Love it or loathe it, it's officially boots season. Winter is almost upon us, and if you're an older woman looking to prioritize comfort and style, there are several boot trends you should focus on to see you finish off the year and ring in the new one. To find out which styles are hot and which we should leave out in the cold, Women exclusively spoke with Cynthia Kennedy, personal stylist, image consultant, and creator of Your Style Transformation Academy. Asked how 2026 boot trends differ from 2025, she tells Women, "2026 is not so much about the invention of new categories as it is about putting a fresh spin on what we already know and like. The overall approach is sleeker, more refined."

Kennedy also explains that more streamlined, sophisticated boots are in for winter 2026/2027, following the rise in chunkier styles from the past few years. "The best part about these updated classics is that they're modern and chic without being too trendy or overdone. They can go from a casual daytime look to something more polished," she adds. From sock boots to western styles, these are the boots to have your eye on as we head into the coldest months of the year.

Western boots are more refined for winter 2026/2027

Though cowboy boots have reigned supreme for several seasons now (they were one of fall 2023's hottest boot trends and have barely let up since), we're seeing a different take on this western staple for winter 2026/2027. Cynthia Kennedy tells Women to expect a more sophisticated version to take over, so think simpler vibes (less rhinestones and embellishments) and thicker, sturdier heels. "Try them with a feminine flowy dress and a jacket with some structure for an unexpected twist. The mix of rugged and romantic is what makes this so fun," Kennedy says.

She also tells us that burgundy, wine, and chocolate brown shades are hot for winter, so investing in these shades will ensure your boots are on trend. HISEA's Rollda Cowboy Boots in red are ideal for the season, as are Wetkiss' Cowboy Boots for Women in dark brown. This style is a solid choice for older women because they don't have any laces, making them easy to slip on and off if you struggle to bend down to tie them. Equally, the traditionally low heel can subtly push your body weight forward to ensure there's less strain on your hips and lower back.

Sock boots are cleaning up our silhouettes

Tapping into a winter 2025/2026 boot trend, sock boots are back. "These are great because they offer a clean line and silhouette that hugs the legs and ankles, almost like a second skin," Cynthia Kennedy says exclusively. That's good news for those who prefer a more refined look, because they're one of the few boot styles that don't add bulk. They're particularly perfect for senior women because they're lightweight, ultimately making them easier to walk in. Equally, their shape makes them super versatile. They look just as good under wide-leg pants as they do over tights, making them a solid option for older women who want their boots to take them from running errands to dinner with the grandkids.

As for how to style them, Kennedy says, "I really love styling them with a monochromatic look so the boots are the same color as the rest of the outfit." She adds, "It's an easy styling trick to get a long, unbroken line that looks really polished." Black sock boots with black pants or tights and a skirt will make for an easy matching look, but there are plenty of hot, more daring colors to try if you want to have more fun with your winter wardrobe. Cobalt blue is trending, so why not pair Risdoada's Ankle Boots in blue with some blue tights? Or go the chocolate brown route via MIA's Torstin Knit Sock Ankle Boots in chocolate with a brown monochrome 'fit?

Slouchy boots offer plenty of comfort in the colder months

On the opposite end of the spectrum are slouchy boots; that's right, one of the most comfortable boot trends for fall 2026 is a major winter trend, too. This style is exactly as it sounds, as it refers to boots with a looser look and fit, perfect for older women looking to prioritize warmth and comfort. "The relaxed and easy shape of a slouchy boot adds softness and allows for movement, while the wider shaft is a good alternative for those who struggle with fitted calf-high boots," says Cynthia Kennedy, exclusively.

"I think they're so pretty in a rich chocolate or burgundy suede, worn with a midi skirt, a sweater dress or slim pants," Kennedy adds. "The contrast between the relaxed boots with pieces that are more tailored creates a beautiful balance," she says. One of the biggest benefits of slouchy boots for older women is their roominess and comfort, perfect for thick compression socks or adding in an extra insole. So, we suggest reaching for a flat or low-heeled pair, as to not hinder their practicality. Kennedy tells us suede is one of the trendiest materials this winter, and the Modatope Slouchy Flat Rounded Toe Ruched Knee High Boots will keep you looking trendy. There's also the Olivia K Low Heel Slouch Suede Slip On Ankle Boots, which claim to be easy to slide on and off.

Mix calf hair with animal print to be on trend this season

Cynthia Kennedy exclusively shares with Women that calf hair boots in animal prints will be hugely fashionable for winter 2026/2027. "Leopard, zebra, or deer in a fine calf-hair texture is a great way of injecting some personality into your wardrobe, and can do wonders for a simple outfit," says Kennedy. Try the Aquatalia Domani boot or the ARIAT Bandida Western Boot, which will inject plenty of spice into your looks during the colder months via their leopard print.

Don't feel nervous about adding these boots to your wardrobe, either, because Kennedy has some solid advice for avoiding an animal print disaster. "Consider animal prints like neutrals but don't be afraid to mix them with olive, burgundy, or even shades of blue. That's when an outfit really comes to life!" she says. These prints are ideal for older women because they're an easy yet bold and fun upgrade that can prevent your outfit from feeling too bland or frumpy.

Minimalist flat boots are perfect for the busy season

If you're looking for something more understated than animal print, then flat, minimalist boots are for you. "The minimalism and the lines of these boots have an understated elegance which is very versatile," Cynthia Kennedy says exclusively. "I like this trend because sometimes, the most simple styles can have the biggest impact," she adds. This trend is so easy to rock because, by keeping your boots as understated as possible, they're more likely to work with almost any outfit throughout the winter. That's sure to be music to the ears of older women with limited closet space, especially those who want comfortable, practical boots for when they're being pulled in different directions.

There's never been a better time to invest in simple, ultra-versatile black boots like the QIY Store's Square Toe Low Heel Ankle Boots. But there are ways to have more fun while keeping things simple too. If you want footwear that's a little more exciting but still adheres to this understated trend, try the Modatope Low Heel Rounded Toe Ankle Boots in burgundy, which are still super practical but also tap into one of the season's hottest colors. When it comes to styling, Kennedy says, "A long coat, some cropped wide-leg trousers or a knit set in matching tones will look beautiful for that quiet-luxury style." She adds, "It goes to show that you don't need a heel or any embellishments to look sophisticated."
