Helen Mirren Was Told Her Career Hinged On A Nose Job & Her Response Is Why She's An Icon
Amid the glitz and glam of Hollywood, it's easy to forget that show business can be a ruthless place. And it's doubly so for women, as Dame Helen Mirren came to find out very early into her career. In the May 2025 "Drama Actress Roundtable" by The Hollywood Reporter, the "Excalibur" star — who was joined by the likes of Parker Posey and Kathy Bates — revealed she was told to get a nose job as a way to kickstart her acting career, but the actor refused. "Someone said 'You'll never get work if you don't have a nose job.' I said no. I didn't want to be a pretty actress anyway."
And we're glad she didn't give in to the pressure. It's clear that Mirren charged on ahead and let her acting chops do all the talking for her, with the actor netting four Emmy wins, three Golden Globes, and an Oscar to boot. Now more than six decades into her career, the "MobLand" actor continues to go against the grain when it comes to Hollywood's beauty standards, and is one of the celebs who doesn't play by society's beauty rules. "I don't like the word beauty. I've always preferred the word swagger," Mirren shares exclusively with People. "So my legacy would be: 'She had good swagger.'"
Helen Mirren has her own perspective on plastic surgery
Hollywood is always abuzz with the latest tweakments to stay looking youthful for as long as possible, but Mirren is one celebrity who is aging with confidence. She also has her own opinions on cosmetic procedures. The "Elizabeth I" star had an exclusive sit-down with Elle and shares that, while she has no problem with people undergoing plastic surgery, she especially cautions young people from getting it. "I think it would be a terrible mistake to get plastic surgery when you're in your twenties [because] your face changes," Mirren admits to the publication, which further highlights the risks to know about before getting plastic surgery.
Aside from noting the harmful influence of social media on young people's psyche, the veteran actor also blames bad bathroom lighting. As such, the "Woman in Gold" actor has another cost-effective method to help you regain a level of self-confidence. "Before contemplating anything, get really good lighting in your bathroom so that whenever you look in the mirror, you are lit beautifully and look great," she shares. While it's an unconventional approach, it definitely beats shelling out thousands of dollars on a nose job.
