, which one reader writing, "As sparks fly around [the main characters], they do everything to concentrate on their jobs. But as you may see: The intimate romance blossoms at most inappropriate places."
Sagittarius: Starling House, by Alix E. Harrow
Many Sagittarians are known for being philosophical, optimistic, and open-minded, and Alix E. Harrow's "Starling House" is sure to engage with those personality traits. The book club pick from October 2023 is all about Opal, who lives in a mystical Kentucky town famous where not much happens — apart from bad luck. Years earlier, the town was famously the home of an author who suddenly disappeared and left his mysterious home to his kin, Arthur Starling. The residents know better than to question what goes on inside the creepy house and what really happened to the author, but open-minded Opal finds herself drawn to the eerie property like home. Only, there are forces on the house she can't ignore, and she learns all about its secrets and the mysteries of its long-missing former resident to find positivity in the darkness.
In one 4.5-star GoodReads review, a reader wrote, "I loved how dark and whimsical this felt, almost like a Dark Fairy Tale, but while also containing an 'our world' modern feel." Reese Witherspoon was equally drawn in by the tale. "This book has everything you could possibly want this fall ... a cursed town, a haunted house, a vivid & eerie setting — plus, characters willing to risk everything," she wrote on Instagram, making it ideal for a Sagittarius who is looking for some light in the dark.
Capricorn: Maybe Next Time, by Cesca Major
In Reese's Book Club November 2023 pick, "Maybe Next Time" by Cesca Major, protagonist Emma embodies the traits of a true Capricorn. She's a high-powered career woman with a family, but she lets work take over her life, which pushes her to forget what's truly important. However, after her husband dies tragically following a heated argument, Emma wakes up the next day to find he's still alive and she's trapped in a "Groundhog Day" style cycle that can't be broken until she finds a better way to balance her personal and professional life. The non-fiction book may strike a chord with busy Capricorns, who are known for being practical, persistent, and disciplined, while also delivering an important lesson about making time for what's truly important.
Witherspoon announced this choice on stage at her Shine Away 2023 event — two years before we were lucky enough to attend her Shine Away 2025 gathering and take lots of pics — and told attendees, "Everybody here you're going to love this book." And many readers did. "It touched me. There is a message in this one. Questions to contemplate... Do we have our priorities straight in this life? What truly is important?" one GoodReads reviewer shared. "In this particular story, the character will be faced with whether she can realize any of this in time," they added.
