Melissa McCarthy Completely Rewrote Her Weight Loss Story After She Stopped 'Over-Analyzing'
Melissa McCarthy has been on a longstanding weight-loss journey, but no longer concerns herself with it. The comedian appeared leaner than ever when she stepped onto the red carpet at Variety's 2026 Power of Women event in Beverly Hills in September 2026, with hubby Ben Falcone on her arm. Thanks to celebrity stylist Katja Cahill, the "Bridesmaids" actor wore a black sculpted, floor-length gown with dramatic sheer cape sleeves by Jenny Packham (below, left), described by the fashion label as crafted to 'enhance the contoured silhouette' — and that it did! Earlier that month, posing on the cover of a Variety feature (below, right), McCarthy showed off her curves in a floor-sweeping, body-hugging embroidered dress with a multi-layered tulle coat, putting her frame on full display.
McCarthy, who has struggled with her weight over the years, revealed that she simply stopped over-analyzing her appearance. "I finally said [to myself], 'Oh, for God's sake, stop worrying about it,' and it may be the best thing I've ever done," she shared on CBS Mornings, per Yahoo! Entertainment. "I truly stopped worrying about [my weight]. I stopped over-analyzing, over-thinking, over-doing anything." Interestingly, however, embracing her appearance and appreciating her body for what it was came with a surprising twist. "I just stopped constantly being worried about it, and I think there's something to kinda loosening up and not being so nervous and rigid about it that, bizarrely, has worked," said McCarthy, whose weight loss transformation has totally changed her face.
McCarthy is done trying so hard
Melissa McCarthy's stunning weight-loss transformation came from several different approaches. In 2011, she told People she went on a doctor-supervised all-liquid diet while filming "Gilmore Girls," which helped her lose 70 pounds in four months. It was a drastic approach, and she stated, "I'd never do that again. I felt starved and crazy half the time." Similarly, prepping for fight scenes in the movie "Spy," Life & Style reported the actor had lost 50 pounds in 2015. "It may be the best thing I've ever done. I feel amazing!" she told the outlet.
However, now McCarthy's done trying so hard to lose weight. In 2018, she told "Breakfast Club" that she finally decided to take a gradual, stress-free approach to diet and exercise. "If I can destress and do it slower and stop constantly trying to be on something, it will actually work better," she said. The "Tammy" actor also shared that after having children, she realized that her weight-loss journey was going to take some time.
For the most part, she would rather set a good example for her daughters by promoting a healthier lifestyle. "I want to show them how to be healthy," she said, according to People. "My husband and I always make a pot of vegetable soup that we puree and keep in the fridge. They don't eat processed foods. But if my oldest daughter wants a cupcake, once in a while I'll let her have it," McCarthy said.
