Hollywood may strike awe in the average onlooker through its ritzy events and the ostentatious lifestyles of its stars, but the occasional scandalous affair peeks through to show how messy things are behind the scenes. Yet the last thing we'd expect is for silver screen veteran Meryl Streep to be linked to an alleged affair, and to "The Shining" star Jack Nicholson, no less. And the saucy rumors about the pair stemmed decades ago, when they were co-stars in the 1986 film "Heartburn." To add fuel to the fire, Streep was married at the time to then-husband Don Gummer (the couple separated in 2017).

While some celebs have admitted to cheating on their partners, the "Kramer vs. Kramer" star has kept mum about it all. In truth, it's still debated if the affair actually happened since there are conflicting accounts. According to "Heartburn" producer Bob Greenhut, per Town & Country, Nicholson had a "severe crush" on Streep, but Streep consistently rebuffed Nicholson's romantic advances. However, celebrity biographer Marc Eliot has revealed in his "Nicholson: A Biography" that something did happen between the pair, but it happened later during the filming of the 1987 film "Ironweed." Here, Streep and Nicholson worked together once more, and things allegedly turned amorous for the two in Nicholson's trailer. "Whatever is going on inside that Winnebago it's starting to get out of hand, to the point where it's embarrassing a lot of people on the set," a source exclusively shared with the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, per Vanity Fair.

Meryl Streep's current romance has allegedly hit a bump in the road

Unfortunately, things didn't pan out for Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer, and the pair is rumored to be in the midst of finalizing their divorce. Although the two have been separated for close to a decade, the "Devil Wears Prada" star wants to truly put things behind her as her two-year romance with fellow actor Martin Short heats up. In fact, sources close to the couple allege that they are prepared to walk down the aisle. However, it seems the divorce has been experiencing setbacks, one that has reportedly caused some strain in Streep and Short's relationship.

"Her divorce to Don Grummer is dragging on. It's giving her and Martin major stress heading into 2026," a source exclusively shared with the National Examiner. "He wants them to get married and live together — now." Sources further reveal that the divorce delay is due to Streep attempting to smooth out pre-existing family dynamics since they "share kids and grandkids," though it's not clear if Gummer shares the blame in this as well. Yet it seems Streep and Short are still going strong and cannot wait to say 'I do' before the altar. And while others could benefit from our tips for getting back into dating after a divorce, it's safe to say that Streep won't be needing them.
