Engagement Ring Styles That May Cause More Trouble Than They're Worth

When it's time to choose an engagement ring, there's nothing more fun than oohing and aahing at all the pretty stones and settings. You may draw inspiration from the royals' gorgeous engagement rings, or perhaps you already have your dream design picked out. Before you start shopping, however, keep in mind that some styles aren't really that practical for everyday wear. According to a jewelry designer on TikTok, tension rings are one of the ones to avoid. This setting features a stone held together by two bands, which have no prongs. "Over time, with normal wear and tear, if any of those metals become loose, your stone is gone," she warned. Another setting you should think twice about is a high-set stone. "Settings like this get caught on everything. Way easier to knock them against doors or desks. We get a lot of customers that actually regret getting high-set rings despite the fact that they really like the look," the expert shared.

As for comfort, engagement ring retailer Bijou Lab suggested staying away from pavé settings. "They will feel rough between your fingers, and if you're sensitive to textures, it is not a good style for you," founder Michelle Keller stated on TikTok. What she suggested was choosing a plain, rounded band instead. You may be tempted to follow certain trends, but to avoid having to redesign your ring in a few years, stick with one with a timeless feel.

Trendy designs may have you regretting your engagement ring choice

Like with fashion, there are outdated jewelry trends you won't want to be caught wearing, and since an engagement ring is forever, it's best to choose a classic style. Ring designer Dominique Flux shared on YouTube, "Things are constantly changing, so in five years it's going to be completely different ... that's why my number one tip as a jeweler that I give to clients is always go for a more classic, more minimal engagement ring." If you do want something trendy, Flux's advice is to play around with your wedding band instead, as it's less expensive to replace than an engagement ring. And, if you're set on putting your own stamp on things, like the unique cut of Taylor Swift's engagement ring, Flux is all for going super unconventional, as it's a reflection of your personality.

Since you'll likely be wearing your engagement ring around the clock, it's also important to think about your day-to-day life. If you have a job that requires frequent hand-washing or gloves, a minimal design with a low profile will be best. The same with athletes — you don't want a chunky stone getting in the way that you'll constantly have to adjust. Picking out engagement rings is about more than just loving the design, which, of course, is top priority. But comfort and durability are key as well, and ultimately, it has to feel as good as it looks.
