Love Or Hate Her '80s Shoe Styles, Jennifer Lopez Always Stays Ahead Of Trends

Jennifer Lopez has jumped on a pretty bizarre shoe trend, but make no mistake, the "Jenny from the Block" singer is always two steps ahead of the game when it comes to rocking the latest fashion.

During a June 2026 promo run for the Netflix rom-com "Office Romance," Lopez sent the shutterbugs into overdrive with two sizzling looks. She was first spotted in a head-to-toe burgundy, reptile-embossed leather ensemble by Tom Ford, featuring the Duchesse biker coat and Vertigo boots, paired with a matching Hermès Birkin, which happens to be among the most eye-wateringly expensive outfits Jennifer Lopez has ever worn.

Lopez's second look, however, had fans confused. She made an unexpected fashion statement that might seem strange to the average person but has appeared in several of the latest runway collections. While the singer turned heads in an all-black set — comprising an Auter cape coat, Balmain bucket bag, and Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses – her choice of an 'oversized' pair of Hardot leather pumps placed her firmly into high-fashion territory. The shoe, which features a red interior pointed toe, high stiletto heel, and a distinctive horizontal metal bar across the vamp, appeared to be one size too big for the singer's feet. There was a visible gap between the back of her ankles and the shoe's toplines — and since they're impossible to wear that way, Lopez apparently used transparent straps to secure her feet in place.

Did J. Lo board the 'too big' heel runway trend?

While many high-fashion pieces never see the light of day in the real world, some make it into everyday wardrobes. One of the latest unconventional trends to sweep the runway is oversized footwear, and Jennifer Lopez — known for her iconic style transformation – has apparently brought the look to the streets.

For one such collection, titled "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," by fashion graduate Alara Kocman, the concept taps into a childhood desire to experiment with grown-up fashion. It imagines a little girl playing dress-up and slipping her tiny feet into Mom's high heels, despite their massive size. The collection featured oversized stilettoes and kitten heels, along with extra-long pearl necklaces, and voluminous trench coats, appearing to capture the essence of the '80s.

Other designers have also put their spin on this trend. For Balenciaga's autumn/winter 2026 collection, creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli unveiled the Bloom Pump, which features a deeply cut vamp with a bow detail that creates the illusion of a somewhat larger shoe. Victoria Beckham also embraced the look in her brand's autumn/winter 2025 collection, showcasing elongated square-toed patent pumps that were too big in the front and the back. For her brand's spring/summer 2026 collection, Beckham also debuted oversized illusion pumps that make the feet appear sunken into the shoes.

Known for bringing runway looks to the red carpet, Lopez certainly gave this '80s childhood-inspired trend new meaning. It also proves that her affinity for fashion goes beyond simply wearing the latest designs, extending into experimentation and embracing fashion's more unconventional side.
