Kristen Bell's Natural Hair Color Is Made For The Beach
Kristen Bell has sported a bright shade of blonde throughout projects like "Veronica Mars" and "The Good Place," but the Hollywood figure's natural shade is one we'd love to take to the beach. The Michigan native revealed in 2021 that she was ready to leave her signature lightened tone behind, opting instead for a stylized version of her natural hue. "My roots are like a very dirty blonde, and I am loving it," she told Allure. "I don't foresee going back to bright blonde. I think I'm going to, for a while, stick with my au naturel dirty, dirty, dirty blonde light brown."
Bell's return to her natural hair color, which ranks among celebrity shades of blonde to take to the salon, was inspired by the hairstyling for the miniseries "The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window." The satirical thriller, which debuted on Netflix in 2022, saw the star in a darkened bob with choppy fringe. "I put a bang piece on, and I took my hair pretty much to its absolute natural color," she explained.
Bell was still embracing her light brown locks by March 2025, sharing with People that she was letting her children's naturally pale shade shine in place of her old dye job. "I still get a few highlights, but it's pretty much my natural color now, and I love it," she said, adding that her hair health has majorly improved. As seen in an Instagram post from celebrity hairstylist Matthew Collins, the ashy hair color paired with tousled waves makes for the ultimate beach-ready look.
This isn't the only time Kristen has mixed up her hair color
While Kristen Bell is most associated with the bright blonde tone that has dominated the majority of her career, the "Nobody Wants This" star's color experiments have gone beyond the return to her natural dirty blonde color. She revealed to Allure that she briefly tried out a shade of red for the beloved mystery series "Veronica Mars," but that the change was ultimately short-lived. "We all hated it, so there's, like, two episodes where I'm fully wearing a kerchief," she said.
One of Bell's most head-turning transformations comes from "Burlesque," with the star appearing as Nikki, a talented dancer who rivals Christina Aguilera's leading character, Ali. The Michigan native donned a brunette wig for the 2010 musical, contrasting her typical bright tone with the dark and moody hue. "I'm a big fan of the transformation," she told Parade. "I'm tired of sort of looking the way that I look all the time, so to put on a wig or a crazy amount of makeup was really invigorating."
Lastly, regardless of the debunked red flags in Bell's relationship with Dax Shepard, the celebrity couple looked super cute with matching, purple-accented hair. The two seemingly added temporary color dye for a trip to Austria back in 2022, with additional social media snapshots showing the duo's hair quickly fading from the vibrant purple in subsequent days. While we loved seeing Bell try something new with the unexpected dip dye, we have to admit that her beach-ready dirty blonde remains our favorite look from the star.
