Side-By-Side Pics Highlight Laurie Metcalf's Gorgeous Gray Hair Transformation
"Roseanne" star Laurie Metcalf is no longer the brunette we've all grown accustomed to seeing on our TV screens, but is instead now a full-blown silver fox. As with many celebs who have embraced their graying natural hair color, Metcalf commanded the red carpet at the 2026 Tony Awards in New York City in June, rocking a stunning platinum-gray pixie cut.
Metcalf, who took home her third Tony Award that evening for best featured actress in a play for her performance in the "Death of a Salesman" revival, looked quite stunning in a shimmery multicolored sequin floor-length dress as she showed off her gorgeous, icy-gray hair transformation. In side-by-side pics comparing her look now to her younger days as a brunette, the "The Connors" actor not only proves she's aging gracefully, but her evolved cool-toned mane enhances her features, making her appear brighter and more radiant as ever.
The new look is particularly surprising because, despite the actor's prolific portfolio of film appearances, including roles in "Lady Bird," "JFK," and "Monster," she has rarely made drastic changes to her appearance, much less her hair. Though she has debuted several cuts and styles in these films, she has never strayed too far from her natural brunette-colored hair, which makes seeing her now with gray hair all the more striking.
Laurie Metcalf embraced going gray naturally
Once Laurie Metcalf began experiencing the inevitable shift from brunette to gray, she seamlessly incorporated the transition on camera. She appeared in season 3 of "The Conners" during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with a hazelnut-colored lob (long bob haircut) that revealed her graying roots. "As soon as I heard we were going back [to filming] and I hadn't, of course, done anything to my hair, I thought, oh, this is going to be perfect," Metcalf told ABC7 News. "I'll let the roots grow out. I'll do my own hair and makeup, and I'll look like hell, like we all do and are supposed to right now."
The actor appears to have made the full transition to gray sometime after Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" Broadway production in April 2026, with the assistance of celebrity hairstylist David Benjamin, who said he was honored by the opportunity to cut and color the actor's tresses. "Was very honored when Laurie Metcalf asked me to chop off all of her hair and color it white/gray ... I'm so lucky to get to work with one of my acting hero[es]," he wrote on Instagram – also noting that he used Wella Hair and Mr. Smith's hair products to achieve her chic platinum-gray look.
The Tony Award-winning actor — who is among other Hollywood stars we love for embracing aging naturally – first gave fans a glimpse of her new 'do when she appeared at the 90th Annual New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards on May 7, 2026 (photo above), and later during interviews following her Tony Award nomination.
