Melania Trump's Chicest Coat Moments (She Loves A Good Trench)

While first lady Melania Trump has always been a fashionable dresser, it's evident that she stepped things up to a whole new level for Donald Trump's second term as president. Gone are the scandalous, sartorial pieces — no one will ever forget the infamous "I really don't care, do u?" jacket — that got the media into a frenzy during her first stint in the White House. As of 2025, Melania's style transformation continues, with her opting for pieces that embody timeless and classic elegance. But often what ties everything together is her choice of outerwear. From classic styles to bold and outlandish pieces, the first lady is constantly leaving people impressed with her rotation of coats, jackets, and capes. Things are even more polished, but somehow, out of everything she wears, her coats are stealing the show.

Melania was a Christmas vision in her red Chanel coat

Melania Trump often pushes fashion limits, but she can also keep things traditional. She did this at the White House Tree Lighting Ceremony in December 2017 when she wore a red, tweed coat by Chanel. The festive, knee-length jacket was embellished by gold stitching that coordinated well with her caramel-toned Christian Louboutin stilettos. The coat came from Paris' 2016 Metiers d'Art runway, thus bringing further luxury to the event. It was very cheerful and appropriate the Christmastime event.

Melania's yellow cape coat was epic

In December 2019, Donald and Melania Trump arrived at Buckingham Palace for a reception hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II before the NATO summit. The first lady brought some sunshine with her, wearing a bright yellow Valentino cape coat. She played with contrast by wearing a fuchsia Hervé Pierre dress underneath the canary yellow cape and coordinating stilettos in the same shade by Christian Louboutin. The late British monarch was a fan of wearing bright, bold colors, so it's entirely possible that Melania was having fun with color to honor her host.

Melania wore a bold, red leather trench in Georgia

Cherry was a signature color trend in 2025, but Melania Trump may have been ahead of the game when she wore a leather trench coat in that color back in December 2020, for a political rally in Georgia. The double breasted, $6,200 number from Alexander McQueen was hard to miss as she wore it as a statement piece. She completed the look with zebra print heels and a black top, allowing the coat to speak for itself.

Melania's zebra print coat at Madison Square Garden was dazzling

Donald Trump held a rally at Madison Square Garden on October 27, 2024 and Melania Trump made a surprise appearance and spoke to the crowd. She stepped out in a bold zebra-print coat from Michael Kors. The sensational coat, complete with a tie belt, stole the show at the very flashy rally. For fans of the look, Melania's stylist Herve Pierre explained that he had purchased the coat on Madison Avenue at the Michael Kors store years earlier, according to WWD. So if anyone wants to recreate the exact look, they're out of luck. "It was a few seasons ago and there was only one," Pierre explained.

Melania's simple grey coat was a hit

Trump's second term was the dawning of a new era for Melania; she tweaked her style for a much more muted, serious wardrobe. But that doesn't mean her looks were dull. This is evident in the outfit she wore for a joint congress session led by her husband in March 2025. Melania kept things simple and wore a grey, tweed jacket by Christian Dior, which retails for $5,500. The classic outerwear featured a coordinating scarf, cinched together with a black belt that gave the outfit dimension and a polished appearance.

Her leopard print coat at the International Women of Courage Award was sensational

During the International Women of Courage Awards in Washington, DC in April 2025, Melania Trump wore a $11,000 Milly Park leopard print coat. The sensational calfskin, belted look was obviously the star piece of her outfit, as she wore a simple black dress underneath. The designer spoke to WWD after the first lady stepped out in her design and told the outlet that she had sent her the coat as a gift. "I'm beyond honored and shocked that the first lady wore my piece today....This is something to celebrate about," Park said. This was great publicity for the budding designer.

Melania Trump's leather Easter coat was a chic trench

For an Easter celebration at the White House in April 2025, Melania Trump wore a cream, leather trench coat by the Canadian brand Mackage that was the perfect choice for Easter. The coat, which retails for $1890, featured an epaulette to give it that distinct, film noir feel. It tied at the waist and ended past her knees, creating an elegant silhouette. Trump paired the coat with leather Roger Vivier heels.

Melania Trump wore an Italian trench en route to Rome

In April 2025, Donald and Melania Trump departed the White House to fly to Rome for Pope Francis' funeral. For the travel day, Melania opted for a Dolce & Gabbana trench coat in an oatmeal tone. Wearing an Italian designer to fly to Italy was certainly a moment of diplomatic dressing, but opting for simple accessories is what made if a true fashion moment. Since she was on the move that day, the first lady styled the trench with black Roger Vivier flats and a black Hermès Birkin bag, keeping the look grounded in neutral tones.

Melania's floor-length trench coat was so diplomatic

Paying homage to one of the great fashion houses of the United Kingdom, Melania Trump nailed diplomatic dressing by wearing a floor-length Burberry trench coat for a state visit to the U.K. in September 2025. The exaggeratedly long coat worked on the former model's tall frame, lending her an aura of powerful modesty. The black sunglasses tied the look together neatly. Its simple khaki color, combined with simple black boots reminded that Melania's simple outfits can still be stunning.

Melania's suede jacket in England was so chic

While on a state visit to England in September 2025, Melania Trump joined Catherine, Princess of Wales for an excursion with the children of the Scouts Squirrels program. For the journey, Melania wore a suede, caramel-toned Ralph Lauren belted safari jacket with neutral trousers by Loro Piana. On X, people raved about the simple look. "FLOTUS's style!" tweeted one user about this particular look. "She looks fabulous, as always," another added. Someone else, referring to both Catherine and Melania, wrote: "Ralph Lauren's two muses." Even when she wears a simple coat, Melania's outerwear catches people's attention.
