The pregnancy was a surprise as there were more than a few moments in 2025 that had us sure the Vances were headed for divorce. It wasn't just the fact that Usha told Meghan McCain on "Citizen McCain with Meghan McCain" about all the sacrifices she's made for JD, or even how JD shared during a September 2025 episode of "The Charlie Kirk Show" that he's yelled at — and even been rude to — Usha, but rather the photo evidence showing two people who don't seem to be each other's biggest fans. 

While MAGA women with eyebrow raising marriages is certainly not uncommon, there's something deeply strange about the relationship of Usha and JD. As much as Usha has been able to put on a brave face, it's important to realize that she's only been a Republican since 2022, likely due to her husband's current political affiliation, and as the daughter of immigrants, the anti-immigration rhetoric coming out of the White House might not be 100% okay with her. But like any relationship, if you're not a fly on the wall inside someone's home, you never really know the whole truth about what people are or aren't feeling. That being said, there are some glaring red flags in Usha and JD's marriage and they have some awkward chemistry between them, which has been captured on camera many times.

Although we don't know the complete backstory as to why Usha and JD Vance have an empty seat between them at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, it's worth noting other photos have them side-by-side at one point. However, as this picture suggests, perhaps Usha got tired of JD and decided she needed her space. As the photographer captured, JD is drinking water, while Usha is holding a wine or champagne glass, and as the saying goes, "in vino veritas," so maybe she was done with JD's antics for the day and told him so.

While JD Vance is Catholic, Usha Vance is Hindu and has no interest in converting – something that JD continues to push for because, apparently, Usha hasn't compromised enough for him. Considering how often JD has publicly commented on wanting his wife to convert, one can only imagine how much more he's done it behind closed doors, so it makes sense that Usha would look aggravated during Good Friday Mass at the Vatican. Most people would probably want to distance themselves from their partner if that person thought their religious beliefs were more important. 

When you're constantly in the public eye and being photographed, it's not easy to always appear natural and relaxed. Because, as humans, we're simply not built to always feel that way in general. But when Usha and JD Vance leaned in for a kiss as they arrived at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in February, 2026, in Baku, Azerbaijan, he appeared to be thinking it was going to be an on-the-lip kiss, while Usha went for the cheek. Granted, this doesn't make our list of awkward celebrity PDA moments, but it was still a tad awkward and does show two people not on the same page.

While three people in this picture are sharing a smug smile that almost suggests they knew how the election would ultimately go down, on the end, Usha looks a bit left out. It's as if she's sort of going through the motions, as a dutiful wife does, clapping with the rest, but also feeling unsure about how this is her life now.

Not only was it ironic that Usha and JD Vance would attend the opening night of "Les Misérables" at The Kennedy Center in June 2025 — it's about social inequality, oppression, and rebellion, among other things, after all — but they look just as miserable as the characters. With a decent amount of space between them, JD has his usual smug expression across his face, while Usha, again, looks less than thrilled. It probably didn't help that Usha and JD were loudly booed at The Kennedy Center just three months before.

In November 2022, Usha and JD Vance were photographed in this embrace that again suggests these two might struggle with intimacy. While pictures of them together pale in comparison to the photos of Kelly and Mike Johnson that paint an awkward portrait of their marriage, considering this was a moment of celebration (it was when JD Vance was elected to the Senate), there appears to be an emotional strain between Usha and JD. Usha's closed eyes do not seem to be in response to happiness, and although her hand is on JD's chest, his right arm is at his side, as if he is hesitating over touching his wife.

Although in July 2024, at the Republican National Convention, it was not yet known that Donald Trump would win again, this picture says so much about Usha and JD Vance. It's human nature that if you don't know someone very well, you usually want to keep some distance between them and yourself.
