Summer is one of those magical seasons where everything feels golden, and the possibilities seem endless. One might wonder how to make their summer days feel even more complete, and for many, the answer is a good beach day. Wiggling your toes into sand, lying on a fresh beach towel, and hearing the ocean crash against the shore is the ultimate reset for summer. But that truly immersive experience isn't complete unless there's a good book in hand.

Many of our favorite beach reads to get into the summer mindset are romance picks, which is understandable because summer feels like the perfect time to fall in love (or read about it). However, if you're not feeling the love this summer or just want to branch out into something new, you may be surprised to know just how many readers prefer a thrilling beach read. There's a peculiar, blissful joy in reading a pulse-pounding mystery while basking in the sun.

That said, you may want to still want those quintessential summer vibes, even when opting for a darker narrative full of surprises. This is where atmospheric thrillers shine. With May 2026 just around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to introduce our readers to the perfect beach reads full of mystery and thrills, and we turned to the ultimate reading community, Goodreads, to compile this list.

The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand

Elin Hilderbrand's "The Hotel Nantucket" is the perfect beach read for those who crave the excitement of a mystery but prefer to avoid the intensity of traditional thrillers. This book is a cozy read set on Nantucket Island, weaving together a ghostly subplot and an exciting hunt for an anonymous critic. Also, if you're unfamiliar with Hilderbrand's works, dive into our guide on where to start with Elin Hilderbrand books for a summer full of beach reads.

More than 315K members of the Goodreads community have rated this book, and it maintains a four-star average rating, with over 75% of those reviewers giving the book four stars or higher. One Goodreads user gave the book four stars, describing the book as the 'consummate summer reading experience.' This is how the same user began their review: "Ah, is there a more satisfying feeling than finding the perfect beach read during the waning days of summer?" Their review truly says it all.

Another user gave the book five stars, noting, "For me, summer arrives after I've read the newest Elin Hilderbrand book, and this was one of my favorites to-date!...there is also a plethora of secrets, drama, mystery, and betrayal to keep things interesting." If you want a beach read with a sprinkle of mystery that keeps you guessing, then "The Hotel Nantucket" deserves a spot on your TBR this summer.

Murder in Tuscany by T.A. Williams

If the cover art of "Murder in Tuscany" by T.A. Williams doesn't make you want to read it, we're not sure what will. This is the first book of the Armstrong and Oscar Cozy Mystery series, set in the sun-kissed Italian region, Tuscany, or as the locals would say, Toscana. This book and the overall series are perfect for readers seeking the charm of a picturesque vacation and a good mystery to go with it.

The story follows a retired British detective named Armstrong, who trades his fast-paced former life for the Italian countryside with his best furry friend, Oscar. Just as the two are about to embrace their new peaceful life, Armstrong is forced to get back into action when a murder upends Tuscany. Goodreads users praised Williams for his ability to keep a murder mystery cozy and appreciated all of the beautiful scenic descriptions along the way.

One five-star reviewer said, "... the stand-out character for me was Tuscany itself; the descriptions of the towns and villages as well as the meals eaten were a great addition to an intriguing mystery." You won't believe how many reviewers used the word "delightful" to describe this murder mystery, but Williams has mastered the art of the cozy mystery by blending a whodunnit with a love letter to the Italian countryside.

The Castaways by Lucy Clarke

"The Castaways" by Lucy Clarke is another favorite beach read full of mysteries and thrills among Goodreads users. This pick is perfect for those who love destination thrillers, as Clarke is known for mixing travel and suspense and crafting the perfect story, this time taking readers to Fiji. Two sisters, who set out on a dream holiday, end up living two different fates. One ends up on a remote island after a plane crash, and the other is trying to uncover the truth behind her sister's disappearance.

A five-star Goodreads review with more than 90 likes wrote, "This book has more thrills, twists, turns and surprises than most adventure/mystery stories with a survival theme. It was well written and organized, and the storytelling was great ... the vivid descriptions transported me to that small island, a place I never want to visit." Many Goodreads reviewers felt the book reminded them of the hit TV series, "Lost," and thought the book was perfectly paced with flawed characters that made the story all the more intriguing.

Believe us when we say this book will seriously transport you to a breathtakingly beautiful island. Even when reviewers gave Clarke's work three stars, they noted, "... the Fiji island descriptions are wonderful and you can almost eat the coconuts and fruit bread and visualise the crystal blue waters and infinite cloudless skies ..."

The Block Party by Jamie Day

If you're looking for something with some serious suspense to it, "The Block Party" is a domestic thriller that takes place during a neighborhood's summer block party. While the book may not be one of the best domestic thriller books of the 2020s, Elin Hilderbrand shares, "[It's] like a firecracker on a hot summer night."

What could possibly go wrong when a wealthy neighborhood gets together to throw a summer block party? Perhaps the untangling of a messy web of secrets, and even a murder. This story may give you the strongest summer vibes, but it will also give you the shivers. The strained relationships behind closed doors become more and more apparent as the investigation cracks down, only proving that the closer you are to your neighbors, the more dangerous their secrets become.

Over 20,000 Goodreads users gave the book four stars or higher, with a five-star reviewer saying, "This is a scandalously delicious summer read! ... 'The Block Party' is a volcano of betrayal, obsession, and scandal that has been simmering just under the surface." However, it's worth mentioning that there were enough three-star reviews to deem the reception polarizing. Thankfully, most of those three-star reviews mentioned that they received such a rating because some of the characters were unlikable, and the pace felt a bit slow.

How we came up with this list

To introduce our readers to some promising summer beach reads full of mystery and thrills, we wanted to take a different approach to this list. Instead of opting for our usual, scouring all over the internet method, we let a trustworthy reading community lead the way to the perfect picks. We focused and relied solely on Goodreads and its hundreds of millions of users!

Obviously, above anything, only books with a summer setting and some kind of mystery element were considered. Once we had a shortlist of reads that met those requirements, we analyzed countless ratings. The book had to have earned four stars or higher from at least more than half of its reviews, whether it had a polarizing reader reception or not.

The reviews with a lot of three-star ratings or lower went through a secondary screening to ensure those ratings were primarily based on subjective character preferences or pacing concerns. Books that were deemed to have some sort of fundamental flaw in the mystery were eliminated. Whether you're in search of a cozy mystery in a sun-drenched, blue water setting or a cutthroat thriller unfolding in a posh neighborhood, we know you'll have at least one of these books added to your cart by the time you reach the end of our list.
