Valerie Bertinelli Has Worn Some Questionable Outfits Over The Years
The longer a star is in the spotlight, the more chance they have of committing a fashion faux pas. Just ask Valerie Bertinelli. The "Hot In Cleveland" star has been on our screens and in magazine columns since the 1970s, which means she's made more public appearances and walked more red carpets than we can count. She's also seen countless fads come and go, including the once popular fashion trends of the '70s and the even more divisive clothing and beauty choices of the '80s.
But while Bertinelli has proven herself to be a fashionable star with some stylish ensembles in her past (she even once had her own fashion line), the Delaware native has still followed some trends that proved not to be winners. The actor has also fallen victim to a handful of dubious fabrics and silhouettes that weren't the most flattering, including at least one piece that were downright crumpled. And those missteps have resulted in a handful of outfits that were questionable at best.
Valerie Bertinelli's pants were way too long at the Ratatouille premiere
When Valerie Bertinelli stepped out for the "Ratatouille" premiere in 2007, we noticed a couple of issues with her all-black outfit. Firstly, her wide-leg pants were so long that they created a trip hazard. The hems skimmed across the red carpet, totally hiding her shoes. Secondly, though we appreciated that Bertinelli mixed fabrics to stop her monochrome ensemble from looking too drab, the complete lack of color (aside from a little on her bag) was a missed opportunity to bring some fun and vibrancy to a Disney event.
Her oversized blazer and pants swamped her figure
Valerie Bertinelli sported all-black attire again for a Celebration Theatre benefit in 2013, but, again, it wasn't her best. The oversized pieces swamped her figure, the super-long sleeves almost covered her hands, and the too-long pants hid her shoes. Equally, similar to the "One Day at a Time" star's "Ratatouille" aesthetic, the piece felt too drab and corporate for a celebratory event. Much like a pop of brown can revolutionize an LBD, a brown belt would have elevated this look without being over the top.
She combined too many aesthetics in her confused '80s look
There was some interesting fashion around in the 1980s, and Valerie Bertinelli showed us why not all of it was good. The young star mixed too many aesthetics when she wore a sophisticated navy velvet blazer over casual shiny black leggings with Chuck Taylors and thick long red socks. She added several strands of pearls and a single leather-look glove. Even Bertinelli couldn't defend the confused look (complete with a highlighted, shag haircut), as she joked on Instagram in 2023, "Fit check! One glove tho," with a crying laughing emoji.
Valerie Bertinelli made another '80s fashion mistake involving a yellow crop top and floral leggings
That wasn't the only 1980s 'fit that came back to haunt Valerie Bertinelli as, in 2016, she poked fun at herself via a throwback photoshoot shared on Facebook. She wore a yellow, off-shoulder crop top with a matching, sheer scarf, plus floral leggings, a grungy, chunky belt, and a leather-look jacket draped around her elbows. There was no cohesion between the pieces, and each loud garment was fighting for attention. The actor admitted it wasn't her best, writing: "Can't even explain my outfit. SO. EIGHTIES."
Valerie Bertinelli's 2022 Grammys look wasn't red carpet appropriate
Valerie Bertinelli made it a family affair at the 2022 Grammys, but her outfit wasn't red carpet appropriate. She wore a long black blazer over black pants and a black top, accessorizing with a black-and-white polka dot scarf. But the ensemble was too casual for such a prestigious red carpet. Her daughter-in-law, Andraia Allsop, wore a formal, embellished pink gown that was far more Grammy-esque, which only made Bertinelli look more underdressed. Underdressing is a fashion turn-off, as it gives the impression you don't care about the event you're attending.
Her pink and black top didn't create the most flattering silhouette
In 2015, Valerie Bertinelli shared a sweet Facebook snap showing herself posing with her "Hot In Cleveland" co-stars Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick after the trio turned up to work wearing similar colors. But, as much as we loved the unplanned coordination, Bertinelli's black and pink outfit wasn't her most flattering. Her baggy top with an uneven hemline added bulk to her figure instead of highlighting her gorgeous silhouette. Had the stripey top been a little more fitted, it would have been a lot more complementary.
She brought outdoors inside in a coat that clashed with her co-stars' ensembles
Valerie Bertinelli endured another fashion faux pas involving her "Hot In Cleveland" co-stars in 2014. The now former co-workers posed together at SiriusXM Studios, but Bertinelli looked dressed for a totally different event — and season — to her co-stars. While Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick gave us chic early spring vibes (it was March), the "Touched by an Angel" actor was better dressed for a winter's day outside in her long, double-breasted, black coat and sensible, black boots.
Valerie Bertinelli's white overalls were seriously crumpled
Though we appreciated Valerie Bertinelli wearing something other than black at The Food and Wine Classic event in 2024, her all-white ensemble needed a little more attention to be suitable for a big event. She wore overalls over a T-shirt while posing with Ross Matthews and Carolyn Murray, but the material appeared thin and didn't hold its shape, so it looked crumpled and creased. A waist belt could also have upgraded the look, as it would have highlighted her curves and created a more complementary and cleaner silhouette.
