Before Hailey Bieber & Jennifer Lawrence: Julia Roberts Was The Oversized Blazer Blueprint

Although Hailey Bieber and Jennifer Lawrence might serve as your style inspo, there's one garment in particular that they can't take credit for setting the trend for. Decades before, Julia Roberts took the red carpet by storm by choosing to wear oversized blazers instead of elegant evening gowns and figure-hugging bodycon dresses. With blazers belonging on a list for the most comfortable fashion trends for fall, we think there's no moment more fitting to highlight how much Julia Roberts has done for the outsized blazer trend.

As seen in the image above taken in 1990, Roberts confidently walked awards shows in an olive green oversized blazer with then-boyfriend Kiefer Sutherland. She wore the blazer over a collared suede-yellow top. She kept her hair in a short close-cropped cut that serves as one of Julia Roberts' most stunning hair looks, proving she can pull anything off. Not only is the "Pretty Woman" star rocking this androgynous look, but she has also demonstrated that outsized blazers don't just belong in the office. 

It appears Julia Roberts isn't hanging up her blazers anytime soon. In a nostalgic callback to her iconic Armani gray suit look back at the 1990 Golden Globe Awards, the "Notting Hill" star chose to wear a similar outfit in late 2025 during her appearance on a segment of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." However, this version of the suit is far more structured and tailored compared to the 1990 version, with the pants being longer and bigger as well. Roberts kept her hair in a neat bun and donned a dark blue tie, as well as black spectacles and a pair of golden hoop earrings.

The "Ocean's Eleven" actor only has fond memories of wearing that fateful suit in 1990 (and winning a Golden Globe for "Steel Magnolias" to boot), and revealed that she still has it safely stored in her wardrobe somewhere. In fact, the "Eat, Pray, Love" star stated that she bought the suit on a whim and relied on no personal stylist. "Back in those days, there were no fashion rules," Roberts recounted fondly to British Vogue. "You just wore whatever you wanted to wear and I wore jeans and a white T-shirt all the time." It's certainly unimaginable to us today in a world of glitzy gowns and curated looks, but we can't help but feel grateful for being blessed with some iconic fashion moments.
