Melissa McCarthy's Stunning Hair Transformation Over The Years

A stunning weight loss transformation isn't the only transformation Melissa McCarthy experienced. Her beauty and hair has also had quite the transformation over the years. While media outlets are often focused on her weight loss journey, which makes sense because it's reported she's lost more than 90 pounds, the "Spy" star should also be just as recognized for her openness to experimenting with new makeup looks and hairstyles.

Over the years, McCarthy's hairstyles have ranged from a variety of styles to all kinds of colors and shades. Seriously, she's like a chameleon, and it started long before she was in showbiz. In a 2014 interview with Redbook, the Emmy award-winning actor gave fans a glimpse of what she was like in college. "I wore white kabuki makeup, had blue-black hair. At one point, I shaved an inch and a half around my hairline and continued the white makeup up so it made my head look slightly deformed." 

While the actor might not be as bold as her collegiate days, sporting black and blue hair, she loves to surprise fans with new bold hairstyles that match the vibes of her glamorous looks on red carpets and other high-profile events. With the "Tammy" star being spotlighted for her amazing weight loss transformation, it was only appropriate to highlight just how much her hair has had an evolution of its own. 

Melissa McCarthy joined the other cast members of "Gilmore Girls," the show that had everyone wondering whether or not Lorelai and Rory's relationship was healthy or not, to celebrate the 100th episode of the show in December 2004. The actor showed off a warm-toned, strawberry blond bob that skimmed the shoulders. The pinned back top section added height and volume that gave the look a retro flair. As early as it was in her career, McCarthy kept her hairstyle as simple as her makeup look for the event.

By the time the 2007 Sundance Film Festival came around, Melissa McCarthy had moved away from her strawberry blond hair and debuted a much deeper, chocolate brown shade. The color looked stunning on her as it complemented her complexion and brought out her eyes more. The length remained the same, but the styling felt even more relaxed and a bit more modern compared to the hairstyle she wore for the "Gilmore Girls" 100th episode celebration a few years prior.

Melissa McCarthy loves a good pouf, and it began back in 2010. She attended the CBS Fall Season Premiere Party rocking a pouf that took her red carpet style to a whole new level. It looks like she teased the hair at the roots to create that signature lift, and it added personality to the deep espresso brown locks. The look was bold and big, and it marked a shift toward the more dramatic silhouettes she is known for today.  From then on, she would often be seen with a pouf in varying sizes.

By 2014, Melissa McCarthy had become a big name in Hollywood after her breakout roles in "The Bridesmaids" and "Identity Thief."  For the June 2014 premiere of her movie, "Tammy," the actor stepped onto the red carpet with a completely different look from previous years. She opted for thick, choppy bangs that hit below her eyebrows and loose waves that fell past her shoulders. Perhaps the most noticeable difference was the color as she added honey blonde highlights to her chestnut brown hair, which gave her the perfect summery vibe. 

Melissa McCarthy had found one of her best styles to date in 2016 for the "Ghostbusters" premiere. She wore her hair in a middle part and it, along with the soft waves, perfectly framed her face and created a balanced, slimming look. This boho chic look completely aged her backwards and gave her a radiant energy that was hard to miss. For the 2021 InStyle Awards, the "Bridesmaids" star debuted a deep side part, which is a 2016 beauty trend that's worth bringing into 2026, and it brought a serious dose of Hollywood glamour to the event. Not only that, the sleek, sweeping bang that draped elegantly across her forehead and the multi-toned hair perfected the look and gave it a sophisticated and chic edge. Simply swapping out her usual beachy waves for a glossy straight finish made the look feel couture. 

Melissa McCarthy returned to the big screen as Ursula for the live action remake of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" in 2023, and for the premiere of the film, the actor traded the sea witch's spiky mohawk for lovely romantic loose curls. Styled with a clean center part to frame her face perfectly, the hair complemented an ensemble that was divinely couture. The whole look for the evening was a nod to her character's signature color palette in the most elegant way. 

On the red carpet of the 96th Academy Awards in March 2024, Melissa McCarthy's pouf returned. For this occasion, the pouf was bigger than ever and also a much sleeker, updated version of her original pouf. Instead of her hair being pinned straight back, it was swept dramatically with a deep side part that gave sophisticated old '70s Hollywood vibes. 2024 was the year McCarthy's love of poufs was back in full force as she wore an even more dramatic pouf to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party following the Academy Awards. 

Since her major weight loss transformation, Melissa McCarthy has stepped into a glowing era of confidence, and the new hairstyles she has been sporting show it. While she loved to wear her hair in ways that prioritized volume and being forgiving, she has been spicing things up. Most notably, for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, she wore her hair back in a high bun, which put her features front and center. A clean bun is the epitome of "It Girl" chic, and she wore it so well.
