Lupita Nyong'o Brings Back Outdated 2010s Eyebrow Trend At The 2025 Met Gala

Lupita Nyong'o stepped out for the 2025 Met Gala in a gorgeous light blue, Chanel suit with a sheer cape and structured hat. But, as stunning and elegant as her outfit was, we couldn't stop staring at her brows. The "12 Years A Slave" star brought back the long outdated 2010s bedazzled eyebrow trend, as she applied black rhinestones to her arches. The look was very reminiscent of 2010s festival makeup and put a unique spin on the event's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." It also elevated her aesthetic by adding extra fun and whimsy to her sophisticated 'fit.

We weren't the only ones who couldn't get enough of her unexpected sparkle, either. "I'm going to be thinking about Lupita's brows for a while," one X, formerly known as Twitter, user wrote. Another commented on the social media site, "Love what Lupita did with her brows. I'm always pro bedazzling."

The bling brow look was huge in the mid-2010s, when beauty gurus were sticking big, small (and everything in between) gems to their eyebrows. Benefit even launched a Bling Brow kit to get the out-there aesthetic. Though the trend has subsided since to make way for the likes of the bushy brow trend and summer 2024's go-to feathered eyebrows, Nyong'o's not the only one who's attempted to revive rhinestones. Cardi B also made a case for its return when she sported a single line of silver gems as eyebrows in her 2024 "Like What (Freestyle)" music video.

Lupita Nyong'o's bedazzled brows were the expert work of makeup artist Nick Barose, who shared his beauty notes on Instagram. He wrote of the "Us" actor's beauty look, "Glowing, radiant skin with iridescent bronze tones on cheeks and lips, with rockstar eyes and embellished, bejeweled brows." Though he didn't reveal the exact rhinestones he applied, he confirmed her jaw dropping eye look was created using Chanel makeup, including the Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in 01 Noir Black, Stylo Ombre et Contour in 08 Rouge Noir, and Inimitable Mascara Intense. Her makeup perfectly lent itself to the added sparkle, as Barose ensured the cosmetics blended seamlessly with her flawless, dewy skin, allowing the brows and eyes to be the focus without being too costume-y.

Barose also gave some advice to those looking to attempt Nyong'o's eye-catching look. "Create strong brow shapes then apply various tones [of] jewels over it for extra drama and sparkles," he wrote. A strong brow shape means avoiding common eyebrow mistakes, such as overplucking or creating a shape that's too thin. It's also important to use gems with medical-grade adhesive already attached, such as NOOEPC Face Gems or Psyqtsuary's Self Adhesive Face Gem Stickers, as you're less likely to experience skin irritation. For a sophisticated, less bold vibe, apply gems in shades that match the brow hairs, like Barose did for Nyong'o. For something more fun and youthful though, use a range of sizes and colors for a unique, rainbow look that's perfect for attending a festival or a night on the town.
