The Real-Life Partners Of Roseanne's Leading Ladies

When "Roseanne" premiered in 1988, its depiction of wives, mothers, and daughters was revolutionary. These weren't the domestic goddesses of the '50s family sitcom or the plucky career girls of primetime in the '70s. They had unexpected bills, troublemaking kids, and the same blue-collar jobs as their boyfriends and husbands. The younger women were less tired and stressed, but they were intelligent and intractable. Above all, they were hilarious. Unlike many series of the time, it was the ladies who got most of the laughs, often at the expense of the men, one of their primary sources of frustration.

But how true was that offscreen? Are the men (and women) in the lives of the leading ladies of "Roseanne" their biggest headaches — or their greatest joys? Like most people, the answer appears to be a little bit of both. They've had quickie marriages, long divorces, and a few traveled roads as bumpy as that final season that we don't talk about.

Lecy Goranson likes her privacy, but Sarah Chalke had a long engagement

The oldest Connor daughter's love life was often a focus of the series, but the actress who initially played Becky, Lecy Goranson, has kept her romantic relationships out of the public eye. When her scholastic ambitions left her often unavailable to film, however, she was replaced intermittently by Sarah Chalke, who later found even greater TV success with "Scrubs," "Rick and Morty," and "Firefly Lane." Her skyrocket to stardom generated keen interest in her personal life, so in 2006, her representative announced her engagement to entertainment lawyer Jamie Afifi, whom she had begun dating three years earlier while filming "Scrubs."

In a twist reminiscent of "How I Met Your Mother," a series Chalke frequently guest-starred in, she and Afifi made it more than a decade following the announcement without actually tying the knot. In that time, they had two children, a boy named Charlie and a girl named Frances. By 2022, however, reps for the pair confirmed to People that they had "separated some time ago."

Sara Gilbert dated a co-star and married a songwriting legend

The Connors' younger daughter, Darlene, was much less boy crazy than her older sister, but she ended up having a long and somewhat complicated relationship with her sister's husband's younger brother, played by Johnny Galecki. Offscreen, things got thorny between Gilbert and Galecki as well, albeit for very different reasons. In 2013, Gilbert confessed that, although they dated for a bit during the show's run,she always found herself glum after their hookups. This led her to the conclusion that she was gay, which she said Galecki was "super sweet about," per Us Weekly.

After "Roseanne" wrapped, Gilbert began a decade-long relationship with Allison Adler. They had two children, a boy named Levi and a girl named Sawyer, before separating in 2011. By the next year, she was spotted getting cozy with Linda Perry, the former frontwoman of 4 Non Blondes, who wrote such massive hits as "Get the Party Started" for Pink and "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilera. Gilbert and Perry got married in 2014, and their son, Rhodes, was born the following year, though they separated in 2019 and divorced in 2024.

Laurie Metcalf married her onscreen love interest

Sara Gilbert wasn't the only leading lady to date one of her "Roseanne" costars. After Matt Roth joined the cast in the show's 5th season as the abusive boyfriend of Roseanne's sister, Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalf, it was nothing but heart eyes between the two actors. Their son, Will, was born the next year, and they married in 2005. They adopted another son in 2006, but they separated the same year, divorcing in 2014.

This wasn't Metcalf's first marriage, however. In 1983, she married actor Jeff Perry, whom she worked with at the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago; that same year, Metcalf gave birth to their daughter, "Young Sheldon" star Zoe Perry. (Zoe actually plays the same character that her mother played when she was a leading lady on "The Big Bang Theory.") Though Metcalf and Jeff divorced when Zoe was just two years old, they've maintained a close-knit blended family, with Metcalf referring to Jeff's second wife as her sister-in-law.

The fourth time was the charm for Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Connor may have been a one-man woman, but her offscreen counterpart's serial monogamy was prolific. It began in 1974, long before Roseanne Barr was a household name, when she married Bill Pentland, the motel clerk she'd met four years earlier on her first night in a new state after running away from home as a teenager. They had three children by the time they divorced in 1990, and Barr shocked America even more than her TV character by marrying comedian Tom Arnold just four days later.

Sadly, Roseanne's Hollywood ending wasn't so happy. After a headline-filled four years, she filed for divorce, accusing Arnold of physical and emotional abuse. By the end of the year, she was pregnant by her former bodyguard, Ben Thomas, who she married on Valentine's Day 1995. Alas, they too divorced in 2002, but the same year, Barr met Johnny Argent through a writing competition on her website. They've been together ever since, including nearly 20 years living on a Hawaiian nut farm. Considering Barr's recent controversies, some might find that as blistering of a punchline as any she's delivered onscreen.
