For two seasons that bump right up against each other on the calendar, summer and fall nail looks couldn't be more different. Summer is for bright, fruity citrus colors and aquatic blues, while the prettiest fall nail trends are inspired by autumn's foliage — brown, burgundy, pumpkin, pine, and so on. There's hardly any overlap between the seasonal shades, which creates a real dilemma for anyone with a late August pedicure appointment. It turns out, however, that there are colors that make sense for both backyard barbecues and bewitching bonfires.

"The transition from summer to fall is that moment when you're not quite ready to give up bright summer colors, but the palette gradually starts becoming deeper, warmer, and more muted," Maryna Slynko — international judge, award-winning nail educator, and founder of Slynko Beauty Bloom Studio in Overland Park, Kansas — exclusively shared with Women.com. "That's why both light neutrals and richer shades that begin to introduce the feeling of a new season work especially well during this time." Slynko gave us the low-down on exactly which shades will seamlessly carry you from poolside to puddle-jumping.

Soft Milky White / Refined Nude

Good news for those who cling to their neutrals long after the summer trendsetters have fled to more vivid pastures: You're better equipped for transitioning to fall. "Milky whites and delicate nude shades remain relevant well beyond the end of summer," Slynko exclusively told Women.com. "They look clean, fresh, and beautifully polished without being tied to any particular season." They also go with everything, which means "they're a great choice for anyone who wants a versatile pedicure that works equally well with the last looks of summer and the first outfits of fall."

That doesn't mean you have to stick to the same-old, same-old, however. Throwbacks to the grunge decade will be huge this fall, and these shades are begging for '90s-style French tips. "Another way to update a delicate shade like this is to add a subtle chrome powder," Slynko said. "It creates a soft pearlescent glow and gives a classic milky or nude pedicure a more modern feel while maintaining its minimalist elegance." Try Londontown lacur polish in London Fog to achieve the look at home.

Classic Red

The timeless appeal of "a rich, classic red" is another win for those who refuse to abandon their signature colors. It's "one of the most versatile colors for transitioning from summer into fall," Slynko exclusively told Women.com. "It's bright enough to hold onto that summer energy and look beautiful with open-toe shoes, yet it has a timeless elegance that pairs effortlessly with an early fall wardrobe. It's one of those shades you don't need to give up simply because summer is ending."

The key is depth and tone. A fire engine red will stick out like a stubbed toe against muted autumn shades, but a burgundy will be too drab for the boardwalk. The best strategy is to strike a balance with a perfectly equidistant cherry red, like Londontown lacur polish in Lady Luck. Keep it as warm as sunshine and scarves, too. Blue-red blood tones are better suited to Halloween parties and mistier late autumn nights.

Icy Chrome Pink

While fall is usually associated with darker tones, those early September days don't have to be so moody. Think first days of school on still-bright early mornings, baskets full of rosy apples on the last days of the farmer's market, and iced chai lattes. These activities pair perfectly with a soft, summery pink, so if the warmer months are an excuse for you to go totally girlie, there's no reason to immediately forsake those feminine shades.

As for transitioning a petal-pedi out of the dog days, "a delicate cool-toned pink with a subtle pearlescent or chrome effect is a modern way to carry a lighter summer palette into early fall," Slynko exclusively told Women.com. "The sheer pink base keeps the look natural and airy, while the cool-toned shimmer adds interest and a contemporary touch without overwhelming the pedicure." Who knows? This sugar plum look might even take you straight from sweater weather into the holiday season. Create the look yourself with MIZHSE Pearlescent Pink Nail Polish.

Deep Sapphire Blue

Those who struggled to find a summer shade because they prefer darker colors (we see you, goth sisters) probably ended up landing on blue. After all, what could be more tropical than a deep, churning expanse of ocean? You might think you have to leave aquatic colors behind come September, as fall colors tend to lean warmer, but the right shade of blue can bring the mystery of the sea right along with you.

The key is depth. "A deep sapphire blue is a beautiful first step into the richer palette of fall," Slynko exclusively told Women.com. "It has the depth of a darker shade, but the saturated blue tone keeps it from feeling too heavy for late summer. It's a great alternative to traditional wine and burgundy shades for anyone who wants to embrace the mood of fall while choosing something a little less expected." Save those shades until the leaves are on the ground. Until then, crimson can wait.

When is the right time to transition from a summer pedicure to an early fall look?

Knowing when to make the switch can be tricky business. "Toenails grow more slowly than fingernails, so a pedicure does not need to be refreshed as often as a manicure," Slynko pointed out. "On average, a professional pedicure is recommended every 6–8 weeks, or approximately every month and a half to two months," so scheduling your appointment too early or too late could leave you with an outdated look for weeks. In fact, "with proper at-home care, including regular moisturizing, applying cuticle oil, and gently maintaining the heels, a pedicure can stay fresh and well-groomed for longer," she said.

On the bright side, "that is why there is no need to change the color simply because the season is beginning to shift," she continued. It makes selecting the right shade to bring you through the end of summer and into early autumn all the more critical, but as long as you choose wisely, you don't have to stress about it. "The best time to transition from a bright summer shade to a softer, deeper, or more muted early fall color is during your next regularly scheduled pedicure appointment in late summer or early fall," Slynko concluded.
