Jennifer Lopez Turned An Awkward Joke About Her Age Into A Celebration Of Her Long Career
Jennifer Lopez remains an undisputed icon in entertainment thanks to her extraordinary résumé as an actor and singer, but what truly sets her apart from other celebs of her time is that she's still performing at the highest level — and arguably better than ever. Sustaining that kind of star power, relevance, and longevity across decades is an achievement that rarely anyone has been able to accomplish.
So, when she sat down for a Variety interview in 2024 with editor Clayton Davis, who remarked that she was "getting up there" in age while questioning "why" she was still so dedicated to her work, the "Let's Get Loud" singer used the moment not only to address the comment, but also turn it into a celebration of her long-standing career. "It's funny you think that I'm getting up there," Lopez responded (in footage obtained by TMZ), prompting the editor to quickly clarify that the remark was "a joke." The unbothered star, however, used the comment as an opportunity to reflect on her journey and acknowledge the fans who have supported her throughout her career. "It's because I want to say thank you, you guys. Because we've been doing this a long time together. We've been doing it a long time, and you guys have been here with me," she said.
Now, in her 50s, Lopez is among a growing number of female celebs who are confronting aging with confidence, noting in a W Magazine interview that she has become more self-assured with age. "I just appreciate myself in a way I didn't when I was [younger]. And it's not about perfection. I like the scars that I have."
Jennifer Lopez looks ahead: 'The best is yet to come'
As to why she has continued to push forward with her career despite already achieving massive success, the "Unstoppable" actor said she simply couldn't imagine life any other way. "I don't see a world where I don't do this. There's just no life for me without being creative — without acting and singing and making music and dancing and performing for everybody, and entertaining — that's what I do," Lopez said. "As an individual, obviously I have my kids and everything, and I have a beautiful life, but as an individual, as a person, that's who I am ... and I love it, and so I will continue doing it as long as I'm here."
Reflecting on her journey at the time, the celebrity promised fans "The best is yet to come." Delivering on that promise, she has since starred in movies such as "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (2025), "Office Romance" (2026), and "The Last Mrs. Parrish" (2026). She also returned for her second Las Vegas concert residency, "Up All Night Live" (2025–2026), while continuing to release new music, including the singles "Heart and Flowers" (2025), "Birthday" (2026), and "Save Me Tonight" (2026) with David Guetta.
Jennifer Lopez, who has had an iconic style transformation, further explained that, for her, life is ultimately about connecting with her fans through her craft. "For me, that's really what my life is about, making things that are beautiful and entertaining, but that also let people know that love is what matters and that you're not alone, and that we're all in this together."
