For some celebs—like Reese Witherspoon, who co-wrote one of October 2025's hottest new releases with Harlan Coben—their field of creative work doesn't satiate their desire for storytelling. It's like they've got a narrative itch that can only be scratched by writing a book. But often, writing one, especially one that's seriously gripping, is a specialized task that requires more than just a famous name on the cover. That's why celebs will often turn to their most powerful secret ingredient to write their story: an established, bestselling author. This is the power couple recipe that transforms a celeb's dreams into an exciting, page-turning masterpiece. And you won't believe how many celebs have collaborated with some of the most renowned authors.

Getting the inside details of a celeb's favorite book or a whole reading list already seems intimate enough. Like, how exciting is it to know that "The Hunger Games" series is one of Taylor Swift's favorite books? But seeing stars tell their very own story is a whole other level of intrigue for book lovers.

That said, we thought it was time to spotlight some reader-approved, celebrity-author collaboration books for our readers who might be curious to know what it's like to get inside the heads of some iconic public figures. From a partnership between a former U.S. president and a legendary mastermind author behind addictive thrillers to a visionary filmmaker teaming up with a fantasy virtuoso of the literary world to expand his cinematic universe, reader reviews declare these books the best celebrity-author collaborations.

Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke

If you fell in love with the masterpiece that is Netflix's "Frankenstein," and you have been dying to know what goes on in Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro's mind, then you have to add "Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun" to your TBR. Surprisingly, it's not widely known that del Toro penned a book, which was co-authored with Cornelia Funke, the author of the bestselling "Inkworld" trilogy, based on his film. You'll often see film aficionados searching for stories that capture the same haunting atmosphere, and they're shocked to hear there's a book that makes the world even more immersive.

Released in 2019, "Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun" is an expanded reimagining of del Toro's original film, "Pan's Labyrinth." The addition of Funke, often hailed as the J.K. Rowling of Germany, breathes new, chilling life into an already established tale full of dark fantasy.

Based on reader reviews, this was the best work by a celebrity-author duo. More than 45% of 20K+ Goodreads reviewers gave the book a whopping 5-star review. The most liked review began with, "I just want to flip back to the beginning and read it all over again! ...This was just as magical and creepy as I had hoped it would be!" And rest assured, many readers explained you don't have to have watched the film to be mesmerized by the book.

The President's Daughter by Bill Clinton and James Patterson

Fun fact: Bill Clinton's favorite genre is thriller. In a 2018 BBC interview, the former president said, "I read huge numbers of them." That's why he partnered up with his favorite author, James Patterson, to write "The President's Daughter," which was their second book together. Reader reviews indicated this book as another favorite amongst reviewers when it came to celeb-author collaborations.

On both Goodreads and Amazon, the 2021 political thriller novel boasts a higher than 4.0-star average rating with more than 80,000 reviews total. While readers found the book a bit lengthy a little over 600 pages, the short chapters kept the momentum churning, ensuring a fast-paced read. An Amazon reviewer gave the book five stars, writing, "This was a very good read from start to finish. Don't let the 135 chapters deter you, this book was a page turner! Some nights I had to make myself stop reading or risk staying up into the wee hours of the night."

Readers also noted that the deeper they got into the story, which is about a former president going rogue to save his daughter, the clearer it became that Clinton added so much first-hand experience, giving the book a rare "insider" quality. If you love James Patterson's enthralling storytelling and want to see how it blends with the experiences of a former commander-in-chief, this book needs to be added to your TBR.

State of Terror by Hilary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny

Right under Bill Clinton's book is his wife and former Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton's work of fiction, "State of Terror," which was co-written with bestselling mystery author, Louise Penny. During an interview with NPR's Weekend Edition, Clinton explained that she was motivated to write a book after Penny asked her one question: "...What are the problems that kept you up at night?" The two women knew they had to team up to tell the story of a novice secretary of state who must race against time to stop a conspiracy from within American walls.

Readers found the book to be full of thrilling twists and turns, and they appreciated how the story celebrates female friendship and professional solidarity. This shouldn't come as a surprise as most of Hillary Clinton's favorite books are explorations of womanhood. An Amazon reviewer gave the book five stars and described the book as "a wonderful surprise," stating, "The core of the book is about the value of women's friendships, but every page reflects on women being underestimated, sidelined, and trivialized because of their sex, yet triumphing despite the obstacles society forces them to endure."

Many thought the synergy between the two women was undeniable. A Goodreads reviewer couldn't get through the book fast enough, lauding "Clinton's experience as Secretary of State shines through. Couple that with Penny's ability to create characters that come through as real, fully fleshed out characters, and it's a winner."

S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst

Another award-winning director made a bold creative pivot into literature, and it was none other than J.J. Abrams. The filmmaker partnered with novelist Doug Dorst to release "S.," which is a puzzle hidden with the pages of a fictional story. The book is a full-on literary adventure that invites the readers to become detectives and decipher a secret narrative through things like handwritten notes and newspaper clippings. Neat, huh?

It's the perfect book for readers who enjoy solving puzzles and immersive experiences. In fact, many readers gave the book more stars than they felt the story deserved because of the unique experience they got from reading it. A Goodreads reviewer gave the book a 4.5-star rating, noting, "... while the actual story of this is probably 3.5-4 stars, the overall experience of reading and dissecting this is just so fun and totally unique to anything else I've read."

On Amazon reviews, more than 80% of 4K+ readers gave the book two thumbs up and a 5-star rating. Many readers praised both the story and the finished product as a "masterpiece" and how they were floored when they closed the book and ended up with a "work of art" in their hands after finally solving the puzzle.

Gone Before Goodbye by Reese WItherspoon and Harlan Coben

Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben joked their thriller would have readers cursing them out at 4 a.m., and "Gone Before Goodbye" did exactly that. The story follows a former combat surgeon who must find herself out of a terrifying and messy web of deception she's been caught in. If you're more of a listener than a reader, then you're absolutely in for a treat: the audiobook features a star-studded cast that includes Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.

Readers overwhelmingly acclaimed the book for its pacing and character development, but the book has proven surprisingly polarizing. A countless number of reviews felt the book deserved five stars, but the abrupt and unresolved ending left them unable to give the book a perfect rating. It's a classic case of the journey being so addictive that the destination ends up lacking terribly.

A 4-star Amazon reviewer said, "I dropped one star because I thought the ending was a little loosely tied up. It left me feeling like it ended a bit abruptly without resolving a few details." A 3-star reviewer felt no different, writing, "I was unable to put this book down...But the ending did not make sense to me, and that actually ruins a good book. Read it for yourself because it is a terrific story, but be prepared for confusion and loose ends not tied."

How we came up with this list

As the title of the article suggests, we relied solely on reader reviews to put this list of the best celebrity-author collaborated books together. Per usual, we turned to platforms and communities that have a well-established reputation for bringing readers together, such as Goodreads, Amazon reviews, and subreddits dedicated to books. We wanted to ensure our list didn't include a book simply because of a celeb's fame.

Beyond a famous name on the cover, we sought out stories that proved their worth through and through with an overall positive reader reception. Strong character development, immersive plotting, and just an unputdownable quality needed to be present for the book to make this list. When we were down to 10 books, we did a second round of reader-review vetting.

We proceeded to review the titles that remained on the list with a higher than ideal percentage of 3-star ratings to understand the divide in reader reception. From poor pacing to inconsistent character development, titles that were viewed as having fundamental flaws in the craft were eliminated. For instance, despite heavily polarizing reviews, Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben's "Gone Before Goodbye" was kept on this list because the lower ratings weren't driven by poor writing, but rather an underdeveloped ending.
