Pics Of The Most Embarrassing Royal Fashion Faux Pas
Royal fashion is typically equated with elegance and class. Many of the royal women are often seen as fashion icons, especially Princess Diana, who didn't follow royal fashion rules. She was known for her iconic little black dress, pastel-colored suits, and biker shorts. Kate Middleton, whose pricey outfits highlight how lavish her life really is, is another royal fashion icon known for her beautiful gowns and peacoats. And of course, there's Meghan Markle, whose fashion choices range from classic suits to dresses and button-downs.
As stylish as they may be, even the royal women can have wardrobe malfunctions and embarrassing fashion moments. From see-through clothing to wrinkled dresses, the royal women have faced it all. It goes to show us that even though they are royalty, they're also human. It makes for some memorable moments and makes us feel a bit better when we have an embarrassing moment, too. Without further ado, let's dive into some of the most embarrassing royal fashion faux pas.
When Kate Middleton needed an iron
At Wimbledon in 2023, Kate Middleton wore a gorgeous green dress. The color of the dress really complemented her peachy skin tone, and the overall style of the dress was elegant, covering her shoulders and going past her knee. There is one major issue, though: the dress is super wrinkled! The creases are noticeable at her hips and just below them, too. Middleton should've known that, with all the sitting and standing, a wrinkle-resistant fabric would have been a better choice.
When Princess Beatrice wore a very sheer dress
Princess Beatrice has been known to make some questionable fashion choices. Nothing (except perhaps her outfit at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding, which we'll get to soon) beats this one, though. At the V&A summer party in 2017, Princess Beatrice appeared wearing a very sheer navy dress, which revealed a lot of skin for a royal. The dress featured lace and was lined in crepe. While she looked great in the dress, it was widely considered inappropriate for a royal to wear something so revealing.
When Meghan Markle's bra made a peek-a-boo
Meghan Markle and the other royal ladies are usually put together, donning tailored and modest outfits. But, even Markle, who has transformed since her marriage to Prince Harry, has her fashion faux pas moments. When attending Charlie Van Straubenzee's wedding in 2018, we saw a bit more than we should have. Markle wore a black pleated skirt with a button-down black top, and a black fascinator to match. The outfit would have been great, but there was one issue: her lace bra peeked through the top! That's way too risqué for a royal.
When Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie looked like Cinderella's stepsisters
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were the talk of the town when they attended Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011, but not in a good way. The sisters, who are the nieces of King Charles III, wore distracting fascinators to the wedding, and the internet went wild. Princess Beatrice's fascinator was beige, to match her outfit. It appeared like deer antlers, rather than a fascinator. Princess Eugenie's fascinator, on the other hand, resembled a bird's nest. Seriously, what were they thinking?
When Kate Middleton wore a blouse backwards
When Kate Middleton visited the Henry Fawcett Children's Centre in 2019, she wore a silk blouse. The color of the blouse was a gorgeous purple, and it even had a bow necktie. You may be wondering what seems to be the problem, since the color, fabric, and style of the blouse all seem fine. The answer to that is the blouse is on backwards! That's right, on the Net-A-Porter website, the description of the blouse reads (via Mirror UK): "...features fabric-covered buttons that run down the back." We're not sure if it was intentional or not, but it's a faux pas.
When Meghan Markle wore ripped jeans
Meghan Markle is known for serving some very chic looks. But at the Invictus Games in 2017, she made a major royal faux pas. What makes this one even worse is that it was Markle and Prince Harry's public debut as a couple. Markle wore ripped jeans and a white blouse to the event, which stirred up some controversy. Prince Harry later revealed in his memoir, "Spare" (via Page Six) that the palace had approved of the outfit, but after all of the negative press, he felt like something more could've been done by the royals.
When Princess Diana danced in an off-shoulder number
When Princess Diana was meeting the Reagans at the White House in 1985, she wore a stunning black velvet dress, now known as the "Travolta Dress," as there are widely circulated pictures of the princess dancing with actor John Travolta in the dress. Now, this dress would be perfectly acceptable on a member of the public. But this was the 80s, and Princess Diana was a member of the royal family. The dress was seen as very revealing, as it was off shoulder.
When Kate Middleton wore cork wedges
Kate Middleton attended the 2012 Olympic Games in London wearing a business casual outfit. She paired a navy blazer with matching pants and a striped top. But it was really her shoes that caught everyone's attention. The duchess wore navy, cork wedge shoes, which is a total no-no for a royal. The rule is an unspoken one, but it stems from the wide belief that Queen Elizabeth II was not fond of wedges, according to Vogue Australia. Middleton, however, has worn them on more than one occasion, including during a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand.
