According to a 2023 study published in Personality and Individual Differences, "agreeableness, openness, and extraversion" are the personality traits that tend to make someone better suited for online dating. As the research found, not only are these characteristics appealing to others, but daters also look for those who have the same level of these traits as they have. So while, yes, your looks may be the reason someone lingers on your profile (and you linger on theirs), there's something about these qualities that ultimately makes you swipe right.
Naturally, when we talk about personalities, it's impossible not to consider zodiac signs. If each sign plays a role in how someone acts and reacts, then of course the signs will also have a say in whether or not someone knows their way around the online dating world. Like anything, some signs are amazing when it comes to apps, while others should probably stick to meeting people to date IRL. If your dating app game hasn't been going so well, it might not be your fault after all. Like having a bad day during Mercury retrograde, it might be the result of the stars.
Leo (July 23 to August 22)
As the lion of the zodiac, Leo is bold and courageous. From the get-go, their mindset is that the world is their oyster and anyone and everyone would be lucky to have them in their life. "Leos are ruled by the Sun making them consciously confident, and will light up the room when they arrive," transformational astrologer Corina Crysler told Well + Good. It's this confidence, which some would label as cockiness, that makes Leo the best of the best when it comes to mastering online dating. In fact, Leo is such a smooth operator, that they're the most matched of the zodiac.
"Leos often are the most easygoing, and the most social naturally, and kind, warm, and giving, and charismatic, so it makes total sense to me that they get the most matches," Astrologer Kathleen Medina told USA Today. From peacocking in their profile to being fearless enough to not only send the first message, but ask someone out on that initial date, dating apps were practically made for Leo. They know what to say, how to say it, and how to wield their charisma and bravado in a way that makes them truly irresistible.
Cancer (June 21 to July 22)
When it comes to signs that are true romantics, Cancer is right up there. Overflowing with sensitivity, emotion, and the need to nurture, Cancer believes so deeply in making connections, that despite not being super confident, they're quite successful on dating apps because they believe in taking chances. In the name of love, of course.
"Their profiles are like an emotional rollercoaster ride, taking you on a journey through the depths of their hearts," astrologist Michelle Bell told Bustle. "You'll find heartwarming descriptions of their passions, dreams, and desires, wrapped in a tender embrace of vulnerability." But it's not only the words they choose for their profile that evoke emotion and make the rest of us feel warm and fuzzy inside, they're photos, too, can have an intoxicating effect. "You might find them cuddling with their adorable pets, surrounded by loved ones, or simply basking in the beauty of nature. Cancers know how to evoke emotions through imagery, making you feel an instant connection to their world," said Bell. Poetry and cute puppies are hard to resist in a sea of gym selfies and bad song lyrics.
Virgo (August 23 to September 22)
If you've found yourself swiping and come across a shockingly perfect profile, as if someone spent hours on the details, word choices, and photos, then it was probably a Virgo. As the perfectionists of the zodiac, Virgo has done their research when it comes to crafting a dating profile. Unlike other signs that wing it or rely on their photos or brazenness to be good at the online dating game, Virgo has read articles, studies, and analyzed their trials and errors to get their profile where it is. Because of this, it's impossible for them to not get a dizzying amount of right swipes.
But while they certainly crush it on dating apps, in real life, it's another story. "Virgo is a perfectionist and is well-organized by nature, but they can be critical over-thinkers who expect excellence from everyone," astrologer Emily Newman told Well + Good. If Virgo could open their mind to the possibility of dating someone with a flaw or two, they'd probably have the highest app-to-IRL relationship success rate. However, their nit-picking keeps their dating accomplishments mostly online — but with a dating profile strategy from which we can all learn.
Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)
Scorpios are well aware of what the rest of the zodiac thinks of them and not only do they embrace it, but they use it to their advantage. It's that devil-may-care attitude combined with mystery and intensity that makes Scorpio desirable both online and in real life. In fact, in 2019, dating app Happn revealed that according to their 60 million users worldwide, Scorpio was the most "crushed" on sign, per Business Insider. So while other signs may be masters at online dating because of their personality, Scorpio is a master just because they're Scorpio. It also helps that they're considered the sexiest of the zodiac and the most difficult to win over, per Women's Health. Who doesn't love a sexy challenge?
"Scorpios have a bad rap because some of their expressed qualities are taboo, like jealousy or having a high sex drive," astrologer Emily Heather told Hello Giggles. "These are universal things, but Scorpio gets the rap because they express some of what is beneath the surface." Thanks to their bad reputation, Scorpio doesn't have to go to great lengths trying to impress fellow daters. They need to drop their sun sign in their profile and just be.
Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)
Of all the signs, Aquarius is the most laid back, as well as the resident eccentric. Being friends with or dating an Aquarius is like interacting with a Xanax pill that marches to the beat of its own drummer. "They're quite quirky and can be a little bit unpredictable," astrologer Natha Campanella told Well + Good. "They're definitely eccentric and have a different way about them."
It's their quirkiness and "go with the flow" mentality that are assets in their online dating journey. While others stress themselves out over creating their dating profile, Aquarius puts in minimum effort, lets their eccentricity shine, and sits back while the matches just pour in — either from fellow weirdos or people who want to add a bit of strangeness to their life. "In Aquarius' world, it is more valuable to be different rather than to blend in with the crowd," astrologer and energy healer Kesaine Walker told US Today. It's a real strength, especially online, when you're not afraid to let your freak flag fly and you don't worry about what others may think.
Although these five signs may have the easiest time on dating apps, it doesn't mean everyone else should give up. If we consider cusps, rising and descending signs, location, and time of birth, those could contribute to dating app success too. Nothing in life can be determined by one part of who we are, nor should we want it to be that way.
