Emmy Rossum's Marriage At 21 Is A Lesson To Women Everywhere: 'You Don't Have To Do This'

Emmy Rossum has some words of wisdom to share with other women, and it's not about acting. The "Poseidon" star has something to say when it comes to marriage, especially marrying young. Rossum was married to Justin Siegel from 2008 to 2010, with the actor being just 21 when she tied the knot. In a segment of Alex Cooper's famed "Call Her Daddy" podcast, Rossum detailed how they definitely rushed to the altar without thinking too deeply. And they're one of the celeb weddings that weren't a total spectacle, with Rossum stating her wedding dress was a white turtleneck she fished out of her wardrobe.

Alarm bells were ringing in Rossum's head, especially after Siegel didn't even get an actual priest to officiate the marriage and made do with "some guy on the internet." "I was like, 'This is appropriate, right?' Not hearing the smoke detector in my head, being like, 'Don't do this. You don't have to do this,'" the "Angelyne" star shared with Alex Cooper, per People, "I knew in my gut it wasn't right." Her marriage soon went downhill, highlighting to women and girls everywhere to always listen to your instincts and not give in to societal expectations.

It seems Emmy Rossum took the lessons she learned from her marriage to Justin Siegel to heart when she eventually found love with "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail. The pair started dating in 2013, after their working relationship on Esmail's film "Comet" turned into something romantic. When Esmail decided to propose in 2016, he used his creative mind for a truly out-of-the-box proposal. Instead of popping the question with a ring, he arranged for a fake article to be written narrating their love story. 

And it really caught the "Shameless" actor off guard in the most unexpected way. During an appearance on Chelsea Handler's talk show, "Chelsea", "The Day After Tomorrow" star recounted the whole thing. "I happened to be in the bathtub when it happened. And then I realized that it was happening. And then I got out of the bathtub because I didn't want the story to be that I was in the bathtub when it was happening," Rossum detailed cheerily to Handler, per US Weekly. The pair made it to the altar in 2017 and have remained married since, and we think they're one of the celeb marriages that will stand the test of time.
