With the release of its film adaptation in September 2026, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover is getting another massive wave of attention from fans of the psychological thriller genre. The mind games, claustrophobic domestic noir settings, and classic she-said-he-said dynamic made "Verity," often ranked as one of Colleen Hoover's top five books, an addicting modern thriller people couldn't stop thinking about. But when you've finished that infamous final letter and analyzed every disturbing line of Verity Crawford's manuscript, you're on that adrenaline high and searching for the perfect follow-up to keep that momentum going.

Those who seek one psychological thriller after another know the exact formula that sends chills down their spines as they complete each chapter. It's that unexplainable yet unsettling atmosphere the author creates, which includes the perfect mix of an unreliable narrator, questionable characters, a hidden journal or dark, sinister secret, and a claustrophobic household with too much going on behind closed doors.

With so many books in the thriller genre alone, decision paralysis is real. That said, Women.com has compiled a curated list for our readers who are obsessed with "Verity" and anything psychological thriller to help you skip the generic recommendations and jump straight into your next edge-of-your-seat read.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

While researching books similar to Colleen Hoover's "Verity," one book was recommended over and over again on Reddit threads and Facebook groups dedicated to books and reading. That book was none other than "The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides. The synopsis alone should tell you why it was so highly recommended for "Verity" fans.

The female protagonist, who is central to the mystery but far from an angel, a secret journal that reveals too many secrets, and an obsessed outsider trying to unravel the truth behind a horrific tragedy are all key elements that will feel almost comforting to readers who loved "Verity." You'll find that it's hard to just root for the main character, Alicia Berenson, which is how readers often felt about Verity Crawford. There's a similar, deeply unsettling, morally gray territory, forcing you to question whether you're looking at a traumatized poor soul or a manipulative villain.

The book impressively maintains an above 4.0-star rating on Goodreads with more than three million ratings. Some reviewers even praise the book for going above "Verity" in terms of its psychological complexity and jaw-dropping final execution. A 5-star reviewer wrote, "THE TWIST? UR F***ING JOKING. NO WAY WOULD I HAVE EVER GUESSED THAT. This book was incredible. I'd venture to say that it was better than 'Verity.' Absolutely incredible." The passionate review alone should be enough for you to add the thriller to your TBR.

The Wrong Sister by Claire Douglas

"The Wrong Sister" by Claire Douglas is the perfect thriller for fans of "Verity," who love the claustrophobic domestic suspense, hidden motives, and characters whose lives seem too perfect and posh to not be hiding something sinister underneath it all. If the trapped, uneasy atmosphere of the Crawford home in "Verity" drew you in, Douglas delivers that exact brand of paranoid domestic noir with a British twist.

Many will agree that there's a rivalry between sisters that quietly simmers for a lifetime, but not for Tasha and Alice, at least, that's what Tasha believes. Then, a house-sitting favor turns into a bloody crime scene that tears their perfect sisterhood and private lives wide open for everyone to see. Beneath the perfect life they had curated, both sisters were harboring deadly secrets from one another. This read will feel like a maze, where you're unsure who's the good guy and who's bad, or if there even is a good one in the first place.

Like "Verity," this book is a read that will have you guessing everything you thought you knew until the very last page. An Amazon reviewer gave the book five stars, noting, "This book enraged me (I loved it). Genuinely could not figure the twist out until the last couple pages."

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen

The title gives it away, but "The Wife Between Us" by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen centers around a toxic love triangle that domestic thriller fans love so much. Just like "Verity," it redefines just how much you knew or can trust the person that falls asleep next to you each night. The love triangle dynamic in this book will remind you of Lowen, Jeremy, and Verity as it's addictive, toxic, and will leave you questioning everyone's true motives until the very end.

Hendricks and Pekkanen take readers on an unexpected and chilling journey that weaponizes your intuitive jumps at each and every page. Just as Lowen began questioning everything in the Crawford residence, this book will force you to re-evaluate who the story's true victim and predator are.

The development of the characters, especially that of the husband, and the slow build of the narrative tension will leave you impressed. A 5-star Goodreads reviewer said, "I am just speechless! There are so many twists, I was seeing double! My head was spinning, and I went back to re-read several parts to 'make sure' I read what I thought I read." We'd like to think this pick just may become one of the best domestic thrillers you read.

The Only One Left by Riley Sager

If you found "Verity" addicting because Lowen decides to move into an isolated estate for the sake of assisting an incapacitated female author hiding sinister secrets, Riley Sager's "The Only One Left" is the next book you have got to add to your TBR. It is so on brand with the claustrophobic, isolated, unhinged suspense that made Colleen Hoover's smash hit so difficult to put down.

Just like in "Verity," a woman named Kit takes a job that forces her to move into a seaside estate to care for a mute, paralyzed woman, Lenora, who like Verity is hiding some seriously dark secrets. This book will feel like an endless uphill battle with psychological warfare as Kit tries her best to separate truth from fiction. The isolation Lowen is cornered into as she moves into the Crawford home is mirrored beat-for-beat as Kit steps into Hope's End.

A countless number of four and five star reviews of Sager's thriller mention "Verity." A 4-star Goodreads reviewer stated, "This book has great 'Verity' meets 'Broken Girls' vibes and is insanely bingeable, especially on audio," as another 5-star reviewer said, " It was the perfect combination of 'The Silent Patient' and 'Verity!!!' There were so many plot twists that I never saw coming." Again, the isolation trope should be good enough reason to add "The Only One Left" to your fall TBR.

The Push by Ashley Audrain

"The Push" by Ashley Audrain was recommended by Women.com as one of the most disturbing thriller books, according to reader reviews, so it should really be no surprise that it made the list of books to pick up if you want "Verity" vibes as the colder weather rolls in. If you felt the most terrifying part of reading Colleen Hoover's novel was questioning how far a mother could go when feelings of resentment and detachment take over, Audrain's "The Push" will feel like a psychological masterpiece.

Audrain dives into the harrowing taboos of maternal paranoia and the long-lasting effects of generational trauma a person can harbor. There's also an unraveling of a chilling reality behind the picture-perfect domestic life. What happens when everyone expects you to be happy since your life looks like a dream from the outside, but behind closed doors, it's a nightmare?  Audrain's prose allows you to really picture the unsettling slow suffocation of the main character, Blythe, as her husband continuously brushes off her concerns.

Although very different, it was another book that reviewers constantly compared to "Verity." They a Goodreads reviewer wrote, "I'm glad people compared this to 'Verity' because I would have never picked it up otherwise."

How we came up with this list

When you think of Colleen Hoover's "Verity," you may also think of "Then She Was Gone" from Lisa Jewell or any book from Frieda McFadden, really. While there's good reason for that, we wanted our readers to explore books that go beyond the usual viral suspects. Sure, you'll see works from these authors recommended when you search for similar suspenseful reads online, and they're great reads. However, there's a high chance you may have already read them or seen them endlessly featured on your social media feeds.

So we decided to curate a lineup that dives deeper into specific mechanics and elements of "Verity." Whether it's the suffocating isolation, the questionable motives, or the deadly secrets that may or may not cost a character their life, we selected books that will remind you of "Verity" in some subtle ways rather than relying too heavily on obvious tropes.

As always, once we had a decent number of picks for the list, we did a deep dive into the reviews of each title via Goodreads and Amazon. Since this list was focused on "Verity" vibes, we also searched for comparisons in Reddit discussions and reviews.
