4 Times Duchess Sophie Threw Out The Royal Manicure Rulebook In Favor Of Fun Nails

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is one of the quieter members of the British royal family, but in the moments she stands out, she truly shines. Although she's had some missteps, as seen in these inappropriate Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh outfits that weren't fit for the palace, she's never put a foot wrong when it comes to her beauty looks. This time, we're shining the spotlight on the beloved royal's nail looks.

Instead of keeping things understated and toned-down in neutrals as presumably preferred by the royal rulebook, the Duchess has stepped out of the box and gone her own way. From burgundy to coral shades, it's clear Sophie loves exploring stunning and on-trend nail looks that are on par with these chic nail colors worn by the royal family. So we think it's high time that the Duchess of Edinburgh's fun nail looks are given their time in the sun.

There are many things that Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has to celebrate in 2026. In August, she announced that she was patronizing the Scottish non-profit, Visualise Scotland. She also uploaded an official portrait of herself beaming at the camera, dressed in a tailored cream dress designed by Beulah London, to her official Instagram account. However, it's her stylish manicure that's really standing out and catching attention.

The elegant royal opted for a dark, chocolate brown nail polish with a slight burgundy undertone. It's an out-of-the-box decision that ultimately served the Duchess and complements her entire look very well. If you want to recreate this nail look, OPI's RapiDry nail polish in the shade "Awe of a Sudden" is the perfect color that would do the job. Based on the picture above, taken in January 2026, it's clear the Duchess is dressed for business. Sophie showed up at Windsor Castle, where a premiere of the royal documentary "Finding Harmony: A King's Vision" was being held, in a crisp, emerald silk gown with a gold brooch. With her hair tied up in an elegant bun and simple accessories, Sophie was certainly one of the best-dressed that night, though she broke away from convention with another alluring nail look.

For this event, the Duchess selected a sweet, soft pink color that certainly adds some brightness to her whole look. This isn't the first time that the royal has worn such a shade, having had her nails painted the same (or similar) color back in July 2023. Surprisingly, this shade is still considered acceptable by royal standards. "It needs to be skin colored so hot red and bright pink, for example, are not correct," etiquette consultant William Hanson exclusively shared with The Sun, "especially for official occasions and particularly during mourning." Despite this, Sophie was definitely dabbling with fun color combinations.

Sophie was truly having the time of her life when she made an official visit to The Yellow Labrador Club back in April 2025. But aside from cuddling with adorable puppies, the Duchess of Edinburgh was also having a style moment. She was truly going for casual elegance with her beige blazer, a simple striped shirt, and white jeans, with gold earrings and bangles. But for a pop of color, she chose a head-turning shade for her nails. 

Burgundy red is certainly the correct color to add a bit of pizzazz to her entire look. Not only is she going against what's deemed acceptable by the royal rulebook, but it's also definitely not one of the on-trend nail polish colors you'll be seeing everywhere in spring 2025. "Red is the perfect 'anti-spring' manicure shade," nail expert Leighton Denny MBE exclusively shared with Good Housekeeping. "Wearing a red nail is both instantly chic and a knowing nod to the weather being so unpredictable."

The Duchess of Edinburgh's looks are always on point whenever she has to make an official appearance, and the picture above proves it. Sophie stepped out to visit the University of Edinburgh's Dyson RAD Dementia Lab in April 2025, her hair in an elegant bun, keeping her accessories to a pair of golden geometric earrings and a silver ring. Sophie wore a long-sleeved canary yellow dress, which she hid under a lab coat for the majority of the visit. However, she ensured she had a splash of color on her at all times. 

Her nails were a bright, coral pink, a truly gorgeous shade that fit the Duchess perfectly. It's also one of the perfect colors to usher in spring. What's more, it wasn't the first time Sophie dabbled with coral shades, having worn a similar color to the 2023 state banquet held at Buckingham Palace. It's definitely a shade Sophie favors and one that we look forward to seeing more of.
