Sarah Michelle Gellar Won't Co-Sign A Return Of This Iconic '90s Accessory Trend

Sarah Michelle Gellar made her mark in memorable '90s movies like "Cruel Intentions," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," solidifying herself as a style icon. Gellar's wardrobe of preppy sweaters, overalls, miniskirts, and slip dresses helped define '90s and early '00s fashion, and continues to influence trends today. Off-screen, the actor also became known for the various times she rocked leggy looks.

Then there were the '90s beauty trends, which saw Gellar embracing butterfly clips, micro bangs, and statement charm jewelry. Though she rocked these iconic '90s trends at the time, Gellar identified one accessory she said should never return to modern-day fashion. "I don't get the choker thing. It just cuts your neck off. It looks like you're a weird bobblehead," she told Glamour. "I am not a choker girl."

That might be the case today, but Gellar influenced a generation of rebellious teens when she rocked velvet charm chokers during their '90s resurgence. In October 2022, the "Scooby-Doo" actor even shared a throwback photo of herself sporting the classic piece — and looked far from a bobblehead. "If you never put a ring on a velvet choker, were you really a 90's kid?!?" she wrote in the caption, prompting followers to prove their worth. While one follower responded, "I have a permanent choker tattoo'd on my throat proving I'm a #90sbaby," another insisted, "We need to bring back the choker."

Oh, but there's more ...

Chokers aren't the only '90s fad Gellar wants buried. Regretting she had any part in this beauty trend, when speaking to Glamour, she added, "I don't want over-tweezed eyebrows back. We all look better with an eyebrow." Fearing the return of more unappealing trends, she continued, "There's the tweezing of your eyebrows. Oh, and then the dyeing of your eyebrows — I did that in the '90s, which is coming back, the bleached brows. I'm not doing that." Gellar did mention, however, that there are some classic '90s pieces she still adores today. "By the way, the '90s were cool AF," she said, highlighting her affinity for slip dresses. "I never stopped wearing them."

She loved the '90s so much that — aside from her outfits that could have come straight from Buffy Summers' closet — the character whose wardrobe she would instantly swap with today is none other than wealthy teen socialite, Kathryn Merteuil, whom she played in "Cruel Intentions". "That's easy ... She had an incredible closet," Gellar told People, quickly pointing to her pinstriped Dolce & Gabbana suit paired with a black bustier. "My first [favorite] was the suit, the iconic suit she wears in the beginning," she said. "Our costume designer wanted to get a custom-made suit, and she took me to this very famous store in Los Angeles called Trashy Lingerie." It was the first time the actor had anything made just for her, leaving a lasting impression to this day.
