Salma Hayek has always been confident in herself. And it's no wonder, as she has been a staple of the Hollywood film industry for years, not minding the critics as she's considered one of the older celebs that aren't playing by society's beauty rules. Born in 1966 in Mexico, Hayek had a relatively good and stable upbringing. She must have always had a passion for acting, as she decided to take a chance and, determined to make it big in Hollywood, moved to live in California in 1991. 

She starred in several '90s films, such as "Fools Rush In" and "Wild Wild West," before earning an Oscar nomination for the film "Frida," which she also co-produced. She followed her run of success in films like "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" and "Grown Ups." 

Aside from acting and producing, Hayek has also dipped her toes into voice acting. She voiced characters in the hit "Puss in Boots" franchise, "The Prophet," and "Sausage Party." And throughout the length of her successful career, Hayek has learned many things about herself, such as the importance of understanding who you are without anyone else's interference. Salma Hayek spoke these words in an exclusive interview with Indie London regarding her movie "Puss In Boots," where she responded to a question asking what words of wisdom she would impart to someone who also wishes to emulate the level of success she's reached.

Hayek revealed that she could only rely on herself as there was no other Mexican woman in the industry to look up to. As such, there are times where only you can pave the way for yourself, and that in the long-run, you'll find more contentment in it compared to taking cues from someone else.

Salma Hayek's words really show that you can only find contentment within yourself. Outsourcing how you value and see yourself to others will never end well, though Hayek's quote does acknowledge that the rise of social media really exacerbated the problem. But all in all, Hayek thinks the world has gotten it twisted when it comes to self-perception and, by extension, how to build your self-esteem. 

In short, Hayek advises us to stop either comparing ourselves to other people or looking for others to compare ourselves to. We have to take the first step in centering ourselves and to not care so much about how others perceive us. And while that is hard to do in this day and age of ever-advancing technology, the peace of mind you will receive is a reward in and of itself.
