The Unique Cut Of Taylor Swift's Engagement Ring, Explained

When Taylor Swift revealed the stunning 8-carat engagement ring that her now-fiancé, Travis Kelce, used to pop the question, fans were delighted at how perfectly suited the piece was for the "Love Story" singer. "It has a vintage vibe to it, it feels very her," noted one Reddit commenter. Part of what gives the ring that old-fashioned, fairy tale feeling that so perfectly suits Swift is the unique Old Mine Cut of the diamond.

This style of diamond, recognizable by its high crown and large facets, was particularly popular between the late 1600s to early 1900s. "Unlike modern, machine-cut stones, these diamonds were crafted by eye, giving them imperfect symmetry and a small table that creates a soft, romantic glow, especially under candlelight," says Mike Fried, CEO of The Diamond Pro, in an exclusive interview with Women. "Today, these diamonds are prized for their vintage charm and warm sparkle." For Swift, whose aesthetic often feels whimsical and old-fashioned, the soft glitter is the perfect effect. "What sets [Old Mine Cuts] apart is their uneven and less symmetrical arrangement, giving them a unique, 'softer' sparkle compared to the brilliance of modern cuts," says Fried.

Another characteristic of the Old Mine Cut that makes it perfect for Swift? They traditionally feature 58 facets. "5+8=13 👀," noted one commenter on r/Taylor Swift. Thirteen is, of course, Swift's lucky number and a regularly recurring motif in her work, so it appears Kelce knows her well. That's just more proof that Swift and Kelce have a winning relationship.

Travis Kelce was all-in on designing Taylor Swift's ring

The ring was crafted by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine, who specializes in hand engraving. Finely detailed designs were added, along with two small "T"s, to the band of the ring. But it appears Travis Kelce had a major hand in the ring's design, commissioning a project that perfectly suits the singer. These upcoming nuptials are the closest thing America will have to a royal wedding, so it's only appropriate that the ring could easily hold its own against any of the British Royals' gorgeous engagement rings.

With the ring valued between $550,000 and $1 million, it's definitely an investment, so it makes sense that Kelce went the extra mile to get it right. The process of designing the ring likely included selecting both the design and the individual gem. With a bespoke ring, "the customer gets to feel that their ring is a real reflection of who they are and who they're marrying," said Nicole Wegman, founder and CEO of Ring Concierge, in an interview with Vogue.

While the ring may set off a resurgence for similar old-fashioned designs — the dress Taylor Swift wore for the proposal reportedly sold out within an hour, after all — vintage-inspired rings have already been on the rise in recent years. "Swift's engagement will undoubtedly catapult this trend even further," said jeweler Susie Saltzman in an interview with Vogue. "Collectors and brides alike are seeking diamonds with history, charm, and individuality—qualities this ring exudes." His selection proves that Kelce knows his intended well, and the pop star was right to hold out for a partner who understands and celebrates her; call it just one more love lesson we've learned from Swift.
