3 Boot Color Trends You'll Be Seeing Everywhere Winter 2025 (And The Outdated Hues To Ditch)

It's time (once again) to think about the winter footwear that will help us strut out of one year and into the next. We already got some Holiday footwear inspo from Meghan Markle, who rocked a chic bow heel while rubbing shoulders with showbiz royalty at Kris Jenner's 70th birthday party in November. But, let's be honest, the flirty shoe isn't the most practical — especially if you're somewhere that gets cold, snowy, or rainy in the winter. That means embracing more practical footwear for day-to-day seasonal wear, and nothing fits the bill quite like a pair of boots.

Winter 2025 is bringing some huge boot color trend changes, and there are a few developments that might just surprise you. Like (shocker!) black not being the most on-trend hue for the season. Instead, there are a handful of others leading the cold-weather charge that will instantly upgrade even your coziest winter ensembles. And bonus, we're also lifting the lid on a few hues you should probably avoid.

In: Maroon/Burgundy

Maroon and burgundy boots are the new black. The rich, deep red hue is dark enough to go with almost any outfit, like black boots traditionally have, but it's just different enough to upgrade your winter outfits from predictable to chic and modern. Modatope's Knee High Boots in Burgundy Pu are sturdy with a chunky heel (ideal if you're rushing around during the Holidays), while the Ouepiano Cowboy Boots in Burgundy will make you twice as trendy and simultaneously hit the mark for the season's '70s-inspired boot trend.

Out: Black

While it's true that black never really goes out of style (especially in boots), we'd still suggest skipping it if you can for winter 2025. Though black boots can be super versatile as the weather turns colder, the color feels basic compared to the modern flair of the other shades dominating winter 2025. If you really can't tear yourself away from black, though (we get it), grab a pair that features another color to keep them exciting. Tommy Hilfiger's Shano-WC boot in Black/Tan or Marc Fisher Women's Jelanie Ankle Boot in Cognac/Black both mix black and brown.

In: Chocolate brown

Though we've seen more colorful boot trends in recent years, dark brown will dominate winter 2025. Chocolate brown was everywhere in fall, so it's no surprise the rich tone is following us into the end of the year and the start of a new one via boots. SHIBEVER Chelsea Boots in Dark Brown are a practical way to be on trend (particularly if your winter comes with inclement weather) due to their low, chunky heel, while the Brown Knee High Boots from Cervigado Store offer more structure and sophistication.

Out: Bright pink

Bright and hot pinks have continued to fall out of fashion since that legendary Barbie obsession of summer 2023, and the bold shades were exclusively declared outdated for spring 2025 by fashion stylist and lifestyle expert Joseph Kat. And there's more bad news for pink-lovers who like to make a statement, because that's not changing for winter 2025. Instead, light pinks are making a comeback, but the hue isn't the most practical for boots, so we'd recommend keeping the pale shade strictly on your clothing.

In: Brown suede

If you love a blazer and jeans look but want to give it a 2025 upgrade for winter, look no further than a brown suede boot. It's the perfect shoe to make the classic ensemble cold-weather-proof and isn't a far cry from Mocha Mousse (aka Pantone's 2025 Color of the Year). The Suede Knee High Boots in Brown from MICIFA can be worn under or over slim jeans, while the Marc Fisher Matter Bootie in Brown Suede is ideal if you're looking for an ankle boot that can work with a range of denim styles.

Out: Bright (aka Brat) green

Bright green had a major fashion resurgence in 2024 when Charli XCX adopted the hue for her "Brat" era. But even the singer herself has declared the brash aesthetic over. "Goodbye forever brat summer," she tweeted last year. And she's not the only one declaring the eye-catching hue outdated. "This ultra-bright green has had a solid run," Courtney Fisher, fashion influencer marketing expert at GRIN, told us earlier this year while breaking down summer's outdated and trendy tones.
