How Jodie Foster Navigated Her 'Tough' 50s & Is Able To Thrive In Her 60s
Being a woman in Hollywood is tough, and nobody knows that better than Jodie Foster herself. The four-time Golden Globe winner has spent much of her life before the cameras, as she kickstarted her career at the tender age of three. But now "The Silence of the Lambs" star is one of the celebs that is confronting aging with confidence and she got candid about how challenging hitting 50 was, but how easy everything turned out to be once 60 rolled around. In an exclusive sit-down with Interview, Foster not only got refreshingly honest about how concerned she was about her appearance, but also how it might affect her career and the roles available to her.
"I ... knew that I couldn't compete with my old self. So my fifties were tough. Then something happened when I turned 60. I was like, 'I figured it out. This is good.'" Foster said, baring all to the publication. The "Taxi Driver" actor then went on to say that she no longer feels the stress of anticipating whether a movie of hers does well or not. Moreover, the Hollywood veteran even took a stance against plastic surgery, going as far as to reject the cosmetic procedures most Hollywood elites have taken to like ducks to water. It's clear Foster is confident and content in where she is and in her looks, being a shining example of an older celeb who isn't playing by society's beauty rules.
Jodie Foster is content being unapologetically herself
Presumably due to how well-established and experienced Jodie Foster is in the industry, the silver screen legend has come to a point where she freely says what's on her mind. And she didn't hold back on her thoughts about the state of Hollywood and how older women are portrayed on-screen. "The roles were confused. People are confused on how to write about women in their fifties, just like women in their fifties are confused about themselves," the "True Detective: Night Country" star exclusively shared with Elle. And though Foster has had a hand in directing several films throughout the course of her career, she's essentially choosing to focus on what matters most.
In fact, "The Accused" star has taken inspiration from some very important people in her life as she ages and shifts priorities away from the beauty and career pressures of Hollywood. "I have a friend who I adore, who's 80 ... she's an extraordinary person," the "Nell" actor exclusively shared with The Guardian. "I get to see what's ahead, what's possible. For all of her accomplishments, what she keeps saying ... is that the greatest thing is helping communities of other women." And it seems Foster has taken her friend's example to heart and put it into practice using her wealth of experience, publicly revealing that she's adopted a more mentor-like role for up-and-coming actresses and just watching out for them. It's an admirable path to take and one we can all stand to emulate.
