It seems the stars of the golfing world can be just as messy as the denizens of Hollywood, and this is highlighted by the marriage rumors plaguing professional Irish golfer Rory McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll. And it's really no secret that the pair's marriage has been going through it, with the golfing champion suddenly filing for divorce back in May 2024, though McIlroy scrapped it and reconciled with Stoll. However, it seemed that the couple is still navigating choppy waters, as seen in how the two interacted during the 2026 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club.
A brief clip posted by a spectator on X (formerly Twitter) showed the aftermath of McIlroy's second Masters win. All smiles and grins, the triumphant golfer walked towards his family, but what got the attention of fans is the fact that McIlroy had to urge Stoll and their daughter, Poppy, to embrace him and celebrate in the win. "Having to call your wife over for the photo op hug is just ... odd," said one X user. Another sharp-eyed X user commented, "Coldest family interactions ever. His parents clearly love him, but his wife ..." This interaction certainly doesn't bode well for the couple, especially with the rumors of an affair flying about.
Rory McIlroy just can't escape the cheating rumors
While these celebs have admitted to cheating on their partners, Rory McIlroy has kept mum about allegations of an affair with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis. But Alan Shipnuck, who published the biography "Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf's Most Human Superstar," noted in his book (per Daily Mail) that when it comes to the cause of the 2024 divorce debacle, the timeline all lines up. Shipnuck goes a step further and claimed that Erica Stoll's experience mirrors that of Elin Nordegren, who has totally transformed since divorcing Tiger Woods after his cheating scandals came to light. "It didn't help that Erica had become a neo-Elin Woods," Shipnuck wrote in his book, "never doing any interviews and remaining unknown to the golf public."
While this is all alleged at this point, the golfing legend has publicly admitted that he might not be the easiest person to be around. "First and foremost, my wife and daughter, Erica and Poppy. They have to put up with me at home, and trust me, sometimes that's a tough thing to do," McIlroy said in a speech after accepting his green jacket for his 2026 Masters win. Although he said it in a joking manner, the implications of his words might add an extra layer to the rumored strain in their marriage. But for the sake of their daughter, we hope the couple can persevere and come out on top.
