9 Anne Hathaway Outfits That Would Get Andy Sachs' Stamp Of Approval
When "The Devil Wears Prada" premiered in 2006, it was an immediate hit with audiences. Based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 roman à clef of the same name about her time as Anna Wintour's assistant at Vogue, the movie introduced us to the character of Andy Sachs, based on Weisberger and played by Anne Hathaway. It also confirmed rumors that Wintour, on whom the character Miranda Priestly was based, really is the most demanding woman in the fashion world. This is a fact that Wintour was only able to admit to in 2025, telling David Remnick on "The New Yorker Radio Hour" podcast of the movie, "In the end, I thought it was a fair shot."
Although the entire cast was fantastic and the fashion was spot-on for the time, it's hard to not see Andy Sachs' style evolution as one of the most memorable parts of the film. Andy went from wearing epically unflattering frumpy work outfits à la Karoline Leavitt to jaw-dropping looks that included, of course, Chanel boots. But despite finally fitting into that world, Andy, like Weisberger did in real life, ultimately quit Runway magazine, making it appear to be the end of the story. However, as of 2025, it's clear there's another chapter at Runway for Andy.
With "The Devil Wears Prada 2" set to release on May 1, 2026, there's been renewed interest in the story and Andy Sachs. After all, who isn't chomping at the bit to see all that gorgeous fashion on screen again? Like Andy, Hathaway has had her own stunning style evolution, making it safe to say that she has rocked quite a few looks that post-makeover Andy Sachs would absolutely appreciate.
2013: Rocking Chanel in Berlin
Is Chanel approved by Andy Sachs even if it's not the Chanel boots? Of course. For the premiere of "Les Misérables" at the 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival in February 2013, Anne Hathaway wore this black and navy mini dress by Chanel. Not only was the dressed tiered and embellished, it also had a train just long enough for dramatic effect. Because Hathaway had to shave her head for the role of Fantine in the film, when it started to grow back, it immediately put Hathaway in the club of memorable celebrity pixie cuts that inspired so many super short hairdos. Talk about a trendsetter, just like Andy!
2014: Trying her hand at mixed fabrics and succeeding
While Anne Hathaway isn't usually a celeb who takes method dressing to the next level while promoting movies, she did dip her toe into those waters when making the press rounds for 2014's "Interstellar." For the New York premiere at the Lincoln Square Theater in November of that year, Hathaway wore this strange, but delightfully unique lace and sequin dress by Rodarte. The contrasting colors, uneven hemline, and overall deconstruction design is definitely serving up some intergalactic and futuristic energy — after all, maybe this what people will be wearing to movie premieres in 2067. If that's the case, then extra kudos to Hathaway.
2018: Tapping into her angelic side
When it comes to Met Galas of the last 10 years, one of the most memorable was the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination" theme from May 2018. So many people brought their A-game and among them, in this voluminous taffeta ballgown by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino, was Anne Hathaway. Not only is the dress the very definition of heavenly, it's also a perfect shade for Hathaway's winter complexion and hair color. While the dress nailed the heavenly aspect, for the Catholic imagery, Hathaway's team placed custom-made golden quills into her hair to create a beautiful halo-like look. Everything about this ensemble was celestial, to say the least.
2022: Officially becoming a fashionista
While certainly not something Andy Sachs would have worn to work, once her style evolution had completed, this is definitely something she, like Anne Hathaway here, would have worn on the Spanish Step in Rome. To the Valentino Haute Couture show in July 2022, Hathaway wore this pink sparkling mini dress with matching pink platform pumps and a matching mini bag — all by Valentino. According to Vogue Australia, this specific shade was named "Pink PP" after Valentino's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Although many celebrities rocked this color during 2022 and 2023, especially as Barbiecore started to take over, it's this particular outfit that remains a standout from that hot pink era.
2023: Making deconstructed couture look iconic
While the 2023 Met Gala's celebration of Karl Lagerfeld was nothing less than shameful due to the designer's notoriously fatphobic, racist, and sexist statements, Anne Hathaway pretty much stole the show that night. In a custom-made, white Versace gown that clearly paid homage to Chanel's signature tweed, Hathaway looked effortlessly amazing and elegant. In fact, of all the people who showed up to honor Lagerfeld, Hathaway was definitely among the best dressed and nailed the theme. The only other person who might have rivaled Hathaway that night in their outfit choice was Jared Leto who dressed up as Lagerfeld's cat, Choupette — to whom Lagerfeld left $1.6 million in his will.
2023: Keeping things sexy and chic
If ever there was an outfit that screams, "Andy Sachs has arrived," this mini dress by Versace is it. You can just see her wearing this to meet up with her boyfriend Nate, feeling all hot and sexy, just so he can tear her down. (Grow up, Nate!) Anne Hathaway wore this obscenely fun look to the Versace Fall-Winter 2023 fashion show in March 2023 and everything about it slays. It's not just the cut of the dress or the fact that it showcases Hathaway's killer long legs, but the black pointed-toe, platform boots add another level of fierceness. Hathaway completed the look with a mini handbag and black sunglasses, accessory choices that kept the focus on the dress.
2024: Proving that leather can be both sexy and sophisticated
For the April 2024 screening of her film, "The Idea of You" in New York, Anne Hathaway appears to be giving method dressing another try. In the movie she plays a single mom who ends up dating a younger man who just so happens to be in a band — and is anything more rock and roll than head-to-toe leather? Short answer: No. Granted, this outfit is by Ralph Lauren, a fashion house that tends to be fairly preppy at times, but if you ever need a winning monochromatic outfit for lazy days, as Hathaway proves here, you can't go wrong with black leather.
2024: Redefining what a villain era looks like
Apparently 2024 was Anne Hathaway's leather era and post-makeover Andy Sachs would love it. For the Versace runway show during Milan Fashion Week in February 2024, Hathaway wore this red leather dress, looking equal parts villain and vixen. Hathaway completed the outfit with ruby-red heels and a small black handbag. With her hair down and serving up hair inspo with those chic curtain bangs, Hathaway is proving that when your outfit looks this great and this unstoppable, you can easily get away with casual, slightly tousled hair that looks like you may have just rolled out of bed.
2025: Channeling 1998's Sharon Stone
In 1998, at the 70th Academy Awards, Sharon Stone wore a classic white button-up shirt from the Gap paired with a floor-length lavender skirt by Vera Wang. At the time, the look had some people clutching their pearls at such a casual top being worn to an awards ceremony the caliber of the Oscars, but here's the thing: it worked. It became an unforgettable fashion statement that has continued to influence. For the 2025 Met Gala celebrating "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," Anne Hathaway did her own take on the now-iconic outfit, pairing a button-up with a gorgeous striped skirt by Carolina Herrera. Not only does the ensemble get Andy Sach's stamp of approval, but Stone's too.
