What To Look For In A Sunscreen For Mature Skin This Summer

The skin undergoes obvious changes as time goes on, and with that come new needs that must be met. Aside from knowing what to look for in a foundation for mature skin, it's clear that adjustments to your skincare routine are necessary to cater to mature skin. One of the most pivotal parts of maintaining skin health and appearance is to use sunscreen, but even your sunscreen requires a massive update as you age. Women spoke exclusively with Dr. Brendan Camp, who is a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, about what to look for in sunscreens for mature skin this summer.

Naturally, your sunscreen must still provide broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays, but Dr. Camp revealed the necessity of a multi-tasking sunscreen. In short, your sunscreen needs to do more of the heavy lifting than usual, from brightening the skin to combating redness and irritation. "Consider looking for sunscreen products that offer valuable benefits," he shared with us, before adding, "These could include ingredients that improve hydration, protect from skin irritation or inflammation, neutralize the impact of free radicals, and encourage collagen production."

These are the ingredients you need to find in your sunscreen

According to Dr. Brendan Camp, there is a list of effective ingredients that you should look for when shopping for a sunscreen. One of them is Vitamin C, which is a known powerful antioxidant that, when combined with a sunscreen, would boost the effectiveness of your sunscreen. "Vitamin C neutralizes the negative effects of free oxygen radicals on skin, namely the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots," Dr. Camp exclusively told Women. And thankfully, two-in-one products are available in the sun care market, with the Laneige Radian-C Suncream being the perfect example.

But if your skin is prone to redness and you'd like to combat that while shielding your skin from the sun at the same time, then having centella asiatica in your sunscreen formulation is essential. "Centella asiatica (cica) is featured in many barrier creams and balms because it calms skin, helps repair the skin barrier, and facilitates the repair of damaged skin," the dermatologist stated. One of the best sunscreens that checks these two boxes at once is the IUNIK Centella Calming Daily Sunscreen, which has a lightweight, hydrating formula that leaves no white cast and sits comfortably under makeup. It's the ideal sunscreen product for mature skin and perfect for summer.
