'I'm Not Quite There Yet': Brooke Shields Is Still Working On Embracing Her Gray Hair Journey
Brooke Shields is holding on to her iconic hair in all its glory for as long as she possibly can. Not only does she have no intention of cutting off her signature mane, but she's also committed to preserving its lustrous brunette color even if that means making monthly trips to the salon for years to come.
Besides her striking good looks and impressive acting chops, the former '80s and '90s bombshell will forever be known for her thick, voluminous brunette waves. Dubbed "The Brooke," Shields' sun-kissed hair achieved a level of fame all on its own during those decades and continues to be heavily referenced in beauty trends today. It's no wonder she wants to maintain her prized possession and what has become one of her most recognizable features, even going so far as to launch her haircare brand "Commence," which is formulated specifically for women over 40.
Speaking exclusively with People in a 2024 interview, "The Blue Lagoon" actor – now in her 60s – revealed that her hair is completely gray now, but she isn't ready for the world to see it. Frankly, she's not ready to see it either. "I'm not quite there yet," she admitted. "But it grows out all gray. It's kind of crazy. And that's a different texture too." She also noted that gray hair comes with a different texture which has more coarseness to it. As for maintaining her vibrant brunette-colored tresses, the movie star says frequent salon visits are non-negotiable. "Every four weeks, and that's pushing it," she said. "My hair would be all gray!"
How Brooke Shields' hair care routine maintains her iconic hair
The movie star knows how important it is to maintain healthy hair in your 50s and beyond. As Brooke Shields gets older, making smart hair care choices and keeping a consistent routine has become increasingly important in addressing the effects of aging hair, particularly when it comes to dullness and changes in texture.
"Once I hit a certain age, my hair started to get frizzy, the texture changed, and it lost its luster," Shields told Byrdie. "So, my hair care routine became about something much bigger." Along with healthy hair habits, Shields relies on her plant-based Commence products to help rejuvenate and hydrate her hair: "I don't wash my hair every day, but when I do, I use our Detoxifying Shampoo and Probiotic Smoothing Conditioner. The shampoo creates a nice lather without stripping your hair. The conditioner doesn't weigh your hair down and hydrates every strand. I also use our Root Serum, 3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner, and Shine-Enhancing Detangler daily."
Another aspect of maintaining her signature mane is preserving its long beachy waves that she has become known for over the years. As such, the "Mother of the Bride" actor said cutting her hair is simply not an option. "It just doesn't work on my face. I have a really square jaw, and I look very square and cheeky with short hair," she told People. "And I have a cowlick. So the time that I had my hair really short, I had to physically do it, and I mean, it was a bad look. It was a lot of maintenance."
