'You Never Go To Bed Mad': The Tried-And-True Advice Rita Wilson Carries In Her Marriage To Tom Hanks

When it comes to successful celeb marriages that we think will stand the test of time, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks come to mind. The pair have been married since 1988 and appear to remain as loved up as ever. But what is the secret to their long-lasting relationship? Well, Wilson has no issues sharing exactly what she and Hanks do to keep their marriage going, sitting down for an exclusive interview with People. Aside from stating that both sides have to be in alignment to make it work, the "Sleepless in Seattle" star emphasized the importance of one particular thing. "You never go to bed mad," the singer said, before continuing, "You don't want to wake up in the morning and have that lingering feeling. So whatever it is, resolve it before you go to bed."

It's certainly a good piece of advice, and one well worth its weight in gold, based on Wilson's Instagram account. In a post from February 2026, the couple posed together and grinned at the camera, alongside a caption celebrating Valentine's Day. Fans showed their love for the couple in the comments. "COUPLE GOALS," one Instagram user commented. "Love you guys!! You have done so much to bring happiness in movies and music!" another fan added, among a deluge of other comments replete with heart emojis.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are in it for the long haul

For any marriage to work in the long run, both sides have to concede to some things over the years. But Tom Hanks himself has publicly admitted that he did something very important even before he walked down the aisle with Rita Wilson and made it official. As Hanks and Wilson were of two different religions, the "Cast Away" star decided to take the first step in making their relationship a success. "I sacrificed something for my wife. Rita has Greek roots, and they have the Orthodox faith," Hanks exclusively shared with HELLO, "And I was a Catholic, so before getting married, I converted my faith out of deep respect for her family." It seemed to be the right choice, too, as Wilson happily tied the knot to Hanks, wearing a stunning wedding dress that was outside-the-box.

But according to Wilson, along with going to bed at peace with one another, there are other things that promote a healthy, lasting union. The "Til You're Home" singer said the couple still share one bathroom in their sprawling $26 million Pacific Palisades mansion, and Wilson insisted that doing so is important in order to keep the bond strong in their marriage. "That's where you download the day. You laugh about what you're doing," she further shared with People, "In the mornings, you're thinking about, 'What are you doing today? Where are you going to be? Great, I want you there.'" While Wilson acknowledges that, in a marriage, people change over the years, she strongly believes that spending as much time together with one's spouse is a surefire way to make it until the end.
