Kristen Stewart Outfits That Completely Missed The Mark

Once hailed as the brooding queen of cool, Kristen Stewart has walked down red carpets and photo calls with the swagger of someone who could wear a paper bag and still spark a think piece. But even alt-punk royalty slips now and then — into a mismatched pump, an oddly tailored blazer, or what can only be described as fashion's answer to a cryptic crossword puzzle.

Yes, Stewart has given us plenty of iconic style moments leaning into the indie sleaze trend ... but she's also delivered outfits that left stylists blinking into the abyss. We're not here to revoke her fashion crown, just to lovingly examine those times when Stewart's closet served chaos instead of couture. From Chanel misfires to red carpet rebellions, Stewart has been on a style journey with some outfits that really missed the mark.

An optical illusion

Kristen Stewart is known for her rebellious, androgynous edge — and when it works, it really works. But in this look she wore to the InStyle Imagemaker Awards in 2024, it feels like the Chanel train took a wrong turn at "effortless chic" and derailed into "conflicted sleepwear."

The fabric, a classic Chanel-style tweed, is heavy and feels too mature for the unbuttoned style. Plus, Stewart's usual punk energy gets lost in the bulky old-school texture. And pairing the structured tweed suit with a minimal black bra had the potential to be edgy, but without better tailoring or contrast, it ends up feeling like she forgot her blouse mid-commute. In addition to the pattern, the jacket appears too boxy and stiff, while the pants are oddly bunched at the ankle, making the overall silhouette look unfinished.

Sequin overload

This bold pink gown Kristen Stewart wore to the 76th Venice Film Festival in August 2019 was clearly meant to be a high-glam moment, but unfortunately, it landed with more of a glare than a glow. There is shimmer, and then there is the sequin suffocation.

This dress is drenched in pink metallics from neck to hem with no break in texture or tone, and without this variation, it becomes visually exhausting. And unfortunately, the high neckline, long sleeves and heavy fabric create a top-heavy effect, while the drop waist flattens Stewart's figure instead of defining it.

Then you have that severe smoky eye and platinum hair that scream rocker-chic — one of the more notable moments in Stewart's dramatic hair transformation. When paired with a bubblegum-pink glitter gown, though, it creates a disconnect that makes it feel like two different characters showed up to the red carpet.

Corset confusion

In 2019, Stewart graced the red carpet of the "Charlie's Angels" premiere in a black and white, plaid-adjacent dress. This look had potential, like it wants to be a punk-meets-pinup moment. But instead of serving Kristen Stewart's signature edge with polish, it lands somewhere between confused corsetry and a fashion school final project.

The combination of grid patterns and sparkles competes for attention, and your eyes do not know where to land. The exaggerated hip padding also creates a very dramatic silhouette that is not flattering. It distorts Stewart's proportions, giving an almost cartoonish hourglass effect. Finally, the "Twilight" star's layered chain necklaces would have worked with a sleeker or more minimal look, but paired with this dress, it creates visual noise.

Too much sheer, too little structure

Kristen Stewart received the coveted American Riviera Award, which honors outstanding achievement in film, wearing a dress that serves "Black Swan" fever dream. The sheer black material running from collar to toe is less daring and more like a bad fashion dare, leaving Stewart looking boxed in mesh.

Stewart was far from nailing the sheer dress trend: The frothy, color-blocked tulle resembled a dismantled loofah and instead of creating volume or whimsy, and it cut her body at the worst point. Stewart is known for pulling off bold, unconventional looks, but even she cannot sell a dress that feels like several runway concepts collided without a unifying vision.

Oops, no pants

Time to address the high-waisted brief in the room. Kristen Stewart thought it was a good idea to walk around in underwear and an open button-up in New York ... in March. Unless it was an unusually warm day, she had to be freezing! While a great example of the controversial pantless trend, we're not a fan of this look.

The cropped button-up would be kind of cute if she were wearing pants. In this context, it feels like she dressed the top half for brunch and the bottom half for a poolside cabana. The sleek burgundy heels and structured handbag clash wildly with the rest of the look. The disconnect in styling is too out there to feel intentional or editorial. This outfit is a perfect example of how easily celebrities can experience fashion glow-downs.
