The Glaring Sign Nicole Kidman's 2025 Cannes Film Festival Wig Wasn't A Good Fit

While Nicole Kidman's naturally curly hair is gorgeous, the award-winning actor has garnered a reputation for sporting less than beautiful wigs for her movie and TV roles. The star's unconvincing and badly-styled onscreen hair-pieces have been fodder for internet jokes, but some fans have also speculated that the Australian-born actor wears faux-hair during her red carpet appearances. A recent mishap at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival seems to give credence to this theory, with pieces of Kidman's real hair being a slightly different shade than the overlaid hair-piece.

The "Babygirl" star wore a stunning Balenciaga gown to a Kering-hosted dinner at the festival, accepting the 2025 Women in Motion award and reiterating her commitment to combating gender inequality in the film industry. The floor-length gown was made with illusion lace of a bright red color, with Kidman styling her strawberry-toned tresses straight around her shoulder. Some snapshots from the night highlight a slight color difference in the pieces of hair framing her face, with the grey-toned blond strands not blending seamlessly with the rest of the 'do. While we loved the look otherwise, this color mismatch is a clear sign this wasn't the right wig for Kidman.

Kidman's wigged look contrasts her Met Gala chop

While Nicole Kidman has some solid reasons to wear wigs, the award-winning actor's decision to wear a hair piece at the festival was likely due to the chopped look she sported for the 2025 Met Gala. At the May event, the star wore a custom, strapless Balenciaga gown, ranking among the Met Gala attendees who proved that style only gets better as you age, and sported a short, mostly-slicked-back hairdo with wavy bangs and dark roots. Instead of opting for a wig, celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel confirmed that Kidman had committed to the length.

"This new cut on Nicole was all about tailoring the right proportions," he said in a press release obtained by Byrdie. "The cascading bang brought a feminine element while keeping a masculine shape around the sides and back of the head." The short style was in honor of the gala's "Tailored For You" dress code, which was inspired by the museum's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" exhibit. In addition to serving as a great addition to her Met Gala look, Kidman's new cut made a wig necessary for the long-haired look she sported at Cannes. We don't fault the star for using faux-hair to experiment with different styles or to accentuate her natural locks, but we do hope her team can get the color-matching correct next time.
