Princess Diana's '90s Bixie Is The Sophisticated Short Hairstyle Of Our Dreams

Although Princess Diana will forever be remembered for her altruism, her style remains unforgettable. Whether it's her long list of iconic royal rule-breaking outfits or her haircuts that were always on the shorter side, Princess Di will always be remembered for her timeless sophistication. One of those haircuts that Diana mastered so perfectly was the bixie.

Part bob and part pixie, the bixie was all the rage in the 1990s. "This hairstyle is having a major comeback due to its effortless style mixed with sophistication, which makes it ideal for any occasion and more importantly can suit any age," fashion, red carpet hair, and make-up artist, Luna Viola, exclusively tells Women. According to Viola, it's versatility that makes the bixie so great. "It can be wispier and more feathered around the face for a youthful carefree look or fuller and styled behind the ears for a more demure classy approach," says Viola. "The variations are endless." Not only that, but it works on every hair texture — as long as you have the right products. "Use dry wax or smoothing balm with any hair texture to highlight the feathering layers or sleek the hair slightly back, if you want to spicy it up, add a light wave to it for movement," says Viola, adding that taming products are key for this cut.

Whether you're trying to find the perfect short haircut to try out the look or you're growing out your pixie, the bixie is always a fun option. Also, in being Princess Diana-approved, it will never go out of style.

Go for the classic bixie

While the bixie can come in many forms, if you have straight hair, then going for the bixie cut Princess Di had in the 1990s is the best option. You're keeping it simple, yet classic. It's not that you're playing it safe by choosing this variation of the bixie, it's simply that you know a good thing when you see it and you don't feel it needs a lot of frills to make a statement — because it doesn't.

Slick your bixie into place

As hairstylist Luna Viola exclusively tells Women, if your hair already has a bit of texture — meaning it's wavy, curly, coiled, etc. — then you need products to make sure your bixie cut falls into place. "A little bit of taming product with a natural finish is the key to this manageable and chic trending style," says Viola. This will also allow you to play around with what will ultimately be your final look before leaving the house.

Let your curly bixie go a bit wild

If your curls are loose and more free-flowing as opposed to tightly curled, then you can go easy on the product. After all, you don't want to weigh down curls that have a perfect bounce. If you've had a pixie with curly hair, then you already know that in the growing-out process, nothing works better than rolling into a bixie, before either evolving into a bob or heading back to your pixie cut.

Give your bixie some heavy '70's vibes

If you want your bixie to have more of a '70s vibe as opposed to the '90s, then you want to make sure your 'do has a lot of layers. You're basically giving your bixie a makeover that leans very much toward the shag cut. Bixies aren't going anywhere anytime soon and neither are shags, and combining the two is a perfect way to always be on trend.

Try a bixie with curtain bangs

We've seen a lot of curtain bangs lately and for good reason: they're a low-maintenance bang style so you don't have to mess with them, unlike other bangs that need hairdryers and curling irons. Curtain bangs also look great with a bixie, adding a more free feeling to the cut, as opposed to something rigid that requires a lot of work.
