The Romantic Hidden Detail In Grace Kelly's Wedding Look

Grace Kelly's life was undoubtedly a beautiful fairytale. She made her mark as a talented actor in Hitchcock classics such as "Rear Window", managing to win three Golden Globes and an Oscar. And then she won the heart of Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who proposed to Grace Kelly with a legendary 10.48 carat engagement ring. Their wedding, held in 1956, was televised to the whole world. But it's the small details that show just how much the couple loved one another, and it's all present in the late Princess of Monaco's wedding shoes, as seen below.

Not only was her name stitched into the insole of the specially customized shoes designed by David Evins, but there was a subtle token of affection to Prince Rainier as well. The former Hollywood actor had her husband's name carved into her right shoe, while her name adorned the left. It's a thoughtful way to show that he was always in her thoughts, but it seemed Kelly was feeling the jitters leading up to her saying 'I do', as she had a copper coin installed into her right heel for good luck. The latter seemed to work like a charm, as the wedding went off without a hitch.

Grace Kelly's wedding was a golden opportunity for Hollywood

Aside from the romantic aspect of Grace Kelly's grand wedding, there was the business side of things that was decidedly less glamorous. In Grace Kelly's day, Hollywood actors usually entered into binding contracts with major film studios that, according to Harper's Bazaar, lasted on average between four and seven years. Due to not finishing her contract, Kelly had no choice but to allow her film studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), to film and broadcast her wedding. In fact, the entire event was a veritable golden goose for MGM.

The wedding dress itself was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, with the wedding makeup done by MGM staff members. The wedding was eventually watched by over 30 million people globally, and footage of the wedding was wrapped up into the film, "The Wedding in Monaco". MGM made a pretty hefty return for their investment in Grace Kelly's wedding, with a collective revenue of $159,000 ($1,958,991 in 2026). Despite MGM's hand in things, the whole event proved unforgettable, with Kelly's wedding dress alone becoming one of the best royal wedding dresses of the modern era.
